We've chosen Bethany Home - Heartwood for my dad because they've been around for 125 years and they are a full senior living campus. And then if you're a member or a resident on campus, you have priority admission over people from outside. As he needs more care, he can just advance to whatever level of care is appropriate for him. He is currently on the CBRF assisted living side. The place is nice but it needs updating. I've tried their food and it's really good. They have activities going on all the time. They have individual entity activities. Recently, they did pumpkin decorating. And then they also do whole campus activities. Every Friday, they have a campus-wide bingo game. When the Olympics were on TV, they had different entities competing against each other in the Bethany Olympics. It's just cool.

My grandfather was placed at this facility a couple of months ago. I have visited him a couple of times. The first time I went to visit, I was able to walk right in without signing in or any security. Anyone could walk in and do something horrible to a resident there. As I was visiting my grandpa, he stated that he was never taken to do any activities. The staff had him sitting in his room in his recliner all day until bedtime. He was very bored and didn’t understand why he wasn’t able to interact with the other residents or join any of the facilities activities. The second time I went to visit him was last night. The staff moved him into a different room for long term care so I was unfamiliar where to find him. I walked in and this time I signed in. I wasn’t told to be the person at the desk, I had to ask her if I should. Again, there is no security at this place and they let anyone in. I asked the lady at the front desk where I could find my grandpa, I have her his full name. She pointed to a man doing a puzzle in the room across from the desk and said that he was right there. I walked to the other room and it was not him. I went back by her and gave me a room number. I went down the hallway she pointed to but I couldn’t find his name on any of the doors. I found 2 employees in the hallway and they told me it was xxx and the door was on the left. I went to that room, knocked and walked into a random man’s room and we were both shocked. I went back out and looked at the name on the door, completely wrong name on the door. I then go back up to the front desk and told her my grandpas room was not where she said it was and I was sent to the wrong room by some employees. She then looked at me confused. Another woman walked up to me and I told her my grandpas name and that it seems like no one knows who I’m talking about. I asked her if any employee actually works there and if they know any of the residents because no one seemed to give a crap about the residents there. They both looked at me without a brain cell in their head. Then one lady said, I think he’s in xxx room. She took off walking super fast in the opposite direction and I lost her. Thought this was extremely rude of her as I didn’t know where I was going and still looking for my grandpas room. I finally find another person and he was familiar with where my grandpas name and where his room was located. I can’t believe the front desk person couldn’t look up his name in the computer system to let me know which room he was in. If she didn’t know, that would have been the smart thing to do. Once I saw my grandpas room, he said he was still stuck in his room all day and no one took him to do any activities in the facility. What I have gathered from this experience with the staff is that the staff is not caring, is not dedicated to the residents and actually getting to know them so they feel cared for. The residents are just a paycheck to them and they couldn’t care less about their wellbeing. If my loved one is in a facility, I expect quality care and for them to at least know his name. Also, the staff does not keep the private bathrooms in my grandpas room clean. The toilet was absolutely disgusting to the point I had to try not to vomit. They obviously do not care about their wellbeing cleanliness of the residents bathrooms because the disgusting mess in the toilet was old and dried to the toilet. I am contacting the state health department due to this. Also, I am not the one who chose this awful place for my grandpa, that was my mom and uncles. I am going to be demanding that he is moved to a proper facility. Don’t let your loved ones stay here, no matter what!

My mother was at Bethany Home. That's where she lost 8 pounds. We had to get her out of there. The food that all of us family members saw at different times was not good. We went there because it was quite a bit closer for us to visit her, but the therapy failed. Also with her sudden weight loss, we had to try something different. We couldn't be fine with this. They seemed to be understaffed. I don't think they weren't keeping up. However, the appearance was very nice. My parents are retired dairy farmers, and they always have milk at meals. But at Bethany Home, it was a difficult thing to get them to do that. And here, it's the evening meal, and they give my mom a can of cola. It's like, why are you giving these people caffeine this time of day?

My husband is living at Bethany Home in Waupaca. He was in the rehab unit in January, and then he moved into what they call a "residential-based facility" in February. Now we're planning to move into an assisted living apartment so that we can live together. I think it's a good place. We looked at another assisted living nursing complex, and the advantage of this one is it's a little bit less expensive than the other one. It also includes a gymnasium and a weight room as part of your membership there, which is an incentive to do a little more walking and get a little exercise. The staff is very attentive, and I think they're doing a good job. The location is centrally located on the outskirts of town. They have condos that people can rent out, and when they need more care, they have priority to move on to assisted living or skilled nursing. My husband is getting what they call a "one assist." He's supposed to have a person when he transfers -- like when he takes a shower -- but he's not in the nursing home part of the facility. He doesn't require skilled nursing, but he does require some help with daily activities. Their food is good, but with the activities, I really don't know. I think the value is good.

My husband is currently living in Bethany Home. It is by lake, so you see a lot of geese and things like that. However, there are no nice outside grounds that you can walk around on. Their rehab facility is exceptional. It is a brand new unit up on the third floor. While they supply furniture when you first move in, after that, you're supposed to get your own furniture. They do not have their own phone, but the rooms are very nice. The private rooms are very large and most of them have an outside view. The bathrooms are very big. The food department is horrible. They don't have individualized diets. So I wouldn't recommend that. Their activity program is very poor. Pretty much they have Bingo, and a few crafts, but not very many. They don't have anything for people that are blind or that are visually impaired. There's nobody reading to them. There is no interaction for any people that just sit there and can't help themselves. Bethany Home will only take them to in-town appointments; however, a person has to pay for their own long-term transportation. The nursing staff, for the most part, is very caring. They seemed to care about the residents. However, they're very short on CNAs, which is causing problem on the p.m. shift for the residents.

Bethany is fair at best. The care is very inconsistent. I wouldn't recommend the food to anyone. Seems like the employees who work there aren't happy

Uncle Art received great care during the last years of his life from the staff at Bethany. He was a very active senior until he suffered a stroke at the age of 90. At Bethany he was treated with utmost respect and was able to maintain daily contact with family and friends. It was also very important to him to be able to come to a Christian environment that allowed him to stay active in practicing his faith. I cannot thank everyone at Bethany enough!
