Irvine is nestled in sunny southern California and seven miles from the picturesque beaches. Seniors of various cultural backgrounds can feel right at home as the city boasts a robust multicultural community, with residents speaking over 70 languages. Irvine has a population of 287,401, of which 9.9% are seniors aged 65 and older. However, it’s a very safe city, being recognized as “America’s Safest Big City” by the FBI for over 10 years. Seniors who enjoy nature have many options to choose from, as Irvine has the most open space in all of Orange County.

There are many home health care programs for Irvine’s senior citizens. According to Genworth Financial’s Cost of Care Survey 2020, the average cost of homemakers services is $5,434 per month, and the average cost of home health aide services is $5,529. Irvine’s costs are more than the national average of $4,481 for homemakers services and $4,576 for a home health aide.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Irvine, so data for the closest city, Los Angeles, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Irvine area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Irvine Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Irvine:

Property Tax Assistance

Address: 500 S Main St, Fl 2, Orange, CA 92868
Phone Number: (714) 834-2727

Irvine senior citizens are eligible for two state-funded property tax assistance programs: the Property Tax Postponement Program and the Homeowner and Renter Assistance Program. Senior applicants must be at least 62 years old and meet specific income requirements. Those eligible for Property Tax Postponement may defer property tax payments on their home. California would pay the taxes, and the deferred payment would create a lien on their property. The Homeowner and Renter Assistance program will have the state reimburse a portion of property taxes but not create a lien on the property.

Utility Payment Assistance

Address: 11870 Monarch St., Garden Grove, CA 92841
Phone Number: (714) 839-6199

Seniors who need financial assistance for their heating and cooling costs may be eligible to get government funding for their utilities. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) provides one-time financial aid for qualified applicants’ electric or gas bill. For seniors to be considered for the program, they must be an Orange County resident and meet the monthly income guidelines. The Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP) will also offer utility payment assistance for qualified applicants in crisis situations.

Irvine Meals on Wheels

Address: 1 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine, CA 92606-5207
Phone Number: (949) 724-6910

Homebound seniors may be eligible to receive fresh, nutritious home-delivered meals from the Meals on Wheels program provided by the city of Irvine. The program helps seniors in Irvine maintain their independence and remain living in their own homes.

Care Management and In-Home Support

Address: 20 Lake Road, Irvine, CA 92604
Phone Number: (949) 724-6926

The City of Irvine has care managers who can connect seniors living at home to local resources and provide care plan recommendations to help them age safely at home. The program can link older adults to community programs or transportation services, provide regular visits and phone calls or have volunteers visit homebound seniors to reduce feelings of isolation.

Residential Rehabilitation Program

Address: 1 Civic Center Plaza, Irvine, CA 92606
Phone Number: (949) 724-6470

The City of Irvine’s Residential Rehabilitation Program helps low-income homeowners pay for critical home improvements through deferred loans and emergency grants. The program will help eligible applicants in need of accessibility or health and safety home repairs. Homeowners who need repairs that will cost $5,000 or less can also receive emergency grants. These grants are limited to emergency code-related repairs. Eligible applicants must own the home and meet income requirements.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
