The other place on our top two is Judson Park. We are very familiar with Judson Park because my mom was there, and we have friends who are there and if we decided to stay in Cleveland, that's where we would go. They're flexible in terms of allowing you to combine apartments if you want to. They have outings to the symphonies, they have music on site, they have a little art studio, they have a little fitness center, and they are one of the ones where you pay an entrance fee. They have a continuing care facility. I've eaten there, and their food is good. We have friends who live there, and so we go and have dinner with them periodically in their independent living. We get to see their apartments and talk to them about how they like it. They're all very happy there. The staff members have been very good and very patient with us as we looked at different things.

Deciding on a retirement community can be much like hiring a cleaning service for your home. No one is going to clean your home the way you do. Same thing with a nursing home - no one cares for your parents as you would. However, Judson does a really good job of caring for my folks. I'm a pretty hands-on advocate for them, and the staff at Judson embraces my comments, concerns and questions without missing a beat. I sleep really well at night, knowing that my parents are safe and comfortable. Some of the staff has become extended family to my folks - and to me.

No residence is perfect, but I have had much success working with the staff at Judson to make my father's stay as positive as possible. He's not the easiest guy in the world, so the staff has its work cut out for it. I did a bunch of comparison shopping in/around Cleveland before placing Dad at Judson. He has lived there comfortably for over 5 years now. He is comfortable, relatively healthy and well cared for. I just wish the staff was better compensated for all the hard work they do, and for such little reward. Suzanne Drake Carle Chagrin Falls, OH
