The visit to The Kensington - Fort Madison was phenomenal. The staff was really nice. Our contact there was very helpful. We've talked to a few of the people that were on the memory care floor. They showed us one of the rooms that they have there for my dad. We went through the different services there. They have a really nice walkout deck there on the second floor, so you can get some fresh air, and it's secure. Everybody on the staff was phenomenal, from the nurses to the cleaning ladies, all the staff that we've run into and the people living on the floor there. It's a topnotch facility. We were really impressed with it. Everything was well kept, and outside of the facility was well taken care of. We want to make sure that my dad's physical therapy and speech therapy can be done there, and they said sure, no problem. Everybody down there has been really supportive. The staff who toured us was really phenomenal. She actually worked the memory unit for close to 20 years. She is really proud of what they're doing. You have a lot of tenured people there that know what to do and how to handle the situation and take care of the elderly. The staff was really helpful, especially with my mom walking us through the process. They also offer a thing for spouses and families to come in and have a meal for like $7.50 a meal, like my mom could go down there and have dinner or lunch with him. Everything is well groomed. Every one of the rooms is open to the people living there. I didn't see any dust or trash or anything on the floor. Everything is kept up topnotch.

The staff at The Kensington-Fort Madison is caring. They also have nice community activities for the seniors. Just that, my dads diabetic and they don't cater to a full diabetic diet. Also, the staff is changing, but I think they did a great job with COVID, in keeping the residents safe. They do rides, some exercise classes, craft activities, and bingo. They have a hair salon, a library, and a community room, too.

The Kensington - Fort Madison was a very pleasant place to be. The staff was nice and explained everything to us and were very, very anxious to get me to move in there. They have a lot of activities, too, like games and things like that that the residents can play. The rooms were also very nice, very clean, and neat, while the facilities were very clean and very well taken care of. The residents were very pleasant and seemed very happy, too, so that's really impressive.

My mother-in-law is at The Kensington of Fort Madison. Their staff is friendly, caring, and sometimes they go above and beyond. Her apartment is a simple one, nothing fancy. For activities they have crafts, they do baking, and they go on outings. They also have people come and do little programs with the residents or read books to them. They have lots of things going on in there. They have a large meeting area for the families with a fireplace and TV.

We recently lost our mother. Both she and my father finally took the plunge after considerable pushing to move. We knew that mom was continually moving on her downward spiral and dad is legally blind and the care at home was too much for the at home nursing and myself. This was a huge adjustment for the entire family and the Kensington as well, but they handled mom very well as she could be very tough at times. When the time came for her to go, there were a few people that really stood out to us during her care and we wrote the Kensington to let them know and this is what we told them "I would like to mention a few members of your staff that really have stuck out and have gone that extra mile for us and really held up to your standard to the community of treating the residents and their family like they are your own. Crystal, Chelsea, Bobby, Adrian and the nurses (Renee and Shandra). My apologies to the ones that I did not get names from or forgot names, but these six really stuck out strong!" Now that some of the dust has settled and Dad is there on his own and learning to be without her, we are finally getting to the point where things are starting to slow and getting to a new normal. (just an interjection to say that I am a tough "grader" most times mostly on myself, but feel there is always room for improvement). The staff continually checks on him, offers a smile and is learning about the type of individualistic care that he is in need of that Mom always did for him so they never mentioned. It is these small things that help him feel at home and like he belongs in their community as a member. Recently Mandi G. and Leia M. sat down with Dad and myself just to see how he is adjusting with dad being gone and to learn a little more about his personal life and really get to know who he is as a person and what his individual needs are as they are changing. There really are not very many places that will take individual time with a resident to find these things out about a person to ensure that they are giving the care that is needed and improving where they need to. Hats off to the Kensington in Fort Madison Iowa! I can only hope that there is some kind of grant that can be obtained that can help the facility continue to grow and obtain staffing and develop more for the residents!

My mother was a resident of The Kensington for 5 years prior to her passing. The staff at The Kensington were always friendly and respectful and went out of their way to help meet the needs of each resident. The Kensington provided a friendly, clean, well taken care of and safe place for my mom to live when she could no longer live alone. The staff at The Kensington always kept in close contact with me regarding mom. I had piece of mind knowing that mom was at The Kensington and was being well cared for!

This is a well rounded community where residents and staff care for each in a professional manner. One that is goes beyond the level of a place that offers services. Family values are built here as people develop relationships that are more than a service. True kinship are forged and family values that come from the heart are formed. Evenings of playing games on cold winter evenings, day trips out on the town, shopping, dining, boating, fishing. The memory care residents even have the opportunity to take advantage of these kinds of outings also. They have an ice cream machine available to use, the facility also serves the community with a home delivered meal service,(it gets high mark on quality of food). Very well rounded as I started out. A good place for community activities and service. There is even a card clubs that are not residents that use the facility to have there card club meeting, because they enjoy the facility.

My parents were residents of the Kensington for several years as my dad had Parkinson's Disease and mom could no longer care for him on her own. They had a lovely suite which served them well as they were quite social. My siblings and I live several hours from the area so knowing that they were in a facility in which they were happy and well cared for made us quite comfortable in being so far away. Before dad passed away in 2014, he had assistance in dressing, showering and even turning over in bed at night. Both parents enjoyed the activities with other residents, especially rides to church. At the end of mom's life she was on the memory care unit. I was so very impressed at the care she received, for less than a month, by the staff. She was checked on constantly and with respect. I was happy to know that each of my parents spent the last years in a place that where they seemed to feel so at home.

The staff is always very polite. The location looks great and includes a little sitting area out front and on porches on all floors. There are common areas, and the place is decorated in vintage items. It has the feel of a very nice hotel where you are having an extended stay. I do wish, however, that they offered more outing opportunities for residents like my great grandmother, who are experiencing mild dementia. She doesn't like that most people on her floor, all dementia patients, don't speak. During group time there is little interaction between people. My grandmother can still carry on a conversation, even if it's a little repetitive, and she would like to be able to go outside on outings beyond just being taken to a chair to sit on the porch. I also wish they had a little garden, or even just a garden room, where people can be assisted in potting a plant or two for their room, or to keep in the "garden room" and check on, water, and if they are edible plants, then harvest. This little bit of responsibility and interaction I think could keep people with mild dementia from loosing more of themselves with lack of interaction and it would make their days feel fuller and more productive.
