The Best Assisted Living Communities in Madison County, AL

"I'm going to Madison at the Range. The people were extremely nice and helpful, and I liked the location. It's a good place. I have a little dog and the apartment that I'm moving into is really good where I can just take him out my apartment door into the yard. Having a good place for him was very important to me, and the cost is very reasonable. The staff was excellent, friendly, very knowledgeable, and very helpful. She has told me, I don't know how many times, "If you need anything, you let me know." When someone moves out, they totally redo. They repaint everything. My apartment has brand-new carpet in it as well. I had lunch with some of the residents one day. The food was very good. The dining area and everything there is spotless. The whole facility looks brand new and so clean. They gave me a calendar for June, and there was something that you could be involved in every single day if you wanted to. One day I went there and they were having a luau. All the residents had on the leis and everything. It was really, really nice. They have exercise activities, games, and puzzles. I can be very busy if I want to be."

"I visited Gardens of Hazel Green for my friend who needed assisted living. I thought it was very nice and very well-run. It was a small place but they had activities for the people that live there. I was pleased with it but they were saying that my friend had to be able to get herself to the dining room to eat, and we didn't know how she would react to her chemo yet. They've updated half of their facilities and it was very nice. They're in the process of updating the other half. All the ladies that we came across during our visit just loved it there. It was a strong and very active community. We only interacted with the manager and she was very informative and very helpful. The rooms were basic with a bathroom. They weren't fancy, but they were nice. It was a small facility but they had a courtyard in the middle. It makes a round or rectangular area, and they have big rocking chairs for everybody to sit and rock on the porches. I thought it was very pleasant."

"The Goldton at Athens was very nice. It's not that old. The facility was really beautiful. The problem there was it was not a good location for me and the dog. There was no exit out of the apartment directly into the yard. I had to take him out in the hall and out to the exit door. There wasn't very much yard space. The staff member during the tour was excellent, very friendly, and very encouraging. She knew I had lost my husband, and she is certainly the right person for the job. The dining area was beautiful. The room was basically like the other assisted living places. It had a living room kitchen combination and a bedroom. My number one concern was there was no outside exit in the apartment. I couldn't go open a door and be outside with my dog. There were people working puzzles, and a lot of them just sitting around visiting with one another. There was an elevator if you weren't on the first floor. It was right after lunch, and I think almost everybody must go take a nap or something. It definitely would have been my number one choice if it had been the right accommodation for me and my dog."

"My mother is already in a home called Limestone Manor. It's a veteran's assisted living and only veterans or veteran spouses can be admitted there. My dad was a veteran, so they're helping with the finances there. She does pretty well on her own. This morning, she even changed her bedsheets by herself. It took her a while because she couldn't do anything and was holding on to something, her walker and all. Even though they have people there to help her, she likes to do things on her own if she can do it. I heard a lady when I was on the phone with her this morning, she came to the door and said, "We're going to wash bed sheets today, you want me to help you change them?", and my mom said she's already done it. The lady said, "Now you know you're supposed to wait for us to help you. That's why we're here." They take good care of her. One thing she loves is the best food that she has ever eaten in her life. They have a cook there. My mother is particular about eating other people's cooking. When she was at home, she didn't like the Meals on Wheels coming by with food because she didn't know where it came from and who cooked it. But she said, this place, they give you so much food, they fill you up and it is so good. She says she has not had one thing that she didn't like. Now she doesn't like fish at all but they served some grilled tilapia one day, she tried it, she liked it and she ate it. I couldn't believe it. The cook there is such a nice lady. Everyone there is so sweet and so nice. All of the attendants, the director, and the assistant director. She helped me with all the paperwork because I had no idea what I was doing, trying to get her into the home. She put me in contact with the man who could help me and they were all just wonderful. They had daily activities. They have them sit in a chair and do exercises with their arms and their legs. They play bingo and give prizes. As far as I know, bingo is the only game they've played so far. One day though, it was St. Patrick's Day and it was before she moved in, we were just there visiting and they were making crafts. They had done a mason jar, painted it green, and put glitter on it. They put fake flowers in it that were green. They made it for St. Patrick's Day. She missed out on that, but I'm sure they'll probably do some more crafts pretty soon for Easter. They're all wonderful, nice, and always in a good mood, smiling. My mom's a little hard of hearing, so they know they need to speak up for her and they do. The cleaning lady is very nice to her and even the handyman they have. He is very thorough and they have him hanging pictures and stuff. He's as sweet as he can be. and I haven't met anyone there who is not nice. The community is very nice. I think they only have 20 or 30 rooms there. They're all on one wing so everyone has a window. Everyone hangs wreaths on their door, that way they can tell if the room is empty. I told my mom that the ladies in the hallway told me to tell her that she needs to put her wreath on because everybody has a wreath on their door. It matches the seasons too. I got her a little wreath of spring flowers and all that and hung it on the door. They change it by season and which makes it look very nice down the hallway. Beautiful paintings are hanging down the hallways too. I think some of the people who had lived there have painted some of those, but some look so professional. They're just gorgeous paintings and they're all framed in. It's also always so clean. To the end of the hall, there's a larger area where the nurse's desk is at. There is also a big, round, gorgeous oak table. It looks like an antique and there are chairs all around it. There's a huge television and a lot of the ladies sit out there and watch TV. They could watch it in their room, but they'd rather sit out there and talk to each other. You go to the right and then there is a commons area, and that's where the front door is at. They call it the commons area because the assistant director has her desk in that room but there's also a huge gas rock fireplace and there are all kinds of beautiful furniture that look antique. There are couches and chairs and tables all around the fireplace where they can gather and talk. It's just a wonderful room. At the end of that room, there's a long table and that's where they sit and do crafts or play bingo. That's where they have church too. They move the chairs around and they have church on Wednesdays and Sundays. The dining room where they eat has gorgeous curtains and it looks like you're in a fancy restaurant. The tables are all round and they all have white tablecloths. I haven't tried their food yet because they only cook a certain amount to not waste food. The director told me they do not serve leftovers. She said, if I want to eat with my mom, I should tell them the day before and the cook will make more and have enough to eat. The people that live there have a choice of whether they want to eat a large portion, an average portion, or a small portion. My mom always asks for a small portion, but she said it's still a lot of food and she never had any complaints about the food at all."

"I was very impressed with Limestone Lodge. It was clean, and they had very nice staff there. The dining area was nice and clean, and the rooms were nice, too. The person who toured me around was nice and very informative. They had an activity room and an exercise room."

"My mother loves Country Cottage - Decatur. It's beautiful. They have a beauty parlor, a nurse practitioner that comes by to see them, and all kinds of activities in the mornings and afternoons on and off-campus. They have a bus available and they take her to her doctors' appointment. They furnish three meals a day, and she has phone and cable TV. The staff is very courteous, very respectful, and they're truly interested in what she needs."

"I toured and had a discussion at Columbia Cottage - Hartselle. It needs to be updated. It's clean, but dreary. The rooms needed an update. The staff member during the tour was great. She was very helpful, warm, and very willing to provide information. They have their menu of activities, but I didn't see anybody doing anything. The only thing I saw were people sitting around in the dining area when I got there."

"We chose Fleming Farms for my parents-in-law. They have yet to move in, but we have a deposit there. It was beautiful. We liked the people we met, the caretakers, the managers, and the location. It met our needs. They had a movie room, a pool, a game room, a library, and three dining areas. It was very well done. They had a beautiful courtyard and behind the facility was a farm-like atmosphere, and very serene. The grounds were beautiful."

"I'm in Regency Retirement Village - Huntsville. What I like most is the activities available and the kindness of the people. I chose this place because of the availability of physical therapy and the frequency of activities. Today, they're having a party for people who have birthdays in May. They have occupational therapy and something for people who have difficulty swallowing. I'm in a wheelchair, and it's difficult to get around. Sometimes, they'll push me in the wheelchair. Sometimes, they just walk by. The residents are all friendly. The rooms are very small. They're tight, especially with a wheelchair."

"Magnolia Trace is a huge senior living community. They have independent living and duplex housing. It is a gated community, and they have club houses. They have multiple wings that are independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and rehab. It is a huge place. That is where we will go if we could get a rehab bed for my dad, and mom will go to assisted living. It offers everything that any senior adult community offers. My only complaint there -- which they have been agreeable to work through with us -- is that they do not offer assisted living for couples. They are all single room which is a little behind the times these days because there are so many senior couples that might need assistance. That has been kind of difficult for us, but they have been more than accommodating to offer to join two rooms to make a suite for my parents. They are willing to work with you. If you are looking for senior adult for assisted living for two people, you have some much nicer options in other places. Their independent living is lovely. They have all sorts of options for independent living, but assisted living has only one level of care. It's catered to single people -- primarily women. "

"A friend of ours recommended Kauhale for my father-in-law. We could not be more pleased! Everyone is kind, courteous, friendly, and extra caring. The facility is spotlessly clean and the landscaping is beautiful. They have 3 room sizes - studio, 1 bedroom, and 2 bedroom. The food is excellent and plentiful. activities at the facility include bingo, dominoes, a weekly happy hour, musical events, and special occasion family gatherings. They also have regular excursions out of the facility for lunch, fishing, or shopping. All in all Kauhale provides excellent care for our loved one at a very reasonable price. Highest possible recommendation!"

"We toured. The apartments are large and have a full-size bathroom and closet. The staff is very friendly. The outdoor area is lovely. The overall community there is just very welcoming. It's just like an impromptu lunch they were having for the whole community, that's why we went over. It was just hotdogs but they were very good. They were excellent. I complimented the chef when he came out."

"My mother has moved into The Neighborhood at Madison. It's really open and clean. Everything about it is very inviting and very clean. Every one of the staff has been really helpful, really warm, and inviting too. They offer the ability to be really involved in the activities. They've already asked my mom a few times for recommendations of what she wants to do. I know they have short exercises every morning and some crafts, but they really encourage their community members to be involved in picking out things. I haven't had any of the food, but my mom loves it. I know it's great. They're really attentive to diet, like low salt and no sugar. They do a good job."

"Madison Village is a convenient location. It has a washer and dryer in the apartment and the full kitchen is great. The space is nice and it's a brand-new apartment. Nobody's lived in it yet. They'll bring food to your door and I really liked all the staff. They also have assisted living there and you can have activities and all that kind of stuff. They have buses that'll take you to your doctor's appointments and the price is right. The lady who did the tour was very knowledgeable and knew what I wanted. She told me what her pluses were and showed me different apartments. She explained everything to me, what the amenities were and how it worked. My son and I both had a delicious meal there and it was just great. It's set up like a pod with 8 units in a square and then you have a courtyard in the center and a community room in that section. It's a great situation."
