Accepted Answer

Activities throughout our communities include Zumba, various exercise classes, arts, and crafts, games, scenic rides around the island, live entertainment, pet therapy, and spiritual gatherings.  Special events include the Chinese New Year dragon dance and the Japanese Obon festival and dancing.

What safety features or security measures does The Plaza at Kaneohe offer to assisted living residents?

Accepted Answer

The Plaza at Kaneohe secures their building at 7 p.m. nightly.  Entrance in/out of the community between 7 pm-7 am must be screened and approved prior to entry.  The nursing staff is available 24/7 and can be summoned to any apartment at any time utilizing the community’s internal call system.  Pending care plans, residents can also be physically checked on overnight either every 2-4 hours.  Additionally, even for independent residents, will have at least three check-ins per day should they not show up for their scheduled meal time. There are nurse call systems in every bedroom and bathroom.

Accepted Answer

All six of our communities offer shuttle service to doctor appointments on select days/times, errand runs, and island scenic rides.  Shuttle service is included in the monthly rent.  Costs for private escorts (Plaza Plus) may apply

Accepted Answer

The average age at ALL six of our communities would be 80-85 years old

Residents at our six communities enjoy BINGO, scenic rides, Kau Kau Club (where they go out once a month to a feature area restaurant)

What places are near The Plaza at Kaneohe or within walking distance for assisted living residents to enjoy?

Accepted Answer

Across the street from Windward Mall, which includes the newly opened Target and near many dining options and Kaneohe Bay.  Also near to Marine Corps Base Hawaii.  Residents can also enjoy the Windward Mall Farmer’s Market every Sunday.

What makes the chef or dining program at The Plaza at Kaneohe exceptional? What kind of menu can assisted living residents expect?

Accepted Answer

Meals are served restaurant-style in our dining rooms for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Alternate menus are also available should the featured items of the day not be to our resident’s liking.  There is no additional cost should a resident request an item from the alternate menu.  The Plaza Assisted Living offers choices that reflect the cultural diversity of Hawaii’s residents.  Japanese, Hawaiian, Korean, Filipino, and American cuisines are commonplace and expected in our communities.  When building menus, it is important that all cuisines are included and that recipes are executed correctly.  This carries over outside of the dining room and includes snacks and food during activities as well.  All menu options are reviewed and approved by a registered dietician.  We can accommodate special diets with a Doctor’s order.

How does The Plaza at Kaneohe keep residents' families informed about their loved ones?

Accepted Answer

Resident’s families receive Constant Contact Emails, personal phone calls from nursing or administration, or posted notifications available throughout the community.  The Plaza Assisted Living will also accept phone or Email inquiries from families 24/7 or as needed.  Lastly, family members are encouraged to attend the resident’s scheduled nursing assessments (done prior to admission, 30 days post-admission, and then every 6 months).

If The Plaza at Kaneohe accepts dogs or cats, what indoor/outdoor areas can they enjoy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we do!  One pet per apartment.  Must be under 30lbs, meet certain criteria, and have paperwork completed by their veterinarian as requested.  Additionally, the resident must be able to care for the pet completely on their own (Plaza staff are unable to assist), or have someone come in to provide that care.

What is the care staff-to-resident ratio at The Plaza at Kaneohe during daytime and nighttime hours?

Accepted Answer

This ratio will depend on the number of residents being cared for throughout the building, so could fluctuate.  Generally speaking, we will have 2-3 registered nurses per shift who are supported by 2-6 resident care aids.  This staffing does not include the administration management, which includes the director of nursing.

Accepted Answer

Residents who are diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s and who may be an elopement risk, reside on a secured floor where they are escorted at all times on/off the floor.

What ongoing senior care training does the staff receive?

Accepted Answer

All team members are required to do 6 hours of annual in-service training related to the industry standards.

In addition, we all train in CPR/First Aid, and Fire Safety emergency training situational training.

What are some recent off-site events that the community activity director at The Plaza at Kaneohe has organized?

Accepted Answer

Off-site events would include a trip to an area restaurant for the monthly Kau Kau Club.  Residents have also been taken to a sunflower farm, a local tea/expresso/boba shop, local bakeries, and local fairs and are currently preparing to participate in the annual Alzheimer’s Walk at Magic Island (Ala Moana Beach Park).  Off-site events will vary and will be dependent on the residents' walking capabilities and available events taking place.

Does The Plaza at Kaneohe work with an agency or registry to provide nursing and medical assistance as needed?

Accepted Answer

No.  All of our nursing team are employees/team members of The Plaza Assisted Living.

What transportation services does The Plaza at Kaneohe offer to independent living residents?

Accepted Answer

Some Independent Living residents have their own car.  There are no additional fees if a resident has a car.  The Plaza Assisted Living will accommodate one car per apartment only.

Years ago when we were looking to elevate our services in memory care, we enlisted the help of David Troxel, an expert in the field of dementia and Alzheimer’s, speaker, and author.  As a result of David’s international research, he introduced the Best Friend’s approach to care.

Our community has adopted the internationally recognized Best Friends™ model of dementia care – which we refer to as Hali’a, meaning “cherished memories, especially of a loved one.”  This comprehensive approach is based on the understanding that personal relationships are key to effective dementia care.  Such relationships require the basic elements of any friendship: respect, empathy, support, trust, and humor.

It is this person-centered approach to dementia care that allows our staff to implement the practice easily and effectively. The Best Friends™ approach is completely centered on the individual and is flexible enough to adapt to each resident’s unique strengths, abilities, and interests.

What common areas are available for independent living residents?

Accepted Answer

Sitting areas are found throughout each community, including in pods available on each floor outside residents’ apartments at most of our communities.  There are also designated living room areas found on care floors and in the main lobby – again available in most communities.  All of our communities have private and secured outdoor seating areas as well that can be utilized by residents and their visitors.  Each community also has a bistro dedicated space where residents and their guests can sit, visit, and enjoy coffee, tea, juices, and/or flavored waters throughout the day and early evening.

Activity programming for our memory care floor is tailored to our resident’s capabilities and will utilize the Best Friend’s approach to care to design activities and entertainment that

This will be most beneficial to our residents in memory care.  Activities will focus on our residents, taste, touch, smell, sound, and sight and are capable of being tailored as needed to said resident’s individual understanding and capabilities.

Who assesses residents' health and cognitive functioning? How often is that assessment repeated?

Accepted Answer

All residents are assessed prior to admission to determine if our community can provide the care needed, and if so, what the care plan looks like.  Once admission is complete,  this assessment will be re-visited 30 days after their admission date, and then every six months thereafter.  If there is a change prior to their six-month assessment, we will do an immediate assessment as required, and the resident's care plan will be revised and communicated to nursing staff and family as warranted.

Accepted Answer

None of The Plaza Assisted Living communities are affiliated with any specific hospital.  If a resident requires hospitalization, EMS will determine which hospital said resident will be taken to.

What techniques does The Plaza at Kaneohe use to support memory care residents during mealtimes?

Accepted Answer

Residents in memory care are escorted to the dining room at meal times.  Assistance is provided to each resident in menu selection in advance.  Residents must be able to walk and feed themselves.  Constant cues are provided for those residents who may need them.  Staff is available to serve meals, beverages, and desserts.
