My father was only in a hospice facility for 3 or 4 days. He had broken his hip, and due to his fragile condition (Parkinson's, feeding tube), was unable to have surgery but to have a morphine pump he had to be in a facility. The women and men who worked there were so compassionate. We had no idea my dad was going to die so quickly; these wonderful folks helped us along the way. They never told us to leave or "go home and rest". The non-denominational minister was there if we needed her. There were snacks and drinks if we so wanted. Someone checked on my dad regularly and told us exactly what was going on, and what to expect as he took his last breaths. They were there for hugs, for shoulders to lean on, to talk about my dad and our family. While my dad said he never wanted to go to a hospice facility because he knew he would die there, we feel we did the right thing to keep him pain free.
