"The memory care staff is genuinely concerned with the well-being of the residents living there. The facility is very clean and the rooms are more than adequate for a memory care resident. You can smell the aroma of the food as you come into the unit and the food seems to be enjoyed by everyone in the dining room. I’d like to also mention that it is a very calm, inviting environment and well organized."

"Brookdale Valparaiso has all kinds of various activities to help people with their memory skills, they have singing and baking, and they visit various local sites like stores, churches and local museums. My mom has been there for 5 years, and we're happy with it. The food is fine, and they have a variety like chicken, beef, fish, various vegetables, and dessert. It's not a 5-star restaurant, but it's very good. "

"My dad is going to be moving into the memory care side of Brookdale Valparaiso. There's a foyer living area with a fireplace and a big TV. I've been there probably four or five times to take things to his apartment, and everyone is just calm, they're sitting in their chairs watching a movie, and they're socially distanced. There are 12 apartments on the left side, 12 apartments on the right side, and a kitchen/dining room in the middle. They have a lovely library and several living rooms where there's a TV, a loveseat, and a chair in these different areas. It is just a lovely layout. When a person moves in on the memory care side, next to each apartment they put together a memory box outside, and they have asked me to think about my dad's life and put little memorabilia in there. The activity director then writes a little story, so if one of the residents stops by, they can read and know that my dad was an ironworker, and that he loves racing cars and whatever. I've never seen that before, it's really lovely! They have a huge outdoor courtyard, there are doors to get to that courtyard, and there're half a dozen patio tables with chairs. The staff said that when the weather is nice they have those unlocked, but it triggers a bell that lets all the employees know that one of the residents is in the courtyard. They know where all the residents are, but I think that's nice, too, so that they don't feel like they're held captive if you will. It feels like a real home, and they know that somebody is going to take care and pay attention to them. I'm just really excited there."

"Brentwood at Niles is beautiful, and it was everything that my sister-in-law could have asked for. It is geared more to active people, and she is definitely active. They do bingo and card games, and they have bus trips to Walmart, and the bank, and other places, more so than at other places I'm familiar with. It is a good place for somebody who is still pretty ambulatory or even in a wheelchair, but they do a lot of things as far as activities. They also have a unit there for people with Alzheimer's, but it's on a different level. It's on the second floor, and they're not interactive with the regular. They're totally like two separate places, which in this case makes it more comfortable for the people who live on the lower level. We call it assisted living, and the assistance is available if they need it. They have a nurse on duty 24/7. It would be helpful for her to have someone bring her meds on a timely basis. It was very expensive as far as a seniors' budget might be, but she said she could manage it easily. I would give it a five just because of the things that were available to her, and the cost is not prohibitive. It would be a good choice. I could see what was going on in the activities room, and I liked the people who were there. They were doing a game, and the people were like people on a game show, and they were really pushing for enthusiasm with the residents. When you walk in the front door, it's like walking into a high-end hotel lobby. It was very beautiful. The furniture was beautiful. It was well maintained, but they used a lot of the older things that would make people say, "Oh, I had one of those. This is just like home." It was designed for older people. They had a lovely area for dinner, and it was like walking into a restaurant. They were served. It wasn't a buffet. They have another area there for games and exercise, and a lot of things to keep these people stimulated mentally. There was another small area for family if they wanted to have a family get-together for a birthday or something. I can't think of anything negative."

"My mom has been living at Whitcomb Tower Retirement for 11 years, and right now she's good. It's a very old hotel in the downtown area where you have an individual room. My mother has a nice two-bedroom with a living room and a bathroom. The décor is from the 1800s, and they live right along the shoreline on the bluff of Lake Michigan, so there are places to walk. They have one-bedrooms for the nursing floor and a dining room for that nursing area. My mother can go downstairs to a really nice dining room and have her food there. There's also laundry. They try to have some entertainment come in once a week, plus bingo, exercise, book clubs, and outings."

"I went to Tanglewood Trace. The size of the community was favorable. The different levels of care were impressive, even at the hospice level. The staff during the tour was knowledgeable. She was very forthcoming with information about the facility and additional resources that we could access to help with cost and care. Some repairs were needed, but they seemed to be in progress, so the condition of the building was good. It didn't smell like urine, which is a big plus. There was plenty of room. It's spacious, but for members of the community who have mobility challenges, that spaciousness could also be a challenge for them."

"We have visited Silver Birch of Michigan City. It was very clean, there were a lot of activities for the people there, and it seemed like they had a very good meal plan. The rooms are very spacious. We only spoke with one staff member, we didn't interact with very many. They have bingo, they also have a puzzle room, billiards, and they have some ladies there who put together a weekly fun night for the girls."

"My sister is at Trail Creek Place. It's very good. It's very clean. The staff is caring and conscientious. They know all the residents, take care of them, and they're very communicative. I very much like the place. They have entertainment. They do quizzes and games in a group setting. They do art. They do light calisthenics. There's a wide variety of activities."

"They were super nice at Miller's Health & Rehab, but my father really didn't like it there, and I don't blame him. I thought it was a little depressing because it is part of a hospital. It smelled like a hospital. He was there for a long time, and he was not happy there. He had a private room, and it was very small. When my sister and I would visit, it was crowded. They brought him food to his room like a hospital. He was just very lonely. He had physical rehab there which he did like, but it was in a room that wasn't very cheerful, but bright. His room was dark, clean, and didn't smell like urine. The staff were very nice. "

"I’ve been living in Oak Woods for about a year. It is not far from the drugstore, grocery store, the laundry mat, and the bank. Everybody is very friendly. It’s pretty clean, and we do get really good meals. The staff is quite professional. There are no arguments with the staff, and they help out people when they’re needed. Everybody has been really good. The ones that live next door to me are also satisfied. "
