What to Consider About Assisted Living in Goleta

The California Department of Social Services’ Senior Care Licensing Program monitors and licenses assisted living facilities in Goleta and throughout the state. It sends field staff out to perform regulatory inspections from 13 regional offices. The Santa Barbara Adult and Senior Care Unit covers Santa Barbara County as part of the Woodland Hills North Adult and Senior Care Regional Office.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Goleta

  • Goleta retirees benefit from California’s tax exemption on Social Security income. Most other retirement benefits are taxed, but low-income and middle-income seniors pay a much lower income tax rate than those with hefty incomes.
  • The cost of living in Goleta is much higher than the national average by about 77% and higher than the state average by about 27%. However, a big chunk is a result of housing costs being 2.5 times higher than the national average. In contrast, costs for health care are about 4% lower, utilities are nearly 10% less and transportation is about 5% lower.
  • Despite its much higher cost of living, Goleta has lower sales taxes than most of California. The average combined sales tax rate in California is 8.82% but Santa Barbara County’s sales tax is 7.75%, with 6% in California sales taxes and 1.75% in county taxes, which includes 0.25% in county sales tax and 1.5% in special district sales tax. Overall, the county has lower sales taxes than 68.5% of other cities and counties in the state.
  • Seniors benefit from having a hospital nearby. Although the Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital has a Santa Barbara address, it’s only about a mile from Goleta. The general medical and surgical hospital has an on-site emergency department and was rated high performing in four adult procedures and conditions, including the treatment of pneumonia and hip fractures as well as hip and knee replacements.
  • Residents enjoy a lower crime rate in Goleta. While the national average for violent crime is 22.7 on a scale of one to 100 with 1 being the best, Goleta is rated at 13.4. The city’s property crime rate is also lower, at 23.8 compared to 35.4 nationally.
  • Goleta has an amazing climate that earns 9.7 out of a possible 10 on the comfort index for its summers. Its average July high is 73 degrees Fahrenheit, while the January low is 43 degrees with fewer than two winter nights when temperatures fall below freezing.
