"My wife and I moved to the Colonnades ten months ago, after considering five other Charlottesville-area retirement facilities. The residents and staff quickly made us feel part of the community. The staff is very helpful and available, even with some tech support with the internet and cell phones. We especially appreciate the wide range of activities--there seems to be an activity for every interest--and the varied exercise and fitness opportunities. There is a UVA-staffed health center and a good physical/occupational therapy program. The food is generally good, and it's improving. Independent living residential options include cottages with garages and patios and apartments with patios or balconies. Pets are welcome."

"Rosewood Village at Greenbrier was nice. The set-up they have there is awesome especially if you do not need assisted living like you're able to go as you please, and that was the part that was our only concern for my aunt there. They had memory care there, and I would have gone there myself when I retired because their set-up was beautiful. They had a nice outdoor facility. They had several floor plans. We went more into the memory care rooms. We didn't go into the assisted living rooms, but we saw the floor plans. Down the hallway, they have what looks like a little main street type thing, so it was really cute the way they had it set up. They have outdoor spaces. They have a garden area. They have a nice little patio with a barbecue that they do outdoor events with as well. Their dining room for the assisted living part was a little bit more upscale, but that's for the assisted living, not for the memory care. They had a separate area because memory care people would take the tablecloths off. Their dining facility was extremely nice and probably a little more upscale. The upkeep was very good. It was a nice facility. They were cheaper actually. The staff was extremely nice. He was very knowledgeable. He was filling in to show us around because it was a little short notice, but he had been there for years and years. The financial part of it, he wasn't as knowledgeable because someone else handled that. He gave us information and all that. It was a good experience with him as well. "

"My tour at Commonwealth Senior Living at Charlottesville was excellent, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff members were very friendly, they were warm and welcoming, and everybody spoke to you when you passed by. It was a very friendly environment. They sent me a text today to invite me to dinner there tomorrow night so I can try the food. What I like the most about it is that it's open, there's a lot of natural light, and the rooms were all a good size and the place was really clean."

"My mother is a resident at Acadia and I could not be happier with the service provided. The experienced staff is attentive and courteous to to the residents, providing varied and creative recreational activities, assistance with bathing and hygiene tasks, and attention to each residents needs. It's like family here! The house is large and open, with space for my mom pursue her hobbies, or to just relax and and have an easy day. There is a pool on site for exercise and fun, a large porch with stunning mountain views, and a wildflower meadow in the spring. Acadia Care is something special, definitely would recommend!"

"I visited this assisted living unannounced. The staff were wonderful, very friendly and informative. The place is newly refurbished and is spotless. The staff introduced me to resident, who each said great things about their home. Robin the administrator has worked their for 20 years and has a very soothing soul. She clearly has a passion for resident care. We will be moving my mother in here soon. The most homely one we visited and it has all levels f care. "

"This is a very nice place. The building is kept odor free and very clean; unlike other homes that reek of urine this one doesnt have a smell. The staff their are very nice not only to visitors but to residents also. My friend referred to some of the staff memebers as her special friends. Its good to know that your family and friends are in good hands while living here. "

"Though our visits usually last only for a couple hours, we enjoy the treatment that the staff shows our grammy. They respect her and are always very patient, which are qualities that are very hard to come by in an industry such as this. In our home town there are many of other assisted living facilities, but due to their lack of ability to perform the standard tasks demanded of their job, and show the required amount of respect we were forced to look for a place out of the city limits. The distance is not so bad when you think of the peace of mind you get knowing she's somewhere that she'll be taken care of. There as a sense of love and compassion at Commonwealth Assisted Living that you won't find anywhere near the area we live in which is why we truly appreciate what we have found. "

"I chose Riverdale Assisted Living for my parents. I like that they have their own room, and that was very nice. They have nurses and doctors. It's also the cheapest place that I can find for them. The facility is very clean, and the staff are all nice. "

"Heritage Inn Charlottesville has been great. My parents got a very nice room. It is spacious, clean, very well-kept, and accessible. I saw the meals mom was served, and it looked really good. They play bingo. They take them out every now and then to a certain place or shopping mall. They have physical therapy and occupational therapy. They also have a few other things. Everything is well maintained. They do upgrades to the building all the time, and it's a very nice, very nice place."

"My mother resided in one part of Linden House Assisted Living and Memory Care at Branchlands before. We thought her care would be incredible there, which it was. She stayed there for about a month. It is excellent. It is terrific. It is very nice, so are the people that are there .The staff is outstanding. They deliver everything they promised, and we think the world of them for taking care of my mother. We like the newness, for one thing. Also the staff is always accessible and available whenever you needed help. They get things to you right away. The facility itself has a wonderful restaurant or dining room in it, and the food is very good. We could not find any faults with it at all. It is a complete restaurant. They serve three meals a day, seven days a week. My mother had a specialized menu because of her condition. They have different levels of dining depending on your condition. They got plenty of activities. They have a calendar, and there's something going on every day like music and games. They have all kinds of things. The price is more than it ought to be, but it may be the best deal in town. It is between $5,000-7,000 a month, compared to her previous facility which was $9,000. It is probably the best choice to put a person in assisted living in this city."

"Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge is a relaxed yet beautiful facility, tastefully decorated but with physical aids for aging adults. It has clear, sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west, and stunning sunsets to be viewed from it's upper level apartments. Its meeting rooms on the first floor are top notch with all the latest technology to make it easy for residents and visitors to put on excellent presentations. Some ground floor apartments have doors leading out to their own gardens, and staff is available to help those interested in exotic plants to plant and care for them as needed. There are definitely four seasons in Charlottesville, but most year they are mild. Spring and fall are especially beautiful. Westminster Canterbury is not too far away from the University of Virginia and its Miller Center, where top leaders and authors speak to topics that affect democracy, government and the world. Many of the residents are active in sports, and take advantage of lifelong learning programs offered through the university. "

"We liked The Blake at Charlottesville for my mother. It was open. I like the openness, high ceilings, and things like that, which gave a bigger feel to things that my mom, I think, would have liked. I like the people, they were nice and helpful, but just in general the appearance of the facility itself gave -- and almost felt resort-like. The staff was very accommodating, he made you feel very comfortable, his knowledge seemed to be good, and he pretty much answered all of our questions. He's very helpful and knowledgeable and just an easy person to talk to, so it was a very comfortable visit. The room we looked at if she was moving there tomorrow, it was more than one room, which I like. It gave us a situation where you could have a bedroom and a kitchenette area, and then a separate sitting area. It was not huge, obviously, but it was adequate and gave more of a home feel because you had a separation of your bed space and your living space."

"I liked English Meadows Crozet Campus. I liked the location and everything they had to offer. It was more inclusive than some of the other places that I visited. It's kind of one size fits all. There were no add-on charges for various levels of assisted living or any other area of charges. It's all-inclusive, which is good. I thought the facility was very nice. I am seriously considering the place but the only reason I haven't made it the place I want to go to is because all their apartments are studio apartments which are nice and spacious, but it's just that I've never lived in one before. So, I have to get used to that concept. Typically I would be more interested in a one-bedroom facility, which is what I saw in all the other places. English Meadows Crozet Campus only had studios although it's got various sizes and layouts."

"I had a meeting with one of the administrators at The Lodge at Old Trail. I told her that I don't need assisted living yet, but I will need it, and when I do, I want to see how that's handled. She was very forthcoming. It's a beautiful building, it's very well kept, and it's very well made. There are some special things there that a lot of places don't have. For example, if you have an automobile, you can park your car in a garage underneath the building so it's completely out of the weather, and things like that are special. I have not eaten there, but I've been told that the food is really good. I've talked to some people who live there and they seem very pleased. It's a beautiful building inside and out, and I got the impression that the caretakers are very pleasant, knowledgeable, and caring. I got the impression that they're very careful about how they treat people, and that the people in assisted living are treated extremely well. In fact, that's where I'm probably going to decide to go myself when the time comes. There are some other buildings nearby, but they're all very new and very beautiful. The Lodge at Old Trail is a very nice building (or set of buildings) itself. It's very close to a part of the town, and there are places like the ACAC fitness center where you can go and work out that are just a five-minute walk away. They really treated me like I was a member of the community right away; I was very impressed with the quality of care."

"After heart surgery one of our uncles spent a number of months at The Village at Gordon House. This is one of Virginia's assisted living facilities for seniors and for us it was one of our first encounters with one of these residential centers. We were delighted with the home-like atmosphere and the positive attitude of the staff. My uncle had expressed concern that he would not be allowed to do things for himself. However we all soon discovered that while he did receive around the clock assistance, he was also encouraged to be as independent as possible under the circumstances. This independence helped keep him on the road to recovery and we will be forever grateful for the help and assistance everyone provided. We got to witness a few of his speech therapy lessons and we were so happy to notice the concern and professionalism on behalf of the therapist. Our uncle was not a model of cheer during those first weeks but the therapist was patient and helpful and it was not long before our uncle's attitude was reverting back to normal. There was a personalized plan of care that was designed just for our uncle. We were told that these care plans are created for every resident, regardless of whether they are planning to stay for just a short period of time or remain as long-term members of this senior community. With a full schedule that included wonderful meals, caring and dedicated staff members and lots of interesting activities it was no surprise that our uncle's recovery time surpassed even the most optimistic predictions that the doctors had voiced. "My husband was at Waynesboro Manor for awhile. Their environment was very good, and his room was very nice. I was very pleased with all of their staff. My experience there was very good until the last day. I found him sitting in a room by himself very soiled and dehydrated. I think they need to check on their patients more often. "
