Macon, dubbed The Heart of Georgia, is part of Macon-Bibb County, a consolidated city-county. It has a population of 153,159, and 15.2% of its residents are aged 65 and older. Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center and Piedmont Macon Medical Center serve the area’s seniors and their families with award-winning care and a broad range of specialties. Macon’s nursing home prices are relatively low according to Genworth Financial’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey estimates. A semiprivate room here carries an average monthly cost of $6,783 compared to the national monthly median of $7,756.
When ailing individuals can no longer receive the level of care that they need at home, they often enter nursing homes. These facilities provide skilled nursing and aides who offer round-the-clock supervision and personal assistance. Residents also receive meals, social programming and medical care from doctors and on-call specialists. Consequently, nursing homes tend to be the most expensive senior living option. Individuals who don’t need such extensive support might find a more affordable and appropriate arrangement with home health care or assisted living.
This guide outlines nursing home costs in Macon and throughout Georgia. It also compares these prices to other care types. A list of local resources for the area’s seniors is included as well.

The food is very good. They have a nice, spacious dining area. It is nothing fancy, but it’s nice and clean.

My mother was a resident of Bolingreen Health & Rehabilitation. She loved it because they offered activities and everyone treated her really nice. The main thing is they were understaffed. The food was wonderful sometimes, but if they changed companies that provided the food, sometimes it wouldn’t be very good. The last couple of years she was there she said it was delicious.
She was in a semi-private, and then at the end they had four or five people in a room because of COVID. When she was in the semi-private and it was nice. She was with another lady, but that lady had some problems, and so she was out in the facility. So, my mother was there a lot by herself, but she enjoyed that. She watched TV and had friends over.
She had three meals a day and, and it was 24-hour care. There were times that they would take a busload and go to the games or take them out to eat. They would have outdoor activities, like they would have a tailgate party, and they would grill. There were different things that they did that my mother really enjoyed.
They were understaffed, and my mom’s needs were not met. It would be hours before she would get what she needed. There were times that I bought my mother things and they would disappear. They had a lot of turnovers.

My dad is in Atrium Health Navicent Rehabilitation Hospital for rehab. We chose it because other veterans and friends recommended it as being the best place for him. Physical therapy and occupational therapy have been consistent.
I don’t like that children can’t visit these seniors in the courtyard outside. I don’t think it’s nice for these grandparents, especially someone with dementia, to look at their grandchild through a glass window. It was appalling and it had upset him. Outside of physical therapy and occupational therapy, he’s sitting in his room alone. I went in there one day and he was sitting in a wheelchair in the hallway so they could keep an eye on him. That’s not OK with me. One time, my dad managed to get past the receptionist and the security guard on his wheelchair, and he went rolling right on out to the parking lot till they caught him.
They have vending machines and other things, which are convenient. They have several courtyards, which is nice. They have several gyms and they have several different methods of working with the residents. The physical therapists were outstanding. The whole place was very, very clean.

Then I came back because somebody called me and said, “You need to come out here. Your husband had fell out of bed.” He even fell down twice. I told them that they had to put rails on the bed, if he does fall out of bed. He goes in a long way off by himself — no rails on the bed, and nobody there to check on him, so I took him out that morning. The room was fine. They just didn’t have any rails on the bed, and they didn’t have him close enough where they could watch or monitor him. The staff seemed OK. When you talk to them, they are nice, but they are all ready to deny everything when something happens.

Nobody said, “Hello, can I help you or anything?” I talked to somebody there that I knew, and then left. And when I told the nurse at the hospital what happened, then they called me and wanted to know, but they were not helpful at all. I would not send anybody there. I would not tell anybody to go there or take their loved one there, because I don’t think that they would get good care. I didn’t get to see anything. Nobody helped me to see anything; all I did was walked down the hallway.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Macon, GA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Macon, GA
The resources below are designed to support Macon’s seniors and their families at home or in long-term care facilities. Some programs enable elders to age at home longer, and others assist those who require nursing home care.
The Middle Georgia Area Agency on Aging serves as a “one-call connection” to services that promote independence and dignity among seniors. Intake specialists conduct assessments to determine eligibility for programs offered throughout the Middle Georgia service area. Clients may qualify to participate in the Elderly and Disabled Waiver Program (EDWP) or Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). This agency also arranges consultations to help people manage their care and understand their options. Seniors and caregivers can also access assistive technology devices and incontinence supplies.
The GLSP provides free civil legal aid for low-income Georgians. Attorneys and advocates can represent long-term care facility residents to obtain and maintain eligibility for Medicaid and prevent unlawful discharge. Its Public Benefits Hotline helps citizens enroll in Medicaid, food stamps and other government programs. GLSP partners with the GeorgiaCares Hotline to offer free SHIP counseling regarding Medicare and other forms of health insurance.
Rebuilding Macon helps rehabilitate and repair the homes of low-income seniors so they can continue living safely and independently in the community. Volunteer teams apply paint, fix leaks, replace roofs and build wheelchair ramps. The organization also provides energy-saving modifications and other practical solutions to enhance residents' quality of life.
The Ombudsman Program investigates grievances for long-term care facility residents and mediates on their behalf to achieve resolutions. Ombudsmen also educate consumers, caregivers and facility staff on resident care and rights, relocation and alternative long-term care topics. They routinely visit long-term care facilities to observe conditions and interact with residents. This program also helps seniors and family members set up resident and family councils in their facilities.
