Questions about Harbor House Memory Care
What ongoing training does the staff receive in dementia care?
Upon hire, our team members complete 8 hours of dementia training before working on the floor with residents. Our team members also receive new-hire training alongside a mentoring C.N.A. We also complete 4 hours of annual training related to Alzheimer's and dementia. In addition to new-hire and annual dementia training, we train our team members on various other memory care topics throughout the year.
How many staffers are on duty in the daytime and overnight?
We staff our community utilizing low staffing ratios. For every 5-8 residents, we have a Caregiver or C.N.A. and is dependent on how many residents reside in our community. In addition, we have full-time nursing too!
What programs or activities does Harbor House Memory Care offer to keep residents engaged? How does the staff engage residents' long-term memories?
Our robust programming offers a variety of activities for our residents with specialized programming related to sensory and a resident's socioemotional health and well being.
Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?
Before an admission, our Executive Director meets with the family to assess their loved one's needs. In addition, upon admission a Nurse will perform a series of assessments to determine the acuity and level of care the resident requires.
What techniques does Harbor House Memory Care use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?
Research shows that a person with Alzheimer's consumes 25% more when eating food off of a red-colored plate. Similarly, drinking out of a red cup increases liquid intake by 84%. Here at Harbor House Memory Care our residents eat and drink off red-colored tableware to ensure proper nutritional intake.
How does Harbor House Memory Care keep residents' families informed about their loved ones' health?
Weekly, Leslee Schafer, Executive Director sends an email to all family members who would like to receive general updates related to the community. All clinical concerns are communicated by our Nursing team. Our Nurses contact the dedicated healthcare POA directly to communicate concerns and updates related to your loved one.

Harbor House Memory Care is located on a quiet dead end street within a residential neighborhood in Wheeling, Illinois. Just minutes away you will find local shopping, boutiques and what is known as Restaurant Row on Milwaukee Avenue. Restaurant Row encompasses a stretch of restaurants along a two mile stretch.
Is Harbor House Memory Care affiliated with a hospital if more care is needed?
Typically, our residents at Harbor House Memory Care age in place. Under our licensure we are not restricted by age and residents as young as thirty years of age live at in our community. In addition, we are able to provide care for higher levels of acuity including maximum assistance and feeding. However, we partner with nearly twenty different skilled nursing facilities should a resident need skilled nursing services.
