"I recently toured Pounder Hall for my mother. From the moment I entered I was impressed. The staff member at the front desk (Mary Jane) was very pleasant and knowledgeable. She spent an hour with us going over what they have to offer and showing us three different sized units. It felt so homey, clean and pleasant. The apartments were not that big but more than sufficient for just my mother. A large bright living room and a good sized bedroom. Also a full bathroom with walk-in shower. The unique thing with this facility was the option for three meals a day. That seems to be rare in independent living. The residents seemed to be enjoying thier meals while we toured the dining room. I'm bringing my mom back for the final decision but I hope that she decides to make Pounder her next step in this phase of her life."

"My husband is in Eastern Star Home and Infirmary. We chose it because my whole family is within five minutes, so we're with him every day. He's been there about four months now. There are not a lot of residents there yet, but the care is so good. They have activities and meals and everyone is so caring. I love the location in the little village of Oriskany. It's an easy access. They have a beautiful patio to sit out in, in the summer when the weather's nice. The food is excellent. My husband seems to be adjusting well. They're very attentive, and if there are any problems, they would call. I love it there. They do a great job. He's in a private room. Value for money is terrible like every memory care unit. There's no coverage for memory care. It's out of pocket."

"Presbyterian Homes & Services was clean and well-kept. It was well organized as far as community rooms and living spaces. They had plenty of activities. Mom liked the room that she is going to have very much. She was happy to know that she could bring her own stuff. She liked the fact that there was going to be more care, so she felt safer. The residents we saw were from all stages of assisted living and we appreciated that. We liked the fact that it was a come and go building. You didn't have to feel locked up. You could go out when you wanted to. Mom liked the freedom of it. The facility looked great. It looked more like an apartment building. We had very few questions because the staff answered everything completely. Kelly was wonderful and super caring. We couldn't have asked for a better tour guide."

"My dad is now at Lutheran Home of Central New York. He went in May 1st. The staff is wonderful. The building itself is 100 years old, but it is very clean and very homey. The residents seem happy. My dad seems to fit right in going to meals. They're going to manage his medication. The staff seems very competent and trusting. My dad isn't much into group activities but they invited him to bingo and other activities. He either accepted or declined, so they respect his choice. He goes to the dining room, which is a good sign. They are very proactive about getting him involved. Food is very good. It is the only place that has continuum of care. They have independent, assisted, skilled or rehab and memory care. That's what I was looking for."

"Masonic Care Community of New York is very good. The facility is nice and the staff is very nice. They seem to be very interested and my wife seems happy down there and I'm satisfied. Her room is nice. She has dementia so most of the time, they're in a common area where they eat and there's TV out there. Most of them go out of the room and spend time with the people. Cleanliness is very good, too. My wife has gained weight there so she's satisfied with the food and it is prepared right there. Each unit has its own kitchen. They bring in some food and put it in the freezer and then warm it up, but they mainly have someone cooking and preparing it right there and there seems to be a good variety. They certainly give them enough and one nice thing about them is if residents don't seem to eat the food, someone comes over and feeds them. They take the fork or spoon and put the food in their mouth. They don't force them, but they just help them eat and they are very good about that. I don't see many activities. I think part of it is the condition of the residents. They can't do it. There are about 15 residents in the unit and my wife is one of the better ones. Some of them can't talk or anything. I think their prices are about the same as the others. They're all too high."
