Zen Hospice Project was founded in 1987 providing hospice care in a residential care facility. The "Zen" in the name reflects their approach of bringing mindfulness and compassion to the care of those dying, their love ones, and bereaved. The agency provides 24-hour care 7 days a week by on-site professional staff including Registered Nurse (RN). Also, there are additional trained staff and volunteers to assist patients, assure a private, comfortable, and restful environment. Each patient is provided a core set of services tailored to their individual needs. The agency has four program areas, each with its own emphasis which include; Guest House - residential home for individuals who are unable to die in their own homes. Volunteer Program - train and support volunteers caring for individuals requiring care. Grief Support - these services assist love ones coping with coping with death and dying. Education - Zen offers an array of trainings and workshops regarding death, dying, and grief. As a former Director of Social Services at a Sub-acute Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) I recommended Zen to patients and love ones who did not want to die in a skilled nursing home. I have received positive feedback from love ones regarding the array of services Zen offer. In addition, family members reported that the staff at Zen is very professional and sensitive to their love ones need especially their volunteers.
