Starr Retirement Home was closer to a nursing home than assisted living. Most of the people there are in the noncommunicative stage or late stage Alzheimer’s. My mother needs help with all her daily activities. She can’t take care of herself at all and needs more hands-on care. Some days she knows who I am and some days she doesn’t. It’s a very homey little place -- just the right size. In the beginning, I thought it might be too small for her, but it really isn’t. They have 24-hour caregivers there who assist her with showering, dressing, feeding, and toilet activities. The caregivers are really sweet with the residents. They are all like family. They feed the residents well with three good meals a day and healthy snacks. Once in a while, they have a little singing group come in, or one of the caregivers’ sons would come in to sing and play his guitar. They really enjoy that.
