What to Consider About Assisted Living in Lake Havasu City

Assisted living facilities in Lake Havasu City and throughout Arizona are overseen by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Department of Licensing Services. The Department’s responsibilities include on-site surveys, monitoring facilities through licensing inspections, licensing, investigating complaints received regarding quality of care and ensuring safety and adherence to performance standards in operation and maintenance of the facility.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Lake Havasu City

  • Retirees in Lake Havasu City won’t pay state taxes on Social Security income, but they will on IRA and 401(k) distributions. However, the state only partially taxes some private and public pensions. Overall, it makes Arizona moderately tax-friendly for retirement. State sales taxes can also be high, but groceries and prescription drugs aren’t taxed. This exemption is especially good for seniors since both goods are considered major expenses.
  • Residents of Lake Havasu City are near Havasu Regional Medical Center and the Havasu Surgery Center, both of which provide patient-centered care. Havasu Regional is a general medical and surgical facility and was rated high performing treating COPD.

  • Violent crime rates in Lake Havasu City are less than half the national average. Property crime rates are also lower by almost 8%.
  • Lake Havasu City has a relatively pleasant climate in the winter. It doesn’t get any snow, and rain is minimal. During the coldest winter month, the average nighttime low is about 41 degrees, and there’s an average of two days annually when temperatures fall below freezing. On the flip side, all those sunny days mean it can get extremely hot. July is the hottest month, with an average high of 109, making Lake Havasu City one of the hottest places in the state. Four months out of the year have daily temperatures in the 100s.

WACOG is responsible for overseeing the AAA that covers the Lake Havasu City region. AAA assists adults aged 60 or older and any age adult with a disability. Programs are provided through direct and contracted services, such as benefits counseling and enrollment, senior community service employment program, care services and assistance, senior nutrition, senior transportation and the long-term care ombudsman. It also administers the Active Seniors program, which includes workshop and physical activity programs.
