We set up home hospice care on very short notice with Hope Hospice. It was for my wife who had dementia. The service was excellent and we found the nurses very supportive and knowledgeable. They ordered the necessary equipment for home support in a matter of one day (hospital bed, wheelchair, etc.). As I found out hospice care is primarily used for dementia patients and not necessarily for terminal cancer patients as I first thought. Hope Hospice provides nurses for consultation as well as medication control. They also provide some much needed daycare support and advice. When my wife passed away their whole process was very supportive, comforting and caring. My only regret was that I didn't contact them sooner.

Our family had been signed up with Hope Hospice for one of our family members for 4-5 months . Our experience was that volunteers who were brought in were 100% caring, compassionate, and wonderful, as were staff who made rounds to check up and bathe the patient. However the official office staff (case managers and nurses) unfortunately did not meet our expectation nor the same standards. One of the nurses were so inexperienced they couldn't change a simple catheter and poked around for an hour causing the patient to bleed. We expected hospice nurses and case manager to truly show empathy and possess certain characteristics in order to care for patients in their last days of life. The hospice office staff unfortunately made our family feel as though they were waiting for our relative to pass away. Our case manager needed us to know how important they were, how capable they were, and that they would never make mistakes. There wasn't much humility one would expect in a profession such as this. It was an unfortunately experience, now that we look back after our relative did pass away peacefully with after another hospice care, we feel a tinge of heartbreak for our experience with Hope Hospice. Hope Hospice is a is a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization providing services to communities in the Condra Costa Area since 1980. Hope Hospice has a very professional staff with a wealth of experience, expertise, and specialized education. I found their team of caring professionals to be very caring and compassionate, creating an environment that offers the patient comfort and dignity the the end of life. Also, the agency offers supportive services to family members and friends for up to one year following the death of a loved one. In addition, Hope Hospice provide support groups and activities for adults, teens or children in the overall community who have experienced the death of a family member, friend, or loved one. As a former Director of Social Services at an inpatient sub-acute skilled nursing facility (SNF) I referred patients and loves one to Hope Hospice and would highly recommend this agency to anyone searching for hospice care.
