The Best Independent Living Communities in Perry County, PA

"My father-in-law loves Brookdale Grayson View, and he is doing very well. He thinks he has lived there all along, but he has dementia, so it's going quite well. The staff is great, they call me almost every day with questions and stuff, and they are very attentive. It's a shared room, and they only put dementia patients with another person -- they don't leave them alone. There's a shared bathroom, and they each have their own bedroom area. They find out what the patient likes, and they let him help with cooking, cleaning and social activities. He loves going to breakfast, lunch, and supper with everybody. When we visit, we make appointments, but only two people could get inside. I didn't try the food, but they asked me what he likes and dislikes. They said he is an extremely good eater, so it must be decent food."

"Kindred Place Harrisburg was very nice and the rooms were nice. I didn't have any interaction with the staff during the tour, but the manager that I interacted with was very nice. The overall living atmosphere was very good; it was very nice. I looked at the apartments and the facilities. The apartments have a large space."

"Country Meadows was nice. It would have been my second choice, but the managers just seemed uppity, not down to earth. "

"My visit at Silver Springs Courtyards was very nice and the staff was very knowledgeable. They had these little cottages that were 1-bedroom apartments. The parking was OK, but you had to walk pretty far to get to your cottage. They had a washer and laundry area, and they also had a community room. It was a very nice community. The apartments were very tiny and didn't have a dishwasher. You're lucky if you can fit a very small table in the kitchen. The living room and bedroom were also very small, including the closet space. The staff member that gave me the tour did a good job."

"My father likes Ecumenical Retirement Community. He likes the people and the staff. He is happy there. He likes the food, and he said it is good. As for activities, they watch movies, get to work out, and do exercise in the chair. They celebrate birthdays, and they have physical therapy and speech therapy. They give haircuts and do hair. They clean your clothes. They're pretty great. My father is in personal care. He needs help with toileting, getting his clothes on, and assistance with bed and showers. If they have elderly people in their families who need assisted living or something reasonable, they should go there. It's a great, clean community."

"The Woods at Cedar Run is a wonderful facility. It is beautiful and secure. Their staff is wonderful. They're my sisters. They take care of my mom and she is comfortable there. Overall, I am very impressed with this place. "

"I am moving into Bethany Village. The room is excellent, I am looking forward to it. The staff are fine, wonderful people, and I know most of them so it's like going home again. They have everything you can imagine. They have a gym, a pool, and exercise facilities. They have a medical facility, a pharmacy and a bank. They also have a bistro that is going to open in February. There's a lot of amenities. In fact, Bethany has been chosen as one of the top 20 in the country. During this Coronavirus, they have been one of the few that has maintained very few cases, if any, compared to some of the others in the area. So they are very cautious, and they are very caring about their residents."

"The Keller House is under new ownership and improvements are being made daily (even though I didn't think it was bad before). Rooms being painted and new carpeting going in. Meals are good (according to the resident I am the POA for) and the new owners are constantly working on improving the facility. New breakfast, lunch and dinner times, allowing me more time for doctor's appointments in the morning. Residents continue to enjoy board games, some physical activities if they are interested, etc. I love the HOME feel of the building, unlike the large, much more expensive senior living facilities in the area. It's not a large facility and the residents seem to like that. I know I did when I visited in 2016 when looking for a less expensive facility for the elderly lady I look after. Even back then, before all the improvements, it still had a nice, friendly feel to it and the owner was easy to talk to and work with. Not for everyone, I know, but if you're looking for a place in a small town, close to everything and not super expensive, at least call, set up an appointment and give them some consideration. Wish I had moved my friend there sooner. She's happier than she was in a larger, more expensive facility. "

"It was very nice. The people who lived there seemed very pleased. They had separate houses, which were spacious. They had a very nice social creation area. They had an outdoor pool and different rooms where different activities took place. They had an activity director and they had different games. "

"My mother-in-law lived here for over 10 years. It is like a campus with many housing options. She lived in a studio apartment first and when she could not care for herself, she moved into a wing for patients with dementia. This facility has it all and she enjoyed living there. She was the shuffleboard champion one year! The old saying, "You get what you pay for," is true here. It was expensive, but the amenities and care were top notch. There is really a sense of community and they encourage families to be there for their loved ones. If I had to go to one of these places, it would be at the top of my list. "

"I really liked it here. It was one of the three that we ended up thinking that could be a good place for mother in law. They gave us a nice tour of the place. It was very nice, clean, and pleasant. One gentleman told us he’d been to many nursing homes and this was the best. The staff was nice."

"We visited The Middletown Home. I like the building itself, the people that were in there, and the cleanliness of the place. Everything was clean. Comparing it to other places, they have a significant amount of staff and you see them everywhere, which I like. Their staff has been there for years, which I think is a good thing too. I thought that the cafeteria and food types that they have was a good set-up. They have two different cafeterias. They have a wide variety of menu options. Overall, The Middletown Home was my favorite place."

"I chose Country Meadows for my parents because it's very close to my house. It's also close to Hershey Medical Center, so care is more convenient. The staff there are excellent and very friendly. Their interactions with the residents are always good. They are always trying to get my parents involved in getting out not settling in their rooms. My parents like them. For activities, they have bingo, movies and some religious activities. They also like the food they serve there and they're much happier being in that facility. I would recommend this place. "
