About Angels For The Elderly - CLOSED in Montgomery, Alabama

Angels has been specializing in Alzheimer’s care since 2001 and continues to set the industry standard in care and excellence. Angels is a combination of four separate Specialty Care Assisted Living facilities, which are located on the same beautiful campus. Each home represents and houses a specific level of Memory Care.

The individual homes allow Residents with similar challenges to live together. Residents in the beginning stages of Memory impairment are not housed with residents in the end stages. This allows each individual to continue having the best quality of life possible.

There are some misconceptions people have about Assisted Living and I would like to touch on just a few of those.

One misconception is that your loved one will have 24-hour, one-on-one care.

We do not provide 24-hour one-on-one care. There is not a caregiver for each resident. It is a home-like environment with 2-3 caregivers per 16 residents. What is important is that you find a facility with on-site nursing and active resident management.

Another common misconception- it is cheaper to bring a sitter into the home.

Sitters are generally not cheaper than a facility. If you have a sitter for only 12 hours a day at $15.00 per hour, you will be spending over $5400.00 per month. If you have around the clock sitters at $15.00 per hour, you will be spending $10800.00 per month. That does not include utilities, food, mortgage/rent etc. Specialty Care Assisted Living at Angels will cost on average between $4600.00 and 5100.00 per month.

And the last misconception is that Assisted Living homes are like nursing homes.

Assisted Living Facilities are not nursing homes. We do not provide skilled care such as feeding tubes and respirators, and our residents are not bed bound. They must be able to transfer with minimal assistance. We strive to keep our residents active as long as possible.

SO, WHEN IS IT TIME TO MAKE THE MOVE TO AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY? THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT SCENARIOS.

The first scenario is when the Alzheimer patient lives alone. In this case, when the family or friends start noticing:

  • A change in personality – the person who was once extremely outgoing might start to become more reclusive
  • Persistently confusing family and friends
  • Forgetting things and not accepting correction
  • Money mismanagement – forgetting to pay bills or giving money away.
  • Failure to remember what everyday items are used for – using items for incorrect purposes.
  • Medication errors – failure to remember to take medications
  • Failure to complete normal daily activities such as dressing and bathing themselves, cooking and nutrition, and household chores.
  • Difficulty in learning and remembering new things – Often times, families tell me, “there is nothing wrong with mom; she can remember things that happened 40 years ago.” This is on par with the disease. They, in all likelihood, will remember things from years ago, but the problem is their short-term memories are almost non-existent.

The second scenario is the Alzheimer patient who lives with the caregiver. In this case, changes need to be made when:

  • There is violent or threatening behavior. Often times, the loved one will stay in dangerous situations to avoid having to place their loved one somewhere. In all honesty, this is the most dangerous choice of all. So many loved ones become abused by the person suffering from Alzheimer’s. The toll this abuse and stress has on a caregiver can be enormous. It usually results in the caretaker themselves becoming sick and losing the quality of life.
  • When the caretaker cannot be at home with the patient all the time. It only takes a moment for a Dementia patient to get lost, hurt themselves, or inadvertently hurt someone else.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I'm very satisfied with Angels For The Elderly. The staff seems to be good and caring to my dad. The food is great. They serve in the dining room, and they serve hot food after everyone gets in there, which is a giant plus for an elderly facility. The activities director was always doing things with the people as a group. My dad wasn't a very social person, but he got to where he talked to a lot of people and was involved in a lot of the activities and enjoyed it. I don't have any negative about the place. The dining area is very nice. If they were in wheelchairs, they would help them to the dining room before the meals, and they were all in place before they serve them their food, which was great. The place is very clean and nice, too. They have a nice outside patio. The tenants can go out there. They have like a Florida room, which is pretty nice. It has plants in it, and there's a like giant puzzle table and people can come work on it for a few minutes and leave or whatever. Anyone there can come in and work on the puzzle. The dining area is large, and part of it is for like lounging or fellowship with a big-screen TV. Overall, everything was pretty nice.

I visited this facility

Angels for the Elderly felt cramped, and it was a lot smaller. On the inside it was smaller, and the hallways were not very wide. There were only one room apartments. Also, if you didn't come out, you were just in this one room all the time. The staff that we talked to, which was not many, were nice, but they didn't really go out of their way to welcome us except for the one head person that we were dealing with. We did not even see the dining area; they didn't take us there. Their rooms were small, it has just one bathroom and a small closet, it just felt really cramped. The atmosphere was just kind of blah. They never showed us activities calendar or anything like that. There were a lot of residents just sitting in the hallway when we went. So, I don't know what kind of activities they had planned.

I visited this facility

I went to the Angels for the Elderly. The rooms seemed fine. The staff seemed fine, although I didn't meet too many people. It didn't seem as warm because I hardly saw anybody in the common areas. I don't know if I came at the wrong time, but I just didn't see that more warm environment. The rooms were a little bit more dated, not too bad, but there were two reasons why I didn't select them. The price was more, they were a thousand more a month, and the location was much farther away from us in Montgomery. Montgomery is not that fantastic of a city, especially in certain parts of it. It's really a crime ridden city these days. So, I guess that would be the distance of the drive, the actual location being in Montgomery, and then the higher price. The building facade was fine.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We love Angels For The Elderly and we think it's a good place for my mother. The care that they provide is good, and she seems to be settling in. They have activities like singing, they just had their Christmas party yesterday, and she said it was really nice. The one time I had it the food seemed really good, they had burgers and fries, baked beans, coleslaw, and she seemed to enjoy that. The food smells good, and she seems to be eating, so that's a good sign. So far, her apartment is clean. She doesn't have much in there, we just put some stuff in not too long ago, outside of the bed or the basics, but it's not dirty or anything. I saw them decorating for Christmas. They had military people come in and it was really nice. They had wreaths on all the windows, doors, and they had the Christmas tree up. They also had a ventriloquist come in to perform for the residents.

This is by far the best facility in Montgomery for your loved one. My father was not an easy resident at times and Angels staff patiently managed his care and moods! My family felt at ease to leave town knowing he would be well taken care of. We all became family in caring for Daddy.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My father in law was at Angels for the Elderly, but he has had health problems, and he is in the hospital now. It’s very nice. It's ideal for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s, very secure. He seems very content there and said he likes the food. The staff was helpful and friendly. They do have activities to keep them moving.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Angels For the Elderly has been so caring and so gracious in meeting my and my dad's needs. He just got out of the hospital this morning, and they had saved his room for him, so he's back there right now. Their rooms are small but adequate. The dining room is homey and evidently he is being fed well. We don't have any complaints. This morning, they had a devotional time with someone coming in from one of the churches, physical therapy and regular group exercises, story-telling time on the porch, and occasionally go outside when the weather permits. It would be nice to have more staff members for one on one care, but they have made up for that by bringing in sitters when he has trouble sleeping at night.
