Barton Towers Co-op is located near downtown Royal Oak and is a 15-story, 210-unit senior community for affordable living ages 62 and over. A limited number of apartments are available for younger persons who are physically disabled and need the special features of a unit designed for the mobility impaired. Barton Towers is nationally recognized as “A Community of Quality” by the National Affordable Housing Management Association. The property was completed in 1983 and has been recently remodeled. Barton Towers is gradually transforming into a 100% smoke free co-op. While no one is allowed to smoke in any common area and within 25 feet of the building, there are approximately ten members who are still permitted to smoke in their own apartments because they signed a waiver prior to the full implementation of the new smoking rules. All new members as of 8/18/2012, are not allowed to smoke inside their own apartment. Resident members enjoy the peace and privacy of their secured apartments with all apartments above the first floor having walkout balconies overlooking downtown Royal Oak. Members enjoy activities such as line-dancing, bingo, monthly birthday celebrations, supper, holiday celebrations, Wii exercise, along with trips to nearby shopping malls, casinos, cider mills, and theaters. "I love Park Place, but it was big. It was two storeys, and I was trying to stick to a one-storey place for my mother. It was just beautiful. It made you feel like you're on vacation. I like their dining setup. When you walk in, you see all the tables, and everyone was friendly. They had a lot of activities -- indoors and bus trips -- and they had a theater inside. I just wish it was cheaper. "

They also offer their residents a building van and this senior community takes many trips in their onsite van; to the casino, Frankenmuth, malls, etc. This senior apartment building has 151 apartments for their seniors to live in a luxury and affordable life style for those seniors that are on low income budget or a low fixed income budget. They can have an increased chance to live in elegance and luxury also. Madison Heights Co-op Apartments is an ideal and a great place for any senior to enjoy their golden years and enjoy a very nice suburban life style. The residents there are a team together and they like it there. They enjoy ice cream together there. They socialize and interact with one another there also and they seem to be very happy there. They offer their seniors there an array of services and amenities there. They have their very own library, recreational and activity rooms, central air conditioning, heat all are also included in their rent. They provide building activities for all of their seniors to enjoy. They provide Social activities on a daily basis for their residents. They also offer their residents coffee shop for them to meet each other and socialize and interact with one another on a daily basis. In general, I would rank this facility a five stars rating for their excellence and expertise for providing luxury apartments for low income seniors to live in. "

"We visited only one, and that was Windermere. From what we've seen, it was very nice actually. It was absolutely gorgeous. I think it was a hotel before they turned it into a senior home, so you can imagine how it looks -- the lobby and everything else was gorgeous. It's got a pool; it's got everything you want. It was a gorgeous dining area that had white tablecloths; it was a first-class place. "

"American House Troy is located fairly close to my family, which is very good. They have available parking close to the apartments. The laundry is close to the apartments. It is very promising. The staff are extremely patient. They are extremely pleasant and very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. I also noted that the residents were happy, chatty, and smiling; therefore, something must be going right. At the moment, they are having some shortages of employees in dietary. They are not using the dining hall at supper. They are delivering meals to each person's apartment, but that will be corrected as soon as they can hire enough employees. The place was clean. There were no body odors on the floor. When I toured through, there were people gathered in different places, in different rooms, and doing different things. The activities director was very busy. He had lots of things to do, so that's impressive. The menu looked good. I did not eat a meal there, but it did look good and diversified. I was introduced to the head of housekeeping. The two-bedroom apartment comes with a dishwasher, even though you have meals available should you choose. Every apartment has a balcony or a patio. The only thing that is lacking compared to other people is they do not have a basement, so there is no basement storage. That doesn't affect me because I travel light, but it may be of some concern to some people who have lots of treasures at home."

"I chose Sterling Place for my aunt because I like that it was available, it was affordable, and the administrative staff was very personable. My aunt was living with me and I was caring for her, but my job ended, so I have to go wherever I can find a job, which may not be local. So, I needed to find a place where I could either get services for her or a safe place for her. So that was the urgency. Because my job has ended, I don't have the resources to pay extra on a routine basis for her to go to assisted living, so I'm trying to get her qualified for Medicaid. She has Medicare, and Medicaid offers more support. So what I do is I have a young lady that I have on call if I can't be here to help her, so we're using services on an ad hoc basis. Right now, my aunt has a nurse who comes, a bathing aid that comes, and occupational therapy and physical therapy associated with her recent hospital stay. That's not going to be forever, but we are hoping to get her back to as close to independence as possible. She is here because this is what we could afford with her Social Security. Regarding the food, they have a service where you can order dinner meals. The apartments have a kitchen, so I plan to prepare food ahead. I have to buy her a microwave because she can't use a stove, but she knows how to use a microwave. I'll prepare things in the refrigerator. She can take it and then microwave it, so we have a whole system. We haven't experienced their amenities because she just moved in, but they have a common area. In the brochure, they say they have a salon. I know they have a big porch on the front where you could go and sit. They said they have a van where they go on some scheduled trips and things. They have an activity board where they post everything. My aunt's apartment is nicely sized, but things are very dated, so that's the unfortunate part. It's large compared to some of the other ones that I saw. It has a nice little area for a little dining table. It has a kitchen, a fairly nice sitting room, a separate bedroom, and a bathroom. It has a hall closet and a linen closet, but no pantry. I like the fact that the staff is very attentive. The property is a little dated, but it is clean, and for the most part, they're conscientious. They're excellent. It's value-centric, which is why we're here. You get a lot for little."

"I toured American House Grosse Pointe at Cottage. If you're a Grosse Pointer, it's a good place. That's the only really positive thing other than the staff. The staff was very nice. I've known a number of people that have lived there also. That's why I looked at it, I was familiar with it. I was interested in the price. It's a former hospital that's been refurbished, so the rooms are adequate. There is no barber shop. They did have a beauty shop, a beauty/barber shop I assume. The building was well maintained. You look out, your views are of rooftops in the city, it's just very generic. Its main attribute is location, and for a family looking for some place for a parent, that is convenient."

"American House Southfield was very beautiful. I love it, but they wanted her to pay utilities on top of the rent. I like the appearance of the apartments and the entire building. They had one and two-bedroom apartments, and the rent was reasonable. They had nice dining rooms. They did have a gym and things for physical therapy. "

"I liked Maple Heights. They were a little cheaper. The only thing was they only had two small elevators for the whole building, and it's a pretty big building. Other than that, I liked everything about it. It was nicely updated and all the residents seemed truly happy to be there. They were walking around and enjoying the grounds. I liked the activity and the feeling of the place. It was beautiful and updated nicely. There's new carpet in the hallways and each door had a personalization to it, which I liked. They have balconies and I like that, too. The woman who did the tour was very helpful and had answers to every question."
