"I toured Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall. Erica showed us where to go and what we were looking for. They were very accommodating. We took a tour of the facility. We saw that the individuals were very happy. They have a community room. You can watch football. They have a lot of room and they have a full calendar of activities. The rooms are spacious and clean. They have a little kitchenette in some rooms."

"The service at Indian River Residential Care Community is wonderful because this is a facility that all the people there are all in auxiliary grant, which mean that they are not a rich facility and I don't know if they have patients with private pay. There are a lot of things that they do not have. But for people like my son who cannot go even for one month on a private pay and can no longer live on his own, I thank God there is a facility like this. There is no choice menu, but that's alright. These people are happy that somebody is cooking for them. If they don't like what the dinner is, they can always have a sandwich. They don't have a lot of activities and that's very disappointing because I think old people need activities. But for activities, you need money. These are not well read people, so I think a library will be wasted. However, if a van can take them to a dollar store or Walmart once every other week, that will be wonderful. They will have something to look forward to, but they don't have that. There are some downfalls and yet for people who have nowhere else to go, thank God the place is there. I will rate the manager of that facility absolutely the highest mark plus double it. She is a wonder on this earth and all the people in that facilityand these are her words are her children. She is a wonderful human being. She is very good. She does what she has to do. She has taken a person out of there because he is a danger to others. She gives him a number of chances but it comes to a point that she can't keep him there any longer. Nothing is perfect and I am not saying that this place is perfect. Not all people are as nice or understanding or as kind as she. But ultimately she is in charge and she listen when you talk to her. She asks how we are doing and is everything is okay. She speaks with us and gives us a beautiful greeting when we come in. She runs the place beautifully. It is the love of her life and it shows. The people who are there are on auxiliary grant and these are the people who are not well-off at all. They haven't any abundance of anything in life and some of them like my son are mentally ill and other problems. So, they can't go out and earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year so they can go to a private pay. This is a special place for special people. If somebody doesn't have enough money and can get an auxiliary, there is not that many places around to choose from. "

"I chose The Gardens of Virginia Beach for my mom because it has a very active activity department. The residents are very friendly, and it just seems like a nice place. They have activities like an auction, the usual bingo, crafts, go shopping and to a restaurant. They also have a book club, gardening, do exercise, and have music appreciation activities."

"I toured The Waterford at Virginia Beach Assisted Living. I liked the community, and the director was hospitable. They were willing to put my mom in there because they had two room openings, but the distance was farther away. They were clean, and they had other Filipinos there who could speak the language, which would help my mom. The director gave me a nice tour, and it's a smaller facility. She was willing to work with me and even order a bed for the room that was for respite care because we were thinking that Mom would only be in there for six weeks. She told me to let her know by the next day, and then she could order and accommodate me because one of the rooms had furniture and if that was still available, she could hold it for me. She just made me aware of the availability because it could always change. But there was no pressure, and she was cordial."

"I can see a lot of interest and sincerity among the people in Churchland House. Everyone I saw there were caring and genuine for the individuals living there. They have entertainment, they have people coming in to socialize with them and they also have a lot of activities. But mostly it's the sincere caregiving. It seems like most of them have a calling to do that. It's expensive like every place is, but she's quite happy and that's number one priority. But it would be great if they could lower the price. "

"We went to The Villages of Rosemont. The tour was good and informative. What my dad didn't like about it was there were so many people milling about and around. He's blind, so he doesn't want to go eat at the cafeteria. They would have had to make special arrangements for him for someone to bring him his food, which isn't standard there. The facilities were all nice. Everything was clean, but it wasn't the place he wanted to be. They have one person who does the tour. She went around and showed where everything was and what type of room they had for respite because they were in a certain area. I think she said two or three rooms are all they have for respite. The rest are permanent. I know they had a library with games in it. They had a dining area and a TV room. The rooms have their own TV and stuff like that. The food was all prepared for everyone in the big kitchen area. The place was very large, so for him to travel somewhere with a walker and being blind, it's a little bit difficult."

"I visited Bickford of Chesapeake. They had the salon, the physical therapy, and the restaurant. They have all the things that you would think you'd need. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, very welcoming, very personable, and very good at her job, and we liked her very much. The issue was that it came down to making a decision, and she didn't have availability. The facility was very nice. I never went to anything that was nicer. It just had a nice warm feeling, a place where anybody would be happy to live, and it was well-kept."

"You’re reading this because you’re in the difficult position of trying to decide how to manage a loved one in decline. I found myself in that position about a year ago when my formerly independent mother was unable to manage her daily activities. To be honest, I didn’t know the difference between independent living vs. assisted living vs. memory care and was very overwhelmed with the complexity of the situation. I did research but this only made the situation appear more complicated. In the end, I consulted with an independent (free) service that provides direction to people in these situations. They provided me with guidance and an initial list of about 10 assisted living/memory care facilities to research and visit. I spent 3 months researching and visiting the various facilities and revisited some as many as 3 times. The factors that you have to deal with are cost, quality of care, condition of the facility and other items that never occurred to you. This is not a task to be taken lightly as relocating your family member from one facility to another is not necessarily a viable option as the ‘settling in’ process is often very stressful for someone who was formerly living independently. In the end, I found that management is one of the strongest features of a facility. In the case of Georgian Manor, management has a cascading effect from the top down. What that means is that everyone is well trained, professional and courteous and the facility is meticulously maintained. I found factors of this in other operations but did not feel comfortable with some of the shortcomings in the other facilities. Another feature that you should consider in your decision is whether the facility has a separate ‘memory care’ facility on premises should your family member need additional care. Dirk Van Vort"

"I toured Harmony at Oakbrooke, and I liked it. When you walk in, it is bright, airy, and pleasant. You don't feel like you're in an institution at all. They had a lot of activity going on. Some people who had been out were coming in, and their bus had taken some of their folks somewhere, and they came back. It was very appealing. Their living space was good and didn't strike me as claustrophobic. The staff was nice."

"I really love Harmony at Harbour View. The amenities, the accommodations, and the staff were first class. The only thing I didn't like was the pricing. They had a dining facility, a bar, a weight room, a library, and a barber shop. The apartment was like a home. It had everything you needed, including a complete kitchen, a walk-in closet, a large bedroom, and a large living room."

"The facility is a great place for both people who need little help and those that need a lot of help. The staff is very attentive to the residents needs, and are always available to help a resident find something if they've lost it, or if they just need direction to find the restroom or community rooms for an event. The executive director of the facility is a wonderful person who is in touch with not only her staff, but as many of the residents as possible, on a nearly weekly basis. If a complaint is given, she makes a point to find the reasoning behind the issue and fix it. The facility itself is really nice, with three floors of apartments, and elevators at every hallway, it's easy to navigate. The grounds of the facility are very well kept as well, with a group being brought in to take care of them on a weekly basis during the summer, and slightly less frequently during the rest of the year. "I love Bickford of Virginia Beach. That place just really impressed me. It was very nice and the people were great. The only downfall was that it was extremely expensive. "My friend moved into the Regent of Newport News. It has a bedroom, living area, and bathroom. I've seen the dining room where they have barbecues, and the outdoor areas where they brought a bar from Ireland over. They don't serve alcoholic drinks. They use that as a backdrop for their big TV room. My friend told me that the food has been excellent. He's had two meals there. He was in the hospital for four months and couldn't stand the hospital food, so the fact that he finds this food appealing is a lot. It's spotless. I was very impressed with its cleanliness. The staff are all so friendly. They seem to want to make the residents pleased with the service that they're getting. The executive director came to my friend's old apartment, and they physically moved the furniture to relieve me, because I live in Florida and I drove up to Newport News. I just had so much to do in such a short amount of time. The executive director drove the Regent van to the apartment, loaded up all of his friend's furniture, and took it back to the Region of Newport News. I thought that it was really special that he personally did that. And they don't have separate nursing fees."
