The Best Independent Living Communities in Johnson County, KS

"We are on the waiting list for Mission Chateau. We chose them because the people we met and talked to, including the person who showed us around and gave us the tour was spectacular, and that was a very important reason. And the second major reason was the financial model that was used, there was no large buy-in upfront. The person who toured us was friendly, professional, thorough, and a good listener. The place had the things we were looking for. I can't do much physically anymore except swim, and it does have a swimming facility. There are all sorts of activities, clubs, and gatherings that we can choose to get involved in if we want to."

"It's quiet there at Brookdale Wornall Place, even though it's kind of in a busy area. It doesn't have anything behind it. There are fields there. Even though you're not very far off the road, it still feels like you're out in the country. The room has a small kitchen and a refrigerator. We looked at a couple of one-bedrooms. The staff who toured me around was very knowledgeable. It seems like he has been in the business for several years. He was very patient. I had my dog with me, and he took that well, too. The place was clean. I didn't smell anything. They got friendly staff. When you walk in, they got a large entryway. You don't have to walk up any stairs or anything. I noticed that they got ramps. We took the elevator, and we took the stairway, too. They have an underground, which was nice."

"The Crestone Senior Living looked great. It was very clean. I love the staff. The girl who took me around was wonderful. Their food service was like going to a restaurant. It's very nice. The girl also introduced me to some of the people who were there. I liked them. It's brand new. It's only nine years old. So, it's very, very clean, very friendly, and very updated."

"Armour Oaks Senior Living was a nice place. They have nice apartments. I haven't tried their food, but I saw some of it and it looked really good. They have a lot of activities and it would be a good place for my brother. It was a nice visit. They did a good job. I think their floor plans were pretty much the same. Each room has what they call a sunroom, which is a place where a person can go and just kind of relax a little bit. That was very nice. I looked at a one-bedroom. I think it's a good place. I'm going to take my brother there and let him look at the place himself. It's not perfect, but it's nice."

"I went to The Madison Senior Living. It's very open. I didn't see a lot of diversity in the community, but the staff was nice. The patients that were walking around were pretty friendly. The dining area was nice. It was open and bright with a lot of windows, but I didn't try the food. The staff who gave the tour was nice. He answered all my questions and answered things that I didn't think I needed answers to."

"We liked it here. The two-bedroom apartment was spacious. We liked the idea of having the washer and dryer in it. They had a lot of activities and that's what I was kind of going for. The apartment had a kitchen and a microwave, a full stove, and a full-size refrigerator. We were looking at the independent living and then we could go down and eat our meals downstairs. They had what they call the bistro and the day we were there, they were having prime rib and it smelled delicious. They have a theater room where at night, you can go in and watch movies, and I thought that was unique. They play bingo. You can go down and do cards or work puzzles and they take little trips. There was a bus parked in the parking lot. They had a beautiful courtyard where you could go out and sit. They had awnings or umbrellas over the bench to help you from the sun."

"We went to Connect55+ Shawnee. I liked the tour. The apartment was nice. We were looking for a one-bedroom, but the two-bedroom was nice. She didn't show us the one-bedroom. I like those sliding doors they have there. It's small, though, but it was nice. It was nice and neat and clean in there, and even the ones who lived there, we'd see a lot of them walking in and out. The size of the room was pretty big, and they were nice, but the price was above our price range."

"I tour St Anthony's; I like they have all levels of care, The views from the apartments were beautiful and spotless. The food is incredible. the activities and exercise were great always had residents busy. The staff was so friendly and nice."

"My mother-in-law moved into Carnegie Village Senior Living Community. One of the things we like the most is that her apartment is very up-to-date, very spacious, and even though she doesn't cook, or cook much, it still has a full kitchen. So, it really makes it feel more like a home. It's very upkept, very clean. They are in the process of updating all of the outer areas of the assisted living. Right now it's a little dated, but they were going to start construction soon. The independent living is completely up-to-date, very beautiful, and very attractive. I'm hoping that the assisted living will look that good when they finish with it too. They have been very responsive to any concerns that we have had. I'm there a lot with my mother-in-law, and they have come in to explain to her -- for example, she was going to have physical therapy, and she had not met the therapist, but the woman stopped in earlier in the day just to introduce herself and explain to her that she would be coming by later to do the physical therapy. I just thought that was just a nice touch. They didn't just show up and say, "Hey, we're doing physical therapy." I just thought they did a great job. They do have a beauty salon right there at the entrance to the assisted living. The problem is my mother-in-law is not really willing to do a lot of things. I do know that they post activities every week. They post them in the elevator, they post them in the hallways, they send out fliers to all the residents. I've even been there when a staff member came by just to let my mother-in-law know that bingo was getting ready to take place, and if she'd like to come down. They've just done a great job of trying to encourage her to participate."

"I had a nice tour of Elliott Place. I love the place; I just couldn't afford it. And the staff was not offering any kind of promos or anything. He was nice but not a whole lot of information was given other than the paperwork. It's a nice place. It's well-kept and very clean. There were a lot of amenities and features. They offer food, transportation, crafts and activities. I look forward to it. I also talked to a couple of residents there. I really like that they have locks on the doors so that anybody can't just come in."

"Meeting with the administrator at The Groves was a fantastic experience. She had a lot of knowledge and explained the services that were offered. She also gave me a tour. She was just an incredibly warm and compassionate person who understood everything I was looking for, my description of my brother, and the type of services he is going to need. We were looking for long-term assisted living care. My brother doesn't need a lot of assistance right now, but he does need some, and they have exactly what he needs. They have light housekeeping, meals are provided, some oversight of medication administration, and just plain checking on the residents to make sure they're doing well. It was a very pleasant place, very clean, and overall a comfortable home-like setting. The residents seemed to know each other, and the administrator seemed to know by name everybody we encountered on my visit. It was just truly a home-like atmosphere. I viewed mostly the rooms and the main area there, and I loved it."

"My dad has moved into Solstice Senior Living at Lee's Summit. The staff is just awesome. They help you in any way possible. They are very welcoming. They were willing to not only show me, but willing to wait until my sister flew in a couple of days later, and gave me another tour with my sister. They actually offered us to taste their food. Their price is perfect. For everything that they offer, I find it actually cheaper than other places. Even before I had decided, they called a few times just to know how my dad was doing, so they were very pleasant and very wonderful to work with. The facility is beautiful. For activities, they have different events. The location is very close to me, so I can be with my dad whenever I want. I notice how well the employees treat their residents there, so that also made me decide. I wanted to work with somebody that actually showed they care about the people that are going to live there."

"I visited Senior Star at Wexford Place. They have all the amenities I want. It's a little on the older side, but it's well kept. The people are wonderful. There's a pool. It's a little smaller than the other place, which appeals to me. The people who assisted me during the tour were wonderful."

"I went to Connect55+ Independence and met with the manager, Amy. She was just very enjoyable and very friendly. She gave me a walk-through of the one and two-bedroom apartments, but I believe the one-bedroom was already taken. For the price, it is well worth it. They have a gym. It's very independent. If you're in good health and everything, it is a great place to live. I looked at the one-bedrooms and they were pretty spacious. They have a nice closet and liked that they have a separate laundry in the apartments. The kitchens were pretty modern. I was just impressed with the whole thing. It was very clean and very neat. To me, parking is everything. I'm 67 and I'm very active. I come and go, so the parking lot has to be pretty well-lit, and I would feel very safe living there."
