"Unfortunately, my Mom and Dad both needed home care and companionship over the course of the last 7 years. Fortunately, Right at Home | Ocean County was there for them and my family. Our journey with Right at Home began when my Dad finally agreed that he needed some help taking care of my Mom who suffered from dementia. As anyone with a family member who has this insidious disease knows, the whole family suffers. Luckily, we found the great administrators and caregivers at RAH. They helped my Dad for two years until her passing during the early months of covid. After 10 days in the hospital, she returned home with hospice care, but it was Vicki, the newly assigned live-in aide from RAH that was with her in her final moments, two days later. We were thankful for her presence. We got to know Vicki intimately as my Dad who also fought off covid then needed his own 24-hour caregiver and companion. She spoke of a divine destiny and nothing could have been more truthful. Five years later, she was still taking care of Dad and had become a welcome member of our family. We spent time on the phone with Dad and her nearly every day. We visited them often and shared a meal and conversation. Dad had a trach, a catheter, was legally blind and missed his wife every moment. But he marched on with Vicki at his side. She helped him through normal day-to-day challenges, attended family gatherings, sat by his bedside when he had hospital stays, listened to a lifetime of stories, dried his tears when he spoke of Mom, and cheered him on through his 98th birthday. Incredibly, Dad outlived Vicki’s career as a caregiver and friend when she decided to retire earlier this year. Amazingly, the next aide Pierette, brought her own special qualities to Dad for the last 3 months of his life. She too had a spiritual foundation that helped Dad during his final days. Their emotional attachment was fast and sincere. She was there when Dad passed and cried along with us all. I know our family was extremely lucky. I know having two caregivers in a 5+ year period is far from normal. I now also know so much more about the type of person who gives their life to take care of another. They are a very special few, yet we were blessed with two. They were there when both my parents and family needed them. They brought a sense of ease and calm to our family knowing my parents were in good hands. They held my parents hands when they passed and I am eternally grateful. And let me not forget those behind the scenes. Ownership, scheduling, and nursing took my calls and responded positively every time. Darlene, Nichole, Judy and a host of others supported Mom and Dad and my family whenever we needed it. Early on before we had a live-in, one of the hourly caregivers actually volunteered to drive my Dad to a local covid testing site. She knew the risks involved but still stepped up. His positive test was necessary to get admitted to the same hospital and room occupied by my Mom. She may have succumbed, but he got to spend a few extra days waking up by her side. Making the decision to utilize a third-party is difficult. Finding the best provider can be even more difficult. Our family is lucky to have met and interacted with all the good folks at Right at Home. They made what could have been a difficult time in all our lives, one of trust, love and dignity for all."
