Covington is a city of about 14,000 people in the heart of Georgia, about 25 miles to the southeast of Atlanta. This small community offers a wide range of benefits for its 2,100 seniors, including an affordable cost of living, comfortable weather and access to health care services.

Assisted living is a great option for older adults who want to maintain their independence and privacy but need help with some daily living activities. These residential facilities are staffed with trained caregivers who provide personal care services, meals and social and residential activities. Some facilities have cozy studio apartments, while others have more spacious accommodations, and many have indoor and outdoor common areas where residents can visit with friends and family. Monthly rates vary depending on amenities, but the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey reports that on average, assisted living residents in Covington pay $4,000, which is high compared to the rest of the state but low compared to the national rate.

This guide highlights the benefits and drawbacks of living in Covington and outlines the cost of local assisted living services. It also gives an overview of the programs and services available to older adults in the city.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Covington

  • Covington’s overall cost of living is a little lower than the national average and on par with the state as a whole, making it a good option for those seeking budget-friendly assisted living. Local housing prices are about 30% lower than in the nation as a whole, which may correlate with competitively priced residential care.
  • Seniors in Covington don’t pay state income tax on Social Security benefits, regardless of their income. Withdrawals from retirement savings accounts and income from public and private pensions are taxed, but seniors can claim a sizable deduction to offset this expense.

While crime occurs more frequently than in most U.S. cities, both property and violent crime rates have been trending downward for several years. Its violent crime rate is fairly consistent with similarly sized cities in Georgia.
  • Covington’s weather is generally pleasant throughout the year, which may appeal to those who enjoy being outdoors. Summers are hot and humid with high temperatures in the low-90s, but temperatures are comfortable in the autumn, winter and spring. The city sees about 218 sunny days each year compared to the national average of 205, and about 48 inches of rain and 1 inch of snow falls annually.
  • Covington is home to Piedmont Newton Hospital, a 97-bed acute care community hospital with 24-hour emergency services and a range of specializations.
  • The air quality in Covington is subpar compared to the nation as a whole. On a 100-point index, the city’s air quality rates are 10 points lower than the national average, at 48. However, the water quality is good with a rating of 60 compared to the U.S. rate of 55.
