"The Talbot on Granby was very nice with a friendly atmosphere. One drawback was that it seemed like the rooms were a long way away from the elevator. The rooms looked fine, and they all had balconies. Susan was a very nice host and a very nice person. The other drawback was that it was a little bit dark with dark panels and dark wood. My house was very open and airy. However, I would not say I would not go there. "

"I toured Willow Creek Gracious Retirement Living. It didn't feel as friendly when I walked in as some others. The apartments were okay. They had a couple of different sizes. The staff was very good."

"My mother-in-law has moved into Lighthouse Pointe by Barclay House. She's in independent care, but they have a company there that we can pay, have a contract per month, and they check on her every couple of hours and make sure they order her food. She can't get to the dining room on her own. She is in independent care, but she broke her arm and needs help. She doesn't sleep in a bed. She can't lie down flat, so she sleeps in an electric recliner, and it's set up like a cute little living room kind of thing. It's the same size as my den. It's got a nice-sized bathroom, and it's roomy enough for her to get in and move around in with a walker. The living room is big enough to move around with a walker. It has a balcony on it. It's open air. It's got lots of windows. The kitchenette has just a little sink, a microwave, a little coffee pot, and that's about it. It's got three closets in it, which I love. She's got one of the smaller units. There are two or three different sizes there, and they are all very nice. Before you move in, they remodel them and paint them, and she had new carpet, new flooring, and new amenities in the bathroom. They did a nice job. For her, it's really nice. The food is excellent. We've eaten a lot of meals with her. They bring the food to her; that's part of the extra money we pay through that other company, but they forget silverware occasionally. They forget little stuff, but for the most part, the food is good, and we haven't had a bad meal yet. Everybody is extremely friendly and helpful. We needed an extra handrail in the bathroom, and they came in and sized it up to how she gets off the toilet, and they came in and maintenance put it up for us the next day. I am extremely pleased with everything about it. Parking is a little tough some days. You have to park out a little further, but for the most part, it's great. I highly recommend it. They have puzzle stations all over the place. They play cards and different things. They have activities that come through. It's very clean."

"I chose the Chamberlin because it's beautiful, on the water, and in a historic building. It suited me because the apartments are huge, they gave us one free meal, have all the utilities included, and they clean the place twice a month. They have a huge indoor pool for year-round use, they've got a huge exercise program, concierge services that take you places, and an active senior community there."

"We toured Harmony at Harbour View. It was nice. It was relatively close to where I live, so it would have been easy to visit. The facility was very nice and clean, and the people were great. They have a small library. The rooms, compared to the others, are about the same size. It's certainly enough for one person to live in. The food was good. The staff, as much as we interfaced with them, were very nice and pleasant."

"I toured Harper's Station Yorktown. The people, the community itself, are very welcoming. I got a chance to eat there. They had a lot of choices, and the food was very good. The washer/dryer was good, a closet with doors. That's the only thing I was hesitant about, but good size. This facility is practically new. They have a pool and exercise equipment, and everything you need."

"I chose to stay at Silver Hill Apartments at Town Center because of the atmosphere and the people. I liked the two girls who made you feel totally welcome. The staff were good and if I needed help, they gave it to me. I had a small apartment but it was all I needed. It had one bedroom and one bathroom, and it was clean. I did not need anything else. There were activities if you wanted to indulge in like bingo, tv nights, and card games, etc. Also, volunteers came to check blood pressures. It would be nice if there were more parking spaces. I would recommend this place. "

"Haygood Halls is at a tremendous location. It’s right across the street from the Methodist church, and quarter of a block from the local fire station and ambulance squad. It has a shopping center right across the street that’s a little closer to the other street. There are restaurants, stores and a grocery store. The facility is very attractive from the outside, and I liked what it offers as it pays for everything including your telephone, computer and your cable TV. Right now, that’s a huge savings for me. It has a trash pick-up right from the door, twice a week. They also deliver my meals, so I don’t have to go anywhere to get my meal. The maintenance department will put things up for you if you want them to. There are a lot of handles around the tub and the tub is very low, so it’s easy to step into. They also put handles on the front doors and I can push my walker in the foyer, grab the two handles at either side of the front door, and help myself in. The rooms are large with a washer and dryer hook-up, and have pretty adequate storage, I didn’t expect a lot, so I feel comfortable with what’s there. They have a clubhouse, and they have a couple of big activities a month, like pizza parties. You can also rent a space for your own personal use. They have put in a dog park on their property. They have a beautiful pool, and it’s in the center of the buildings that are build around it and that is very attractive. There is plenty of lounging around the pool. The people in the office that I have met are just as warm and friendly as they can be. I think that the quality of my life is going to be much improved because I’m going to have a lot of people to talk to and to be with, and it’s certainly going to be easier for me to live in a smaller area. I believe there is a fairly long counter and some cabinets above the counters, so I can always put things that I usually keep in my kitchen cabinets and in a closet that is off the laundry. I have a little patio at the back that I can go out to. I feel that everything seems more secure and the price is right. I’m really excited and when I finally was ready to make the decision, it was like somebody switched on a light. They were able to show me one of the apartments that I didn’t see last August when I went, and I was delighted to see what was in the apartments. They also have two poles for help; one is in the bathroom, and there’s another one for intruders. Iif you hear somebody messing with your door, you pull the other and that’s in the bedroom, I believe, and that was a plus. "

"My father is going to go to Serenity Care of Virginia for two weeks. Everything was good. The staff was knowledgeable. She came from a big box nursing home-type place and wanted a smaller place to give individual care, which we thought was good. It's just like a regular house. They had about three or four residents and private rooms. One of the things that's also unique there is you eat what you want to eat. You give them a shopping list and they'll make what you want. It's not like everybody used the same thing."

"I did a tour of Lynnhaven Cove in Virginia Beach. It's an independent living community. I walked through the building and all the apartments were occupied so I wasn't able to see one. Overall, the facility itself was lovely and immaculate. The staff who assisted me was very professional and very amiable. The facility was nice and I liked everything about it. They have numerous areas in the community where people can get together."

"I decided to go to Silver Hill at Great Neck. The rent seems reasonable. They said they're renovating every apartment and mine is one of them that they're in the process of renovating, and it looks and nice. The manager was awesome. She was very professional but extremely nice. I couldn't say anything negative. There's a refrigerator, a microwave, and a stove oven. There's a nice-sized closet. I'm hoping that will be enough to get everything in there. It seemed like a good choice. Also, there are two sets of washers and dryers on each floor, which I thought was pretty cool. The manager was great. She was very kind. I felt very comfortable even though I was nervous. But it was a good experience. It seemed very clean."
