My friend's husband is at Sun City West. They don't know how to handle the areas that they need to improve on, like how they handle dementia residents, and they don't have much in the way of activities for them. They give them their medicine on time and they keep their rooms clean, but other than that, I don't have any positive things to say about them. The memory care is one floor. It is a hallway off of the main building. There are two elevators, because the assisted living is three floors. I don't think they let them go outside at all in memory care. They have a dining room there, and if you're in memory care, unless someone can come and get you, they bring their meals back to the memory care area. They don't eat with the general population. The staff is trying. Most of them walked out in December and they're totally understaffed, but those that are there work really hard. They just don't have enough people.

Sun City West Assisted Living is not all its cracked up to be. Looks good on the outside, but the care on the inside in not what they say it is going to be. And if we complain, they act like we are just making things up. And, the executive director is never available. She is in one long perpetual meeting all day every day. They charged us and told us my dad needed three people for his care. Dont think they ever used that many people at one time to help him do anything. He just laid in bed or sat in his wheelchair and rang a broken penant they gave him for someone to come take care of his needs. No one came for at least 15 minutes when we were there. A lot can happen in 15 minutes. Several times we came in unexpectedly and found him sitting in his wheel chair facing a wall or a blank screen on the tv. They couldnt be bothered with using the three people to lift him into his nice comfortable recliner. He either was left in bed or wheelchair all the time. He finally had to have hospice out to take care of him for a week before he died. All in all, this assisted living was the worst choice we ever made in our lives. Forgot to say, my dad was owed money from a time when he was in rehab and was charged full price for room and care. Shannon promised around $800 back. I tried to call her and she avoided all 6 calls I made. Just another reason to avoid this place

My dad was at Sun City West. We toured it pretty quickly, and then we just placed my dad because we just had to get him in somewhere. My first impression was that everything was nice. The residents seemed happy. They were moving around all over the place. They were pretty active. It's really hot out there, so not a lot of people were outside, but they have a very nice backyard patio type of area. There were three different floors, and each floor had something a little different. My dad was on the third floor, and they had a little kitchen area. There was a birdcage with one bird, and the residents talked to the bird all the time. There was a table where there was always a puzzle. The second floor had a gym and a theater, which was nice and a pretty good size. The staff members were caring. They could have made some improvements, like using more walkie-talkies to talk to each other. Instead, they had phones that didn't always work. The front door did not always close and lock. We would come and visit my dad around 7:00 because we were busy doing stuff, and we could just walk right in. There was nobody at the front, so the security wasn't that great. There were a couple of times that we weren't sure if the staff was lying to us. We'd be there once on a Saturday, and my dad said he hadn't had a shower since Tuesday. And they said he had a shower the other day, and we're like, "That's not what he said." We never saw anybody cleaning his room with a mop or anything. His room was really small, and we asked for a screen because he doesn't sleep in the bed. He sleeps in his recliner, and the air conditioner was blasting right on him, and he didn't like that. It was going to cost $35 to put up a little plexiglass thing, so we had to put in a work order. We had to set up everything, so I don't know what the maintenance guy did because I rarely saw him. The pillars that were in the dining area always looked like they needed to be repainted or fixed. The people have their wheelchairs or walkers, so the edges of the walls were always being banged up against, and instead of putting a little barrier, it was just left that way. The food wasn't that great. When we first got there, some of the kitchen staff would come out with sweatshirts and not look very professional. Nobody looked happy. But they were making changes as we were getting ready to leave. Everybody was wearing the same uniform, and they were looking a little more professional. They had happy hours, music, games, and baking. They kept the residents busy.

We went to Sun City West Assisted Living, and I didn't care for that. There was one resident that was in her wheelchair in the middle of the room, her sock was falling off, and she was just sitting there reading a book I think. The person that we did the tour with, she couldn't answer all of the questions that we had, and they were pretty simple questions for somebody that had been there that long. It just seemed like she could have answered our questions without talking to somebody else. They were in the middle of redoing the carpets and stuff like that. It looks nice on the outside, the inside seems old, and they have like those, I think they're called p-trap air conditioning units, instead of everybody having regular central air.

We visited Brookdale Sun City West Sandridge and liked it. The rooms that they showed us were clean and spacious. At the time we were there, they didn't have any activities going on. The staff was friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. They had a library, dining room, activities room, and an exercise room. The place itself was well-maintained.
