"My husband will be moving into Commonwealth Senior Living at Cedar Manor, and it was superb. It was everything I expected. The people inside the facility, the facility itself, and the rooms I would rate a 10. The staff was great. He has a private room. They have all kinds of activities like bingo. They have something planned every day. They have a schedule for every month they have a new thing. Next month is going to be like European or something like that. They base it on what their hobbies are as they interact with them. I don't know how to explain it. it's just that I've never seen one as nice as this one."

"I chose Chesapeake Place Senior Living for my father because the price was better. I was very reluctant to go because it was further away from my house than I wanted it, but the girl that I dealt with there was very nice, and we just felt very comfortable with her. He's moving into the memory unit. You bring your own furniture and you decorate the room yourself. They have shared rooms, but he's gonna have a little apartment to himself. They had an activity board and it had different things that they were going to do. They have a salon where they can get their haircut and everything. He's going to need more care and we're going to have that. He needs more interaction with people. They have a courtyard and he'll be able to do some planting, but somebody will help him win the garden. He always had a garden at home, so he'll be able to do that. They can have visitors out in the courtyard. He needed more care than we could give him and he needed more interaction, so it's going to be the best. We talked to Carolyn and we talked to the head nurse, and they were excellent and answered any question we had. We got to see a duck, and there's a pond that you can't get to but you can see it. Everything was well kept."

"I went to Viva Senior Living at Chesapeake. Everything was memory care. The person that we met with and took the tour with was very personable, good, knowledgeable, and explained everything well. The facility was old, and it showed signs of age, and the rooms weren't appealing. The staff was very informative, and he followed up several times. He was putting the best face forward for the facility. Somebody comes in for the salon, nail, hair, that kind of stuff. They had a common shower. Bathing was like in a college dorm. You have to go down the hall to get your shower."

"Harmony at Oakbrooke is beautifully well-run with happy residents. It's perfect. The rooms were beautifully laid out. They were unfurnished, so I had to use my imagination. The staff is friendly and I loved it there. I saw a movie theater room, a cafe, a dining room that looks like a restaurant, a lovely entrance with a piano, they have physical therapy if you're prescribed physical therapy, and they have a gym. I saw their menu, but I didn't try the food."

"I am a resident of The Gardens of Virginia Beach. They are very friendly, and they want to help people. My room is fairly large, not small. The food is excellent. They're also extremely helpful. The staff and people here succeed in whatever their ventures are. They're very concerned about modernizing and making things better. Every time somebody moves out there, they are rebuilding and modernizing. I mean, I just have one of the brand-new freezers. They're putting new cabinets in all the rooms as people move out. They're in the process of modernizing and updating the activities. We have everything from church on Sundays, and the Catholics have a service. Then we have visiting pastors come in and hold church with them. Others bring just certain members of their church. We have mental things to do to keep our minds busy and active."

"We did a tour of Harmony at Independence. What we saw were just normal apartments, but you can move over to assisted living, but there's one side of it that's still independent living. It's a very nice and beautiful place. The staff was very friendly. We saw a few residents around and all of them seemed to be very happy. Everybody was welcoming. We had a chance to have lunch there, and the food was good. They have a lot of activities and a big calendar of things for seniors to do. It's very pricey, but I think all of them are. We were just a little taken aback by how much senior care costs. I think that's something that everyone needs to prepare for. But all in all, everything that they offer and what they have in place there, was certainly worth the cost because of the peace of mind that your parents would be somewhere very safe, quiet, and peaceful. I would say that's a good thing. Their staff is very knowledgeable, and I haven't run into anyone that isn't very knowledgeable about senior care. They were able to tell us things that their building offered and doesn't offer. They have a gym and a pool, things like that. They have one big meeting hall that they had like church services, lectures, and things on. They had everything. Once a week or something, they had in home movies. The seniors didn't have to leave that complex, so their amenities were very nice. My mom was very impressed with the food. The building itself was nice looking, neat, and clean. I didn't see anything that was untoward."

"Commonwealth Senior Living is basically at the same level other communities. The staff members were very friendly. The amenities and activities were adequate. They were doing a cooking activity where they had the residents making muffins. "

"My father is in Bickford of Virginia Beach. It's an excellent place, and it feels like home. Their food is delicious. It's very well kept. I have no qualms. I would recommend it. They bring in people from a local church, they have services, games, and music. The staff is very cooperative, friendly, professional, and attentive. They're a positive group of people."

The staff couldn't have been more loving and caring with her from her arrival to Arden Court and through the week that she passed. They were loving, kind, and nurturing to her always. "I toured Harper's Station Yorktown. The staff was great. Everybody we met and were introduced to was great. He still follows up on me, calls, and checks to see what kind of progress he's looking at. We went down and met some of the people who are in the memory care area. The patients all seemed to be friendly. They seemed to be happy. It was a good feeling that you almost felt like you weren't in a nursing home-type facility. Everything around it is fairly new and clean. I would guess that place is probably no more than two years old. The landscape, the facilities around it, the amenities they have in that place, the movies, the outside court, and the entertainment areas they have for people were so nice. They have a band that comes in like once a week and plays. The pricing was right in the ballpark with everybody else. They explained how the lunches worked, that people could come down for lunch. They showed the different lunch rooms. They have a couple of different places and even a bar for them. And the bar is non-alcoholic, but it's like a bar you'd go to somewhere else with all these barstools, tables, and everything around it. It's just that they got all these juices and all kinds of stuff behind the bar. It can make you feel like you want to sit there and play cards with somebody. You could play cards and have your glass of orange juice or something. It's really comfortable. Their lunchroom has a menu on the table, with white tablecloths and menus for choosing what you want for dinner or lunch. Everything gets cooked and everything's done right there. It's not prepared like in a cafeteria."

"We toured Harmony on the Peninsula. We were inquiring about all levels of care. The staff was very friendly. The administrator we met seemed very friendly. The place was very clean. There was no smell. It was a nice place. In the assisted living part, it seemed like it would be like you were kind of living at home. It didn't seem like an institution."

"Harbor's Edge is the assisted living facility where one of my aunts is now residing. Aunt Ella has always regarded her "˜personal independence' as being of utmost importance and it took us a little time to discover a senior community where she would truly be happy and content. The one thing she feared most was the possibility of being treated like a child or having someone hover about-watching her every move. What she wanted was a place where she could experience a full life with as much independence as possible. The staff at Harbor's Edge was very helpful from the very first visit and the director eased her worries by taking all of us on a tour of the facilities; introducing us to some of the other residents and explaining that our aunt's freedom to live her own life would be supported and encouraged. She was thrilled to discover she would have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities from poker to scuba diving. If someone wants to try something that is new or different this staff goes out of their way to help make it happen, if at all possible. Today she remains as happy about her living arrangement as she was the day that she first moved there. She regularly travels to downtown Norfolk to eat at a favorite restaurant, attend the opera or simply enjoy a shopping trip. When she needs help with transportation, medications or other daily tasks she knows that all she has to do is request those services from an available member of the staff. She can enjoy a waterfront view just by looking out of the window or walking along the property of Harbor's Edge. There is even a swimming pool that contains buoyant salt water which is ideal for seniors and others who may have arthritic joints. We know that our aunt is extremely pleased with this particular amenity and you can generally find her relaxing in (or by) the pool on many occasions. This facility has given our aunt a new lease on life during her golden years. "
