The GRECC (Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Centers) are palliative care units for veterans in the late stages of Alzheimer's disease or dementia. We moved my father there 3 months ago from a very reputable nursing home, and find that the care is superior, at a fraction of the cost. The staff really cares about each and every resident, from the Medical Director all the way down to the people who empty the trash. There is a bit of a process to apply, and usually a waiting list, but it is well worth it. My understanding is that there are 20 GRECC programs in the country, available at various Veterans Hospitals.
