Mansfield is located in Richland County, midway between Columbus and Cleveland. Often referred to as The Heart of Ohio, Mansfield offers a wide range of artistic, cultural and outdoor activities to keep its 7,921 seniors busy year-round.

The immersive experience at the BibleWalk wax museum is particularly enjoyable for spiritual residents, while exhibits at the Mansfield Art Center and Mansfield Memorial Museum appeal to seniors of all interests. Nature lovers from across the state flock to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary, and with the orthopedic surgeons at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital embracing innovative medical technology, the city’s healthcare professionals help ensure its seniors can enjoy everything the city has to offer.

Considering that the city’s cost of living is nearly 30% below the U.S. average, it’s not surprising that Mansfield’s older adults also save money on in-home care. On average, Mansfield seniors pay $4,004 a month for home care and home health care. With most seniors across the nation paying around $4,481 for home care and $4,576 for home health care, seniors in Mansfield are saving over $5,724 per year.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Mansfield area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Mansfield Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Mansfield:

Home Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 4236 East Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43213
Phone Number: (419) 774-0457

Federally funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the H.W.A.P. provides low-income seniors with free weatherization services to increase the energy efficiency of their homes. To be eligible for the program, seniors’ income must be within 200% of the federal poverty guidelines, and their homes can’t have any significant mold, stagnant water or roof leaks. Weatherization services include installing insulation in attics and floors, replacing inefficient water heaters and sealing air leaks and ductwork.

Minor Home Modification

Address: 2131 Park Avenue West, Ontario, OH 44906
Phone Number: (419) 524-4144

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging manages the Minor Home Modification program. Services come at no cost to seniors and may include a variety of improvements for safety and mobility, such as repairing furnaces and leaky roofs, building wheelchair ramps and installing accessibility features in bathrooms.

Home Delivered Meals

Address: 2131 Park Avenue West, Ontario, OH 44906
Phone Number: (419) 524-4144

Staff with the Home Delivered Meals program not only help Manfield’s seniors meet their nutritional requirements, but they also provide social interaction for the city’s older adults who often spend much of their time alone. Delivery drivers are specially trained to recognize and report unusual health problems. To be eligible for the program, seniors must be homebound and lack the ability to prepare their own meals.

Homemaker Services

Address: 2131 Park Avenue West, Ontario, OH 44906
Phone Number: (419) 524-4144

The Homemaker Services program is another helpful resource managed by the local AAA. Seniors can receive help with grocery shopping and preparing meals, cleaning kitchen appliances, washing clothes and emptying trash. The program’s workers also perform light housework such as dusting, sweeping and mopping.

Section 504 Home Repair

Address: 200 North High Street, Room 507, Columbus, OH 43215
Phone Number: (614) 255-2400

Through the Section 504 Home Repair program, seniors aged 62 and over can receive a grant for up to $7,500 to remove health and safety hazards from their homes. Priority is given to older adults who are unable to acquire or repay loans due to creditworthiness; however, the grant must be repaid if the home is sold within three years. Seniors who are able to repay part of the grant may also be offered a low-interest loan that can be used to make general home repairs and improvements.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
