My father in law was a resident at Helia Healthcare of Carbondale for the last year of his life. The staff was excellent the entire time, treated him with dignity and respect and he liked his stay there. This was one of the few nursing homes I found where I truly felt like the staff cared about it's residents. The building is not overly impressive from the outside but I always found it very clean and tidy inside. The first nursing home I've ever walked into, in my entire life, that didn't smell like a nursing home. I would recommend Helia of Carbondale to any family.

My father was only in their rehab for two weeks before he had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital because of untreated infections. My father was not given the bloodtests that his doctor had ordered. When I asked, they said he had been coded wrong. They didn't want me to have a copy of his bloodwork when they did take it at my request. When I saw how bad it was, I asked if he needed to be in the hospital. They said no.. In who days I asked if his tests were better with the antibiotic. They said they hadn't given him any. I said he should be on a broad spectrum antibiotic surely. They said NO. We need to make sure what kind we need to give him. Then 30 minutes later they called my sister and said they thought it would be a good idea to put him on a broad spectrum antibiotic. He ended up in Herrin Emergency room with pneumonia, urinary tract infection, blood sepsis. He was unable to recover and passed away in my home, under hospice care. They say they have skilled nursing care, but failed him in every respect.. We thought if we went every day and watched over him he would be ok as he went through rehab, We asked to see his chart, and they wouldn't let us see it. They should not be able to claim they are a skilled nursing care provider..
