I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad moved to Hospice of San Joaquin. Due to his progression and diagnosis, they are providing comfort care only. My experience with them is great and I feel very comfortable placing my dad in that facility. The atmosphere there is very homelike. It's only a six-patient bed facility with each patient having their individual private rooms. It is a very excellent place that we chose for him. It makes me feel at peace knowing that he's going to be taken care of in a very great way.

I interviewed this provider

My friend Charley was put into Hospice of San Joaquin 'care' with none of the 10 signs of death as stated by caring.com or a recommendation of his primary physician who was treating him for cancer and had designed a program for Charley. Charley was only 55 years of age and still had life to live before he was overdosed with morphine and other unknown drugs. He was told he was dying and had no chance even though he had agreed to try two more weeks of radiation the morning he was convinced by his 'nurse' sister-in-law that he was dying and should just lay back and 'enjoy' it. After 24/7 care by me for 4 months at no cost to anyone, I was not even consulted as to what I thought. It was a decision made by those who had no real contact with Charley. I was not allowed contact or conversation with Charley without someone in the room or when he was so doped up he couldn't speak. They made sure I couldn't speak with him in private and suggest that maybe it was too early for the hospice care. His sister-in-law nurse had wanted him to enter hospice care months earlier before the doctors had determined the extent and prognosis beyond a 6 month to three year time span. The doctors were working valiantly to extend his life, especially to witness the birth of his first grandson, his namesake. I am not close minded to the idea behind hospice for certain people, even my loved ones, but it was the wrong choice for Charley. He still had life in him, and he should have been allowed to live it. He was right in saying, "I'm too young to die so fast". Be sure you choose hospice care carefully. It's literally a life or death decision.

San Joaquin Hospice overmedicated my 80 year old mom with enough medication to kill a horse. She never woke up after that...If you trust your loved one to them, keep an eye on the medications, there is a difference between comfort care and taking a life

My loved one used this service

Easy to work with, straightforward and honest. Very difficult time for our family and hospice came in and helped to ease my father's pain so he had the chance to die peacefully and with dignity at home with loved ones. I recommend Hospice of San Joaquin over a hospital when needed.
