"Pine Ridge Family Type Home for Adults was clean. It was very small. I think the owner has six people in it. It's essentially a house and I have inquired about memory care. The owner spent a lot of time with us. She seems to be really concerned and actively engaged with everybody there. Then I spoke to two of the other residents and they seemed well cared for and happy. That was the place we were ready to send my mother to as we wanted a smaller personal place like that. There are no social activities going on and that was one of the things that I had issues with. At some point, the owner said that they were bringing people in, such as musicians, but the residents weren't even paying attention to them."

"My former husband is a resident of Maplewood at Stony Hill. The place is lovely. The people are great. A couple of times he tried to get out of bed himself, and he ended up on the floor, but they call me every time he does, and he's not getting hurt. The staff is very nice and very kind. They're all good. The food is nicely prepared. In the summer when it's nice weather, he goes outside. They have a lovely patio, but they also have grounds. It's just really a nice place. I have no complaints about the place other than the fact that he was having to pay extra, and they don't take Medicare. These people do a nice job on the food. Unfortunately, my former husband is on pureed food, but that's okay. It's kind of cute because what they do is they make it look kind of like what it's supposed to be, in the right shape and stuff like that. This place has been top-notch. This place is lovely. They're just trying to keep them occupied and try different things. They have an arts and crafts room, and another room to play games and stuff."

"I liked the Maplewood at Newtown. It had several floors and they designed it nicely. The rooms, the hall, and the carpet on all the floors are the same. As people decline, they put them on the lowest floor, and they have no idea that they changed rooms or areas. That was very impressive. The staff was very nice. They talked to us and showed us the brochures. They showed us the rooms and explained everything. I had a good impression. They showed us the studios, but I was interested in a one-bedroom. They had a beautiful library, a TV room, and a sitting room. Name it and they have it. In case you want anything special, you just tell them, and they do whatever they can for you."

"Drum Hill Senior Living Community is our first choice, and we will be going there, but we have a lot of things to figure out beforehand. We found that everybody (residents and staff) was incredibly friendly. We liked the setup. It felt more like a home as opposed to a facility. It gave a very homey impression. There are lots of little nooks and crannies where you can read a book or sit and crochet. When we did the tour, it was lunchtime, so I walked up to a table full of women and I said, 'Tell me the truth, how's the food?' And they said it was fabulous. We got more of a home-type feeling than the other places we had seen. The apartment was very lovely. It had a little kitchenette with a four-burner stove, a refrigerator, and a sink. There was some counter space and cabinets, and then there was the living room, which was small but perfectly adequate. The bedroom seemed to be a decent size. The bathroom was a decent size, too. Everything just seemed right. My husband feels it's a very friendly place. It's very open and very welcoming. He likes the fact that they were actual rooms."

"The Springvale Inn was gorgeous but it's way too big. I stood at one end of the hallway and I said, 'my mom can't do it.' They said that they have to get themselves to the dining area on their own power, but my mom needs more assistance than that one does. The Springvale Inn was very clean and organized and the rooms were spacious. That part was nice. The only part I didn't like is that the halls were extremely long. It was beautiful, but it was too big for my mom. I only met two people and they're extremely nice and really helpful. I only saw one room and it was being redone. It's gorgeous. They had a salon and a beautiful courtyard. They had a bingo hall, a big dining area, and a smaller dining area where you could hold family things. It was very clean. "

"Holiday Manor at Woodside is a huge facility. Everyone was very friendly. Many things were going on and staff were covering everything, watching everything, but they would help you if you needed it. They walk around freely, and they can communicate with each other. They have friends, and they go to quite a few activities that are provided for them, whatever they wish. The location is very good because it is located right next door to a cardiac specialization hospital. If there's an urgent need in that regard, help is right there. The facility is clean. The people were friendly as I was walking through the tour. The individuals were waving, smiling, and greeting us. There were groups having meals. There were groups watching television and/or programs in a community room. There are large rooms for many different types of activities. Three meals a day are provided. They had a menu posted. There was a poster of people's birthdays for the month. It was just adorable, and people seemed very happy there. The food smelled great. The facility was clean. There was a chapel in there for whichever denomination people believed. It is a very good facility."

"The hospital has put my mom into The Pines at Poughkeepsie Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. They've had to move her a few different times, but she's on a floor now where she has 24-hour monitoring. Her mind is pretty not there, but she's still able to get up and move around a little bit, so they have to really watch her, and they have to take care of her a lot. It's a rehab/nursing home, and it has four floors. One floor is for rehabilitation, and then another floor is for like people that need help, but they can do stuff themselves. It goes different levels like as your mind goes. It's nice for being in the city. It's set in like a wooded setting, so it's nice. It's not a city setting, even though it's in the city of Poughkeepsie. The staff have really been great. Everybody has been friendly and quite helpful. My mom had gone there for rehab, and when I brought her home, she needed a shot, and this medicine costs $1,500. Now, we could not afford it, so I called The Pines and the head nurse, and they had given me all of her medications that they had left because it was all done in her name, so everything that they had they gave to me (except for that shot). Well, a day later, the nurse called upstairs to the floor my mom was on and asked if they had sent it back down to the pharmacy yet, and they had not, and it was still up in the refrigerator with my mom's name on it. This nurse went and got that medication and drove it 45 minutes one way to my mom's house and gave her that injection she needed. That was like above and beyond. She's the head of the nurses in that building. I haven't eaten there, but I've seen what my mother has gotten, and they definitely give very nice meals there. When they ask for snacks, like my mom wanted something sweet, she wanted a cookie, the nurse went and got her two individually wrapped cookies and brought them to her. As for activities, they were doing a barbecue for the people that could do it. One day last week when I was there, they had all these little old people in their wheelchairs outside having a barbecue. My mom is at a level where she really can't do any activities, but they do have some very nice activities. Once a month, they have this thing in the foyer when you go in and some of these people set up a stand and they have this big popcorn machine with popcorn, and they bag it like all these little individual snacks, and all the money that they earn from that goes for the patients' activity. That's really nice. They do a lot for them. The rooms are a little small, and there are two beds to a room. You just get a dresser and a little stand-up closet, and then you have to share a bathroom with no shower. The showers are out in the hallway. But the facility is nice, and they do a lot of activities with the residents that can do activities. My brother takes care of all the financials, but I know it is very expensive."

"My mother has lived there for a year, and we are very happy that the staff's attention to her care has continued to be excellent. The executive staff is also as attentive and most importantly they are accessible if we need anything!"

"Pomperaug Woods was very nice and very friendly, but they were a little bit expensive. It was independent living, but they also have assisted living. The staff was very good. They have artists, composers, and very highly intelligent people living there. They have a varied program of things. A resident moved their own grand piano in there and would practice the piano during the day. It was all interactive. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. They went out of their way to explain all about the people that were living there, the artwork hanging on the wall, and what artists did it. The facility was very nice. It's all one level. They have an outdoor court, and when it's nice weather, they hold all the concerts out there. They had the Blue River Jazz Band there. It's top-notch entertainment."

"I love the Spring Meadows by Monarch. It was clean and bright. The decor was amazing. They had that soothing blue. And the residents that we passed by were really pleasant. They were all so very happy. The room itself was just amazing. It was a perfect fit for what I was looking for. The sales manager was extremely nice and very informative in terms of the community, especially the activities that are offered. It was nice. The receptionist was amazing, and the nurses that walked by were very well-mannered and very pleasant."

"My parents are residents of Waterstone at High Ridge. It is extremely well-maintained and extremely clean. There are good activities. The staff is very caring. It has a great sense of a social community, which a lot of them don't. So, there are always people out in the facility, visible, and they talk. It's a social place. It's independent, so the staff is doing tasks, but they're not assisting them with any activities of daily living other than providing food. The staff is all fantastic. They're friendly, courteous, and wonderful. Their food is good. It's gone up and down over the years. Sometimes it's good and sometimes okay, but compared to other places I've seen, it's very good. They have music multiple times a week. Once a month, they have an art show and a little art gallery. They have multiple social events in the pub. They have multiple daily activities every week, every day. My mother complains that it's too much of a game plan, but they do have a variety of activities. Vinnie, the activities director, is amazing. He is the sweetest, nicest, most wonderful person. He is just a darling, and he's very dedicated. They give us good value."

"The person I visited at The Knolls really likes the place. It has a very big Olympic-sized swimming pool, and she is a swimmer, so she really loves that. She can drive her car and everything, so she is kind of on her own, and she likes that of course. She has a two-bedroom that has a really nice kitchen, and she can cook her own food if she wants. She has a washer and dryer in the bathroom, and there's one room that is set up like an office with a desk, and she can use that. I saw the dining room, but no one was eating in it. I didn't meet any staff, but my friend showed us the place herself. The facility is not brand new, but it's not really old either, so it's nice."

"I saw a friend from church at Maplewood at Strawberry Hill and he liked the food there (he was a guy who liked to eat). It was a very nice place. The environment was very beautifully appointed with all the colors and large windows. My friend's apartment was very small. It was a studio size. He said he didn't need to have more than one room because he'd just go in there to sleep. He had a chair in the room, but it was very tight. He had a twin bed. The bathroom was built to accommodate people who had problems walking or standing in the shower. It was kept clean. It was a very wonderful environment. I didn't interact with the staff, but my friend said he liked them. They have a big room where everybody watches television with all the wheelchairs, and people are sitting around. The TV was huge. There was no other activity."

"My father has been a resident at Maplewood of Darien for 5 months. We have been very pleased with his care. His room, which is a studio, is very generously sized , the handicapped bathroom is large and the kitchenette is perfect for him. The staff is very attentive. When I am there even for the shortest visit, invariably a staff member will knock on his door to check on him. They have a broad range of activities. My father's favorites involve the outings such as scenic drives, concerts, plays and luncheons. He enjoys having lunch with a good friend he has made at the facility. Maplewood also allows me to coordinate his care with the V.A. where he receives his medications. The managing and administrative staff is very responsive and are always working to develop programs that the residents enjoy. I would highly recommend this facility."
