The island city of Alameda offers seniors coastline views, lovely weather and convenient proximity to the Bay Area’s major cities. Alameda’s population of 77,624 is much smaller than that of its neighbors San Francisco (881,549) or Oakland (433,031), and about 15.7% of Alameda’s residents are 65 years of age or older. The weather in this area is ideal for retirees who enjoy a cool, moderate climate; average temperatures stay within a narrow band of 48 degrees to 65 degrees all year.
The Bay Area is one of America’s most expensive regions in which to live, which is reflected in Alameda’s very high prices for homemaker services and home health aide services. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, each of those services costs $6,101 per month in Alameda. That represents an over-$1,500 jump from prices elsewhere in the nation, where homemaker services average $4,481 a month and home health aide services average $4,576.
Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Alameda, so data for the closest city, San Francisco, was used.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Alameda area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Yolanda arrives on time every time. She washes my clothes twice weekly.
She never complains, she brings my meals from the dining room. She works well with the other workers at the facility.

While I was out-of-state on a long planned vacation my mother experienced some life changing situation requiring around the clock home care. I contacted Best Home Care and I was very pleased with the immediate temporary solution that Mike was able to provide. He quickly put together a group of very caring and supportive workers who professionally met the needs of my mother.. The only need that was not met was the inability of her providers to provide any transportation, although, they readily accompanied my mother to her doctors.

We have been working with Kindred at Home for four years now. They’re very accommodating. The caregiver that we’ve had for the past two-and-a-half years, Carolina, is priceless. She has been more helpful than we could ever ask for, and my mom just absolutely adores her. She’s like another daughter to her. We have one caregiver now. There are other caregivers available to us if Carolina can’t make it and we needed someone else. We have just been with Carolina for the last two-and-a-half years. It’s more comfortable for my mom to just have Carolina. She helps with everything, cleaning, cooking, and laundry. My mom is a fall risk. She is impaired, a little weak and becomes dizzy sometimes, and is arthritic and so forth. She is using a walker, so Carolina is here just to make sure that she doesn’t fall. She helps her with physical therapy, she takes her outside for walks, and she helps her bathe, basically just everything that we need.
For the entire four years that we’ve been using Kindred, if all of our caregivers were Carolina, they would get a six out of five. We had a few issues in the very beginning with caregivers that were late or wouldn’t show up. Carolina, however, has really set the bar. She’s really amazing and we’re super lucky to have her and very grateful to Kindred for introducing us to her.

I contacted thrive after my uncle had fallen and broke his hip 84 years old and in need of care for staying at home. The staff kept a notebook of his daily needs shower breakfast doing his laundry making sure his meals were set up checking his blood sugar and making sure his pills were being taken. They showed up on time he had three different caregivers for six hours Seven days a week for the first month it was most unfortunate that it was expensive and that we just couldn’t have them care for him .the staff kept me informed of who is going to be showing up on which days and if there was any changes they notified me immediately I a greatly appreciate that because I am out of state from where my uncle was so much thanks to them and their staff. Sorry that we couldn’t keep going with your services due to expenses thank you

My husband used Honor Home Care. Services include companionship, meal preparation, and supervision of pills. I had many different caregivers. Some of them were superb, some of them were not particularly willing or able to engage with my husband. That worked OK when I was working away from home, but when I was working in the home, I found it distressing. There was somebody there with him, but it wasn’t really what I wanted to have done. There were others who were superb at getting him laughing, getting him out walking with them, and engaging with him over meals. One of the reasons I stopped Honor was, in the time of COVID, it seemed as though I had to choose between something that was stable, so that I wasn’t introduced to a new caregiver three or four times a week, or the quality care that I appreciated so much.
I would recommend Honor Home Care. The person I recommended it to has been extremely happy with it. There are a couple of things about Honor’s system that are fantastic. A couple of times a caregiver became ill or a family crisis emerged and they had to leave, and Honor got another caregiver there immediately before the person left. If a caregiver couldn’t come in, they always had a substitute. I got a report every day on how the interaction had gone. I’d give them five-stars even though I was unhappy with them at the end because the COVID has made everything so difficult. That’s where the problem really emerged, and they didn’t have any control over that. Before COVID, it was definitely five-stars, and I’ll leave it there.

Alameda Home Care Resources
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Alameda:
Address: 1155 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501
Phone number: (510) 747-7500
This city-run senior center is staffed by more than 200 volunteers and runs a bevy of senior-related services that include volunteer companion programs, transportation assistance, housing rehab initiatives that can help seniors make their homes safer and less expensive, and help with utility bills. Membership is free and open to adults 50 years of age or older.
Address: 6955 Foothill Boulevard, Oakland, CA 94605
Phone number: (510) 577-3500
APS investigates reports of elder abuse and neglect in Alameda County, which may include physical, psychological or financial mistreatment. There are no income requirements to make use of the service. While reports of potential abuse may be made anonymously and by third parties, APS services are contingent on the senior’s consent, which may be revoked at any time.
Address: 24100 Amador Street, Hayward, CA 94544
Phone number: (510) 670-6000
This program is administered by Alameda County Social Services and supports seniors who need a little extra help around the home to delay or avoid the need for an assisted living or nursing home facility. Alameda seniors can contact IHSS to get help with preparing meals, doing laundry, going grocery shopping and performing similar basic tasks. Applicants must be qualified for full-scope Medi-Cal and show that they need help with performing activities of daily living.
Address: 7900 Edgewater Drive, Oakland, CA 94621
Phone number: (510) 635-3663
Working in conjunction with hundreds of food pantries, this nonprofit organization combats food insecurity in the Bay Area. The ACCFB runs an emergency food helpline that can help callers receive groceries or a hot meal within 12 to 24 hours.
Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
