What ongoing training does the staff receive in dementia care?
Caledonia Senior Living brings in speakers on the subject of dementia, provides ongoing educational courses through conferences on dementia. We have an inhouse recreational therapist provides formal and informal training and supervision of programming.
Describe the overall population of assisted living residents at Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care. What is their average age? What are their favorite things to do?
Our residents vary in age, but the average is mid to late 80's. Individuals here enjoy an active life with friends and family. Ice cream socials and happy hour with musical entertainment are some of our favorite activities.
What programs or activities does Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care offer to enrich residents' well-being?
We offer music, art and pet therapy, weekly religious services, exercise classes and afternoon teas. On top of our full calendar of activities from our Life Enrichment Department, we have resident run programming such as book clubs and card games. For those needing memory care, we have plenty of mind stimulating activities geared to help prolong cognitive function.

Caledonia Senior Living is surrounded by 5 acres of woods and gardens with walking paths throughout that are wheelchair accessible. We are located down the street from Brookfield Zoo. We recently launched our Cycling Without Age program to take residents into the community on specially designed trishaw bikes for seniors piloted by volunteers. We're proud to be the first chapter in Illinois.

We have a brand new bus to take our residents on excursions around the community and into the city of Chicago. We also accommodate transportation to doctor's appointments.
What makes the chef or dining program at Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care exceptional? What kind of menu can assisted living residents expect?
Our meals are all homemade and served buffet style so residents can see what is prepared. We do have a full waitstaff for our resident's convenience. Our meals are nutritious and delicious! We also have snacks on demand.
What safety features or security measures does Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care offer to assisted living residents?
Caledonia Senior Living has security cameras posted throughout our campus. We have security alarms on every door that ring through to the nurse's station when breached. We also have a receptionist at the front door 10 hours a day. Our apartments are equipped with call buttons for nursing staff and residents with receive a life safety pendant they can press during an emergency which will alert our staff.
How does Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care keep residents' families informed about their loved ones?
Our nursing staff has scheduled care conferences with a resident's family regularly. We send email blasts to family about any changes or urgent news about Caledonia Senior Living. We also host many family and resident gatherings.
What is the care staff-to-resident ratio at Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care during daytime and nighttime hours?
Because we are sheltered care which is an older licensure in Illinois, our staff-to-resident ratio is higher than the industry standard.

We have 5 acres of grounds and gardens surrounding our community as well as many enclosed courtyards for them to enjoy off leash.
What ongoing senior care training does the staff receive?
We host Continuing Education (CE) classes onsite. For our whole staff, we bring in educational speakers who focus on elder care, especially dementia.
How many staffers are on duty in the daytime and overnight?
There are two Care Partners for 10 residents during the day and one Care Partner for 10 residents at night. There is a nurse on staff 24 hours a day.
What safety features or security measures does Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care provide to protect residents who wander?
Our Caledonian House, which focuses on memory care, is state-of-the-art with code locked doors with alarms that sound throughout the building to alert nursing staff of a breach. We also have Wander Guard bands for those living in sheltered care and skilled nursing.
What programs or activities does Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care offer to keep residents engaged? How does the staff engage residents' long-term memories?
We have a daily menu of activities including making storyboards for our residents. A music therapist coordinates programs every Monday. We encourage residents to engage in activities of daily living such as they did at their home before coming to us. We do memory puzzles, art projects and word association to stimulate memory and cognitive function.
Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?
Our Director of Nursing handles all incoming resident assessments. She also reevaluates residents based on reports from Care Partners and family members.
What techniques does Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?
All residents eat together at the same table with the care partners. We have multiple techniques to stimulate the appetite. We also have private dining rooms for those who need more assistance during meal time.

Our Director of Nursing and our administrator hold care conferences regularly with resident family members to keep them up-to-date on their loved one's progress.

Caledonia Senior Living is set in the middle of a forest preserve with residential housing surrounding us in North Riverside. No sounds of traffic.
Is Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care affiliated with a hospital if more care is needed?
No, but we do work closely with Loyola for emergency cases. The Medical Director on staff is affiliated with Hinsdale Hospital.
