"It was very nice and almost brand new. They offered all kinds of activities and had a saltwater pool. One thing I liked about them was, they said that if you have family in the area, they could stay there while you were there."

"I toured Ivy Park at Otay Ranch. What happened was, I explained why I was looking for another facility. I was looking for something more affordable. So, the director I met with explained the financial situation with the home and that my friend would need to be assessed for his care and likely it would exceed the amount he was currently paying. I could see the facility, it's very new, and extremely nice, but not affordable. The upkeep, it's immaculate. It's extremely nice. It looked like a high-end hotel. The dining area looked very nice. I don't know what the food was like because I didn't see it, but the dining atmosphere was very nice. It's a spacious facility. The staff was very good and I appreciated that she explained the finances right away. She was very professional."

"I went on a physical tour of Westmont at San Miguel Ranch. The tour was nice. It seemed like they had updated everything. It was under new management, and it had a modern feel to it. They're the ones that had a vegan menu. It had a very open and accepting social community. They had celebrations for LGBTQ and a very inclusive layout. Their common areas were lovely, and it felt very much like a living room. People smiled and said hello. We watched people play games and they smiled at my kids. Everything there was much more like living in a high-rise community where, when you take the elevator, you can just get off and be wherever you need to be, so that's so nice. Very central locations for everything. So that one was an enjoyable experience. The staff was outstanding. They counseled us through some of the things that we were still learning as far as payments and social workers. They worked to educate us on the care of my mother and what kind of questions to ask. Even though we decided to go another route, they still were very informative. So that speaks highly of their knowledge of the market for the people who are actually in this predicament for the first time. They're very, very helpful. They had a meal house that was open all day. They had meal times but then they also had the ability to make you what you wanted if you called down, which was important because my mom's schedule wasn't always like normal meal time. They had a very safe courtyard that was all enclosed and very thoughtfully designed so that it wouldn't bring in anything that was an unpleasant view. They were open to visiting pets coming into the courtyard and they had a separate portion for people that maybe couldn't accommodate visitors or guests. They had different courtyards for different setups. "

"I'm moving into St. Paul's Manor, and I like the community. I like the size and I like the location, the fact that it's Bankers Hill, that's walking distance to downtown San Diego, walking distance to the harbor, walking distance to Hillcrest, and walking distance to survival park. It's just it's a great place. The staff is very kind. To give an example of how long they've been there, two ladies that work in the dining room that have served me so far. One has been there the least amount of time for any employee in the kitchen, and that is seven years, and the other lady has been there 48 years. The staff doesn't turn over, it is secure. It's a good community. They're remodeling, everything's going to be up to date and everything is included. There are great views from my apartment on the eighth floor. It's just a nice place and the prices are very reasonable for what you get."

"SMy mother is 95. She has lived at Monte Vista Village for 3 1/2 years. She moved to independent living there after coming to San Diego from Florida when she could no longer live on her own. Her lodging was a spacious one bedroom apartment, certainly larger than one bedroom apartments I’ve lived in. It was completely refurbished before she moved in with new kitchen, new bathroom and new carpeting. She thrived there, learning new activities like wii bowling and she always enjoyed the Wednesday afternoon happy hour which had a different musical program every week. About a year ago she had a medical crisis which required her to move to Monte Vista’s Assisted Living building. We were immediately helped by the Monte Vista nursing staff and they problem solved with us, providing a place for her in assisted living as soon as it was needed. Her new studio apartment in Heritage House, her assisted living building, has the same large bedroom, large closets and bathroom as her one bedroom...except now her door opens onto the communal living room where she now spends most of her days. Without exception we have found the Monte Vista staff to be kind, caring and conscientious. My communication with the Heritage House staff has been extremely helpful. They call me when they see a problem and they are immediately available when I’ve called them for assistance. "My mother lived in the facility for 3 years until she passed away a few days ago. This is a great place for caring for your loved ones. My mother never said even once that she wants to go home. She loved the caregivers, food and her daily interactions with other residents. I highly recommend this facility to everyone I know."

"My father-in-law was at Acorn Oaks Manor II. They were amazing. The process of moving in was very simple. The nursing care was around the clock because they had three different shifts. We had a good relationship with the nurses. They kept us updated if we weren't there. I can't say anything bad at all about them. My father-in-law was on a pureed diet. They cook meals for the patients. The building was very clean. They had a day room where they would watch television, make cookies, and interact with their patients. They can go outside. Activity-wise, some patients were mobile, and some weren't mobile. It's a very homey feeling. You're free to visit anytime. No appointments. But you have to sign in and let them know that you're there. It's 24 hours, and you can come and go when you please."

"Grossmont Gardens was over the top. If I could afford it, this would be it. It's extremely active. They had businesspeople. They had everybody in and out. It was very busy. When I went to their administrative building, there were workers in and out and service people in and out. If you fell down, you could stay there. If you were independent, you could stay there. It was all inclusive. Plus, it's close to a medical facility. It was really nice. They had everything. It was topnotch. It was run very professionally. If you went as a normal person, you would think you were going to a regular place. You certainly didn't have the feel this was a convalescent area. They had a library. They had numerous buildings. It had so many different dining halls for each level of residents. They had a pool, and they had a bus that would take people places. It looked more like an independent retirement center to me. They have the assisted living, and it's blended in very well. I liked it."

"We visited the Gold Canyon Care Home. The tour was fine, and the property looked nice, but it seemed to be for people with onset dementia, which my mom is not. She just needed physical help. It seems like the patients there were more towards dementia onset and that type of thing. I don't think it'd be fitting for somebody who's got a sharp mind to be around just a bunch of dementia patients. They were professional and courteous. From what we saw, the rooms looked nice. The dining area looked clean."

"I visited Right Choice Senior Living, and then I also spoke to the owner on the phone. The owner, for some reason, didn't know that I was going to be there, so he wasn't there. One of the caregivers assisted me. The tour was good. I liked it. Edgar was the caregiver, and he seemed to be very attentive to each resident. Each resident wasn't tied to a strict schedule. The residents could go outdoors if they wanted, but no gym or library that I was shown."

"I toured AvantGarde Senior Living of La Jolla. The staff told me that my friend wouldn't be able to have a private room, but the papers that the social worker had sent me said that he could have a private room. The staff was awesome. It's very clean, but it is an older place. They've got it fixed up real cute, but I didn't like the shared rooms. It was a good atmosphere. It seemed like all the patients who were there were very happy. The shared room has a curtain in between down the middle, just like a hospital room. It's in a beautiful location. It's right in the middle of La Jolla. It's near the water. You can take the bus, and it drops you off right near there. It's a beautiful neighborhood that they're in."

"A couple of friends of mine moved into Lantern Crest. It was great. The staff was very friendly and accommodating more to the residents to be engaged. The apartments were lovely, clean, and inviting. I thought it was a really wonderful spot. They had all kinds of activities like workouts, shopping trips, and movies. They had entertainers came in and special events. I guess they could improve on more walking trails for dogs. "
