"My brother was in Westmont Woods (Presbyterian Home of Greater Johnstown) for therapy, but it was too expensive for him to go into assisted living. It's a beautiful, nice, and modern-looking building. They had so much staff, and the rooms were small and felt cramped. They treated him well, but I wasn't really happy with it. Communication was very poor, and the staff was just too busy. They had a lot of help, but none of them could spend too much time with him because they were filled to capacity with patients. "

"While searching for a personal care home for a family member I want to note the very positive experience we had with Amber Springs at Laurel Wood. The personal attention the residents receive from a warm and caring staff was kind and genuine. The room options were lovely.... fresh, clean, and modern with walk in showers with seats and hand-held shower heads. Beautiful views from the residents rooms, dining area, and other common areas surround the facility. The Administrator gave us a personal tour and took whatever time we needed, sensitive to the fact that this was a very important decision we were making. In this moderately large facility, he knew each resident by name and stopped to lend a hand to a number of people during our tour. Most notable to me, was a very pleasant staff that seemed happy to be there, and greeted us with warmth and reassurance. Amber Springs at Laurel Wood is a place well worth your time and consideration! "

"I find the Church of the Brethen home to be a clean facility with limited staff. The staff at times is overwhelmed by the amount of total care patients. If you are a resident that is able to take care of your own personnel needs and you require limited assistance from the nursing staff, this would be an excellent facility to reside in. "

"I had relatives and neighbors that were at Laurel View Village, and they had no problem with it. It's a really nice place and it is a whole lot bigger. They have a swimming pool, a weight room, a craft room where they do some woodworking, and a lot more amenities. My two neighbors bought cottages there, while my father-in-law got a two-room apartment. The staff was great. Their food was very good, and they had a nice restaurant. They give people an allowance per month. My father-in-law would have us there and feed the whole family because he didn't use all his allowance. Also, they were a good value for the price."

"We will not be moving my father-in-law from Haida Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center because it's just too convenient for the family. They give us medical attention, as well as the personal care. They're very caring towards their patients. They do what's necessary for their well-being. They keep the family informed. The physical condition of the facility is good. There are places where they allow the people to sit with their loved ones. My father-in-law has been in both semiprivate and private rooms. The rooms are nice, and they can bring in whatever they need to for his care. He is not able to do activities. I know they have activities there. We were looking into them at the beginning, but he went downhill so quick. He's not able to do any activities. They're taking good care of my father-in-law. With everything, there is always room for improvement; everything I have seen has been up-to-date. The staff members have been keeping us updated. Any time my husband called with questions, they either answer him right then or get back to him within an hour. The staff is good too."

"The Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg in Hollidaysburg PA was an extremely wonderful place for my grandmother to stay after her stroke a few years back. After a lengthy rehabilitation process my family and I chose Presbyterian Village for my grandmothers extended care as we would not be able to do it ourselves. The staff at the nursing home was wonderful providing both my family and my grandmother with counseling as we needed during our hard time. The home had many wonderful residents as well that provided company for my grandmother when family was unable to visit. The rooms and facilities of the home were very well maintained and it was just a great place for her to be, it never seemed like she was in a nursing home, more like it was her own home. She felt safe and comfortable there. The nurses treated my grandmother with the utmost respect and gave the best care possible and my family is extremely grateful for all their hard work. "

"My mother was admitted to a nursing home when her Alzheimer started to get progressively worse. With only her well being in mind we did research and choose Garvey Manor as a logical choice for her stay. The home is located very close to Altoona, a major shopping center in PA so when we took her out for breaks we did not have to go far. Every time we visited we are constantly told how great the food was over and over and over again. I found the home to be less jail like compared to over assisted living homes. My mother had very much freedom and everyone there was so nice. Her nurse, Nancy, was amazing. Very personable and knew all of us by name after the first week. It was truly a pleasure to be able to deal with such a great group of people who obviously loved helping others. I hope my kids have the decency to find me somewhere like Garvey Manor if I ever need to be put in a home. "

"I visited Garvey Manor. They have nice-sized rooms. The staff was very nice. They were friendly. It's very well decorated. It's very pleasing to the eye when you walk in. I saw their dining room. It was very nice, but I didn't have any food. It was quite expensive. It's a very nice atmosphere. It's very well maintained. It's a beautiful place. They have a Catholic Church right there on the premises so that they could go to mass all the time. "

"I was very pleased with Lutheran Home, and the people working there were very nice. The room that we looked up was upgraded,, but I know they’re upgrading other apartments. The dining facility was clean and very well decorated. They had card games, exercise classes, church services, and birthday parties. There is a call button in every room of the apartment so they are able to get help if they need it. It’s like a hotel, but they have a main meeting room where they have activities. There are places for them to be together. "

"When I first visited Beacon Ridge, I was a little nervous because I thought maybe it was too small and unqualified because of their calm and quiet atmosphere. Although, upon visiting another facility and having to move another relative out of that facility to this one, I realized sometimes a more private, home-like facility is better. One of the unique things about Beacon Ridge is they actually have pets living on site in the facility for the patients and their friends and family to visit with and look at such as dogs, birds, fish, etc. They were very calm animals, but still nice and relaxing to have around. Of course, my parents are more in control of my grandmothers care than I am, so I was not there right off the bat. So when I arrived there a couple weeks after she did to visit her, I noticed that most of the staff that came in at different times knew her name, knew that she liked sports (which sports and which players,) and seemed to know a lot about her. Some of the negatives were things that weren't that big, things such as outdated fixtures, maybe some new flooring would be nice and some new TV's, stuff like that. However, you can't expect a lot when you aren't going to a state facility. One of the nurses seemed to only want to talk about herself, and of course we want to be there for our family member. My grandmother did eventually end up getting a bedsore, but from what I understand happens regularly when a patient is somewhere like this, being basically bedridden. It is a very hard experience seeing someone you love on a daily basis, as my dad does, in a bed because it does change their personality but it helps to have a good facility like Beacon Ridge. "

"My experiences with this facility have been fair at best. When my great grandmother lived here, she was as comfortable as she could have been. She often complained of the food being bland but she had no other issues. The staff was friendly and seemed to be enough of them to handle the large number of residents. This facility also does physical therapy for the county which I had to utilize once. The care I was given was fair at best. They were not able to help much after the first three sessions and I was later moved to another therapy office in the Altoona area. Overall the facility is clean and well staffed with friendly employees, I just would not recommend any type of physical therapy at this facility. "
