Coon Rapids is a large suburb of Minneapolis known for its outdoor recreational attractions. It’s estimated that 63,599 people live in Coon Rapids, with 16.2% of them aged 65 and over. Affordable health care and a thriving downtown area with plenty of entertainment and shopping options make this town an excellent choice for seniors who want to enjoy a healthy lifestyle close to big-city amenities.
Assisted living facilities provide care to seniors who can remain active but need assistance with some of the tasks of daily living, such as personal care needs, cooking and transportation to appointments. Residing in an assisted living community is a good option for seniors who don’t need the round-the-clock medical care offered in a skilled nursing home but can no longer live an independent lifestyle. Seniors living in the Coon Rapids area pay an average of $4,797 per month to live in an assisted living community, nearly $500 less than the U.S. average.
This guide gives an overview of assisted living in the Coon Rapids area, average costs for care, resources available to support seniors and the pros and cons of living there.

I went to Autumn Glen Senior Living. We went to assisted living and memory care. It was a very, very welcoming place. They’re so accommodating, and they knew all the people living there. They knew them all by name, and that made me feel very comfortable. The staff who gave me the tour was very well informed. The dining room was very comfortable. You could tell that it was taken care of.
Their pricing was a little lower, but then you could have your choice of meals and that could be added into your monthly stuff. It was priced right. They would price them out for the whole month, and every meal that you want would be another $250 per month. So if you’re only going to want breakfast there, you only have to pay $250, and if you only want lunch, it’s $250 for the month. That was kind of a neat thing because the person that I’m trying to get in there or anywhere doesn’t eat much for breakfast, but he would eat a bigger lunch. And they have free continental breakfast. If you just want fruit or maybe a bagel, that’s free. I was impressed really with the whole place. It was very, very nice.

We put my mom in The Eagle Street Facility. It is part of the Mary T corporation. She was already in the Mary T system before, so that’s why we went with Eagle Street. They even helped us get her there quick. She moved in September 9th. She has kind of settled in though we thought she would get angry and mad because she only has a little bedroom now. Eagle Street Facility is more like just a big house. They have 12 residents and each has his/her own bedroom but then they eat together and watch TV together, so it is like a home atmosphere. We looked at different senior living places. A lot of them were really huge buildings with very long hallways and we thought that that would confuse my mom as far as getting to where she needed to. We also didn’t want her to have an apartment that has a kitchenette in it. We wanted her meals prepared for her. Back then, she kept complaining about diarrhea and we thought that she was just eating old foods that she had hoarded and kept in her refrigerator. Those foods made her sick.
While here at Eagle Street, they prepare all her meals and make sure that she comes out of her room and down to the dining room to eat with everybody. They would give them cookies and stuff during the middle of the day as a treat. My mom keeps saying the food is good. I had gotten there when they’ve finishing up to eat and it looked like they give them good portion and it didn’t look all that bad. They have activities for them to do. They even took her back to where she used to live and she took her ceramic class. They do try to entertain them. They do exercises three times a week. For me, they are really set up to help these people and take care of them. However, there was one incident when my mom locked herself in her room and they couldn’t find the key. The next morning, she got out of her bed and fell, but still they couldn’t get into her room. They ended up calling the fire department and breaking the door down to get to her and helped her eventually. We had asked them about the key, but it turned out that the maintenance guy didn’t give the owner the key the day before and then the next day, that’s when she fell. We were upset with that incident. However, except for that, they’ve been really good to her. They talk to her, help her, etc. She has fallen a couple of times, but that’s because she didn’t ask for help. There was a pull cord that she could use at that time but she tried to get up and walk on her own.

My sister-in-law is a resident of the assisted living level, and our experience so far has been very good. The staff is very caring and friendly, I like that it’s integrated living and not just memory care in one ward. The level of staffing allows the patients to get the care they needed and also have the independence they could afford. When the residents want to get together, the community areas are very nice, they also have a crafts area and a nice area outside with a gazebo, benches, and chairs where they could go with visiting loved ones. Other people have told me that the food is very good. It also seems small and compartmentalized enough that you know your loved one would be well cared for. It’s not too institutionalized. They’re also upfront about the pricing, and there are no hidden add-ons, which makes people comfortable.
