My mother moved to the assisted living facility of John Bertram House in Salem. We chose it because the location is directly in the city of Salem. It's a beautiful old building and also the smallest, so it felt like a more intimate community that would be a good fit for her. It probably only has 25 residents, and probably about a third of the size of some of the other places we looked at. Her apartment is spacious and very sunny, with a beautiful, large room. The facility is very clean and in great shape. We've eaten there a number of times with my mother, and I think the food is very good. It also feels very homemade. The staff is just extremely welcoming and friendly. I've gotten to know quite a few of them, and just about everyone at this point, at least I know them by sight. I think the place is exactly what she needed.

We saw John Bertram House. The only reason we didn't choose it was because it was 2-1/2 hours on a good day from where I live, otherwise that was where Mom was interested in going. It's a beautiful old federal house that was built in the late 1800s. The person who assisted me was wonderful. The dining area looked beautiful too. It was all linen tablecloths and napkins and the food looked great. We saw some meals being prepared and it was all fresh fruit and salads, things like that. They take the residents to Salem State to participate in something called Explorers, which my Mom did when she lived in Salem. There are classes that Salem State offers for senior citizens, so they take the residents to those if they're interested. There are activities going on in the building, but one of the things my Mom was interested in being able to continue are the classes at Salem State. They also do trips to Boston.
