While Alzheimer’s ranks as a leading cause of death in Florida, communities such as Deerfield Beach see a relatively small impact from this disease. Despite the city’s large senior community, which accounts for nearly a quarter of its residents, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a 5% drop in Alzheimer’s-related deaths in the region between 2016 and 2020. At the beginning of this reporting period, Alzheimer’s caused about 4% of deaths in the region, compared to just over 3% at the end. Additionally, while the number of Alzheimer’s-related deaths declined during this timeframe, the total number of deaths rose by 19%.
