There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Wareham:

Senior Citizen Tax Work-off Program

Seniors in Wareham who earn less than $37,750 per year have the opportunity to work off some of their real estate tax burden by volunteering. Participants can volunteer up to 100 hours and receive $1,200 in real estate tax credit. This compensation is given in the form of a voucher that can be submitted to the Tax Collector as proof of volunteering. Applications for this tax credit are available at the Selectmen’s Office, or at the Wareham Council on Aging or its website.

Family Caregiver Support Program

The respite services offered through this program include homemaking, personal care, laundry, grocery shopping and companionship. These services are designed to provide relief for caregivers and help seniors in the community avoid having to move into nursing homes. FCSP can also help families develop their own self-care plans. This program is provided by Old Colony Elder Services.

The Housing Assistance Corporation of Cape Cod offers low-income seniors in Wareham several different programs that can improve comfort, increase energy efficiency and lower energy bills. These programs include weatherization, fuel assistance, appliance replacement and heating system repairs and replacement. In order to qualify, applicants must earn 60% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI). Approved applicants receive a free home energy assessment to determine their exact needs.

Their services include health screenings, social day care, fuel assistance and local transportation. The Old Colony Elder Services organization offers a Meals on Wheels program for seniors in Wareham who are unable to obtain or prepare their own nutritious meals and are unable to make it to community dining meal sites. Upon approval, a dietitian will visit the applicant’s home to evaluate their dietary needs and discuss general nutrition issues. Deliveries are made Monday through Friday.
