The Best Senior Living Communities in Helena, AL

"We saw Brookdale Place. It was absolutely gorgeous. That was, by far, my mother’s favorite choice of all the ones in our city. It was extremely clean, and the interior was very immaculate, very nice furnishings. The people were super nice. The dining room was very, very nice. If she went into a senior home, that is where she would love to go. The people that we toured with were caring, and they knew their stuff. It was a really good experience. I would highly recommend it. "

"Cahaba Ridge Retirement Community is lovely and I loved the lady who does their marketing. We had lunch there but I didn't think it was good. The facility is new and beautiful and the people are nice. They have a great ice cream machine. The price is very expensive though."

"We went to Danberry at Inverness. It was like a high-class hotel. It had all the amenities. It had beautiful soft music playing in the background. It had an indoor pool and complete gymnastic facilities for the residents. It was very nice, but we decided it was a little too far for us. The person who assisted us was nice. She picked up on the vibes that my mother was not willingly visiting. The dining area was very, very nice. It was great. I would like to go there. We didn't eat there, but it was a nice big facility. It was immaculate. They had a huge library which interested my mother a little because she's a reader."

"My friend moved into Skyline Village at Red Mountain. I like the staff, very friendly. Everything is covered for a reasonable price. Even cleaning service, all meals, and cable. It fits the need that was there for my friend. She chose the smallest apartment, but it was adequate. She has her bed, a corner, a chair, and a bathroom. She has a bookcase, too. She was able to bring her furniture in. They have a covered porch area that goes out to a patio where they can sit outside. They have a special barbecue for a holiday. Her room includes a refrigerator, microwave, counter space, and sink."

"I toured The Ridge at Grandview. It's beyond my means. But I like that it was clean and the people seemed attentive to their clients. The people were free to walk because they were already in a secure place, as long as they weren't disturbing other patients. So they were really courteous and they didn't hassle me about looking around. And of course, they showed me what my husband's room would look like. The room was clean and nice. It had a bed and a TV. It is like he's at home. It would have his personal stuff. The layout of the building was beautifully done, too."

"It was a three or four year old building. It was actually gorgeous and it was nice inside. The people were nice. I have an electric vehicle, and there's an electric charging station right there on the property. The rooms were nice, too. The one-bedroom had plenty of closet space. It had a washer and dryer in the facility. I met the staff and they were wonderful. It had more upgrades than the other facility I went to, but there's a lot of stuff I wouldn't even use. So, it doesn't matter. They had an outside court, and there was more green space to walk around in there. The only negative was when you leave the facility and make a left hand turn to get on the freeway, I wouldn't advise it. What I did was I turned right and went up to whether it was a light, and I could either make a U-turn or turn into an area and then make a turn and come back, but there was another way out of the place, in the back. So, you go around. It was a more open air kind of place. I had a meal there and the food was excellent. They were having a function event the next night. They have that one every month and the funny thing about it is they were saying that they have a lot of stuff and the lady said, "After dinner, we really get going around here," and I laughed to myself because after dinner, that's when I start slowing down, but there's plenty of activities. I don't know how many I would partake in, but this is a new thing that I'm exploring right now."

"Pleasant Villa is close to my mother's home and her church. The cost was a lot less than most of the places, too. It's been very pleasant. It's not a huge place, but it is nice and always looks clean. My mother stays in a 1-bedroom apartment. They provided 3 meals a day. I've been there several times when they were serving and food it looked fine to me. They don't have a medical staff, but they do handle her medicine. I think they have a mild exercise class in the morning. Most of the residents' average age is 70. "

"My sister and I saw Longleaf Liberty Park's assisted living, although we did not realize at the time that it was assisted living. It was a lovely place in every way, but it just didn't fit our needs because we were not quite at the assisted living stage yet with my sister. The rooms were very nice, and the decor was lovely. You wouldn't feel like you were in a retirement facility. It looked more like a home rather than an institution. It was very colorful and I liked that. The rooms were fine, but then we realized it was assisted living, which kind of upset us a little bit. I didn't think there were as many available activities, and I understand why. If it's assisted living, of course, you might have some of the residents in wheelchairs so they couldn't go on a lot of excursions, perhaps. They had a beauty shop, and I think they even had a little small workout room with maybe some little weights in there if someone wanted to come and do chair aerobics. They certainly had things available for the residents who live there."

"St. Martin's in the Pines was nice, but the only part I didn't like was that we waited about 20 or 25 minutes for somebody to tour. The lady kept calling somebody. She said she didn't know anything about it, and nobody told her anything. When they found someone to tour us, that person showed us the laundry room, the kitchen area, and the apartment. We went all the way around. He also showed the library, the laundry room, the kitchen where you eat, the apartment, and the chapel. They have one bedroom and two bedrooms (I was interested in one bedroom). The outside area has dumpsters out there, though. They had garbage on the ground and stuff. They can keep that area a little bit cleaner."

"The admininstrator of Covenant Place is caring and thoughtful. The place is kept clean and the residents are kept active. It is in a great location and very easy to get to for family and friends visiting a resident. There are also numerous restaurants in this area that I can take my great aunt on outings to. My only concern about this Covenant Place is that some of the staff aren't friendly enough and don't communicate well about the care of my great aunt. "

"The Healthcare Center at Buck Creek was a very institutionalized nursing home. It just had the essentials of caring for somebody. It seemed like a very professional facility, but it didn't feel home-like. The residents were just sitting around and it looked very hospital-like. The staff was very informative, very knowledgeable, and personable. There was a back porch with a few chairs, but I did not see a big outdoor space or a pavilion."

"My parents went to Shelby Ridge Nursing Home for their first rehab. The services were great, and they took really good care of them. It's a great facility. The nurses and the doctor were attentive. They got the treatment they needed. When you call them, they respond within 3 minutes, which was pretty good. They both said the food was good. They had a very good rehab program, and they had plenty of activities for their patients to do. They're very helpful, they kept me informed with everything going on, and they called and asked questions if needed. The staff was great. Everything was always clean. I would recommend it."

"I had previously stated i was not impressed with the cleaning department and want to apologize for that. My concerns were immediately recognized and through no fault of personal at the oaks were resolved. The staff at the oaks are not only kind and patient and engaging with their residents but also to the families of the residents. It is a beautiful and warm environment in which to live. 5 stars for sure. "

"We were going to Morningside of Riverchase, but we knew we would have to move my mother again because it didn't have the skilled living part. It has been redone. The director took us around and showed us all the facilities, and we were treated very well. They had a little beauty shop, a library, TV rooms, and different sized rooms. But they're not overly convenient because of where they're located. "
