"Harmony on the Peninsula was very nice. The staff was very helpful. The facility was beautiful, and the employees were very friendly. The rooms were very accessible, and they had great amenities. There were plenty of options for entertainment and activities. We didn't dine there, but the dining room was very easily accessible to anyone with mobility issues."

"Harper's Station Yorktown is very nice. They were very new, and they had everything that I would ever want. The staff was very nice. They had all the amenities that I like. I like the pool, and I like the yard. They have the memory section, and I like that. I like that they have an outdoor space there. The rooms were very nice. They were larger than I expected."

"My friend moved into the Regent of Newport News. It has a bedroom, living area, and bathroom. I've seen the dining room where they have barbecues, and the outdoor areas where they brought a bar from Ireland over. They don't serve alcoholic drinks. They use that as a backdrop for their big TV room. My friend told me that the food has been excellent. He's had two meals there. He was in the hospital for four months and couldn't stand the hospital food, so the fact that he finds this food appealing is a lot. It's spotless. I was very impressed with its cleanliness. The staff are all so friendly. They seem to want to make the residents pleased with the service that they're getting. The executive director came to my friend's old apartment, and they physically moved the furniture to relieve me, because I live in Florida and I drove up to Newport News. I just had so much to do in such a short amount of time. The executive director drove the Regent van to the apartment, loaded up all of his friend's furniture, and took it back to the Region of Newport News. I thought that it was really special that he personally did that. And they don't have separate nursing fees."

"My aunt stayed at Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton. She was in memory care. They were accommodating. Her room was comfortable looking. She had a shared room and she had lots of space. She was only there for eight days. We didn't get to use all the amenities, but they had a beauty shop, they had an onsite doctor, and they had meals and snacks available during the day. I thought it was a reasonable value considering its memory care. The staff was always responsive to what I needed. The dining area was spacious. You had rooms for wheelchairs to move around. People were able to eat in groups. They were very nice. Another thing is that they were also segregated by gender, so it was not crowded at all. The facility looked great. In memory care, they were clean and well maintained. I was there almost every day during my aunt's stay, and there was always somebody with a mop cleaning up and they clean up right after the meals. I thought they did an excellent job. From what I looked at, the food was adequate for what people were capable of eating. They made accommodations for people who could not chew. They're very flexible. The only drawback is you got to be firm about what's the base price and what are the add-ons. It's somewhat all-inclusive, but you have to ask about what all the expenses are."

"My mother ( 88 ), has been there for 1 month and likes it. She is in the Assisted Living side. She is lucky enough to be mobile and able to move around without help. She said the food is very good with many choices. The staff is friendly and helpful. The facility appears clean and not crowded. I will post more as her stay progresses. "

"My aunt was at Sinclair Commons. I kind of liked the place. She seemed happy when she was there. The area that it was in was pretty good for her because of her activities. She could get around and do what she needed to do quite easily. Overall, I think it was a really good area. I really didn't have too many dealings with the staff. The very few that I did there, they were quite courteous and helpful. If I looked like I was lost or something, they were willing to help and get me in the right direction. The rooms were fair. I wouldn't say that they were extremely spacious, but I really don't know how much she was paying for her rent to compare. It seemed to be just a little bit on the small side as far as the bedrooms go. The living room was pretty nice, though. They have a full kitchen in their apartment and they are able to cook their own food, but they have a community room where you can have visitors or gathering. They have crafts. Sometimes even the residents themselves put together stuff like a little book club or something. Some of the residents make their own activities in addition to what the place offers."

"The Woodlands at Phoebus Apartments is beautiful. I liked that they have events planned for the residents. Each individual apartment has a little cubby right outside of the door for you to have a place to identify yourself. You can put every season of the year, you can put Christmas stuff or Thanksgiving stuff. It's a playful place for you to put things that can identify your apartment and say hello to people. It's a nice little countertop right outside your door. They got game rooms and puzzle rooms on each floor. They have transportation available. Everything is within one building, including your mail. You don't have to go out to other buildings. Everything is all enclosed in one building, and you have to have a key fob to get in. So, you're safe inside one building. Every apartment has its own full size washer and dryer. They're not stackable. The staff that I dealt with was very interested in my life, and very personable. It's three miles from a Veteran's hospital, and also it's only ten minutes from the beach."

"I had visited my uncle quite often at Regency Health & Rehabilitation Center. For a nursing home, I suppose it was fine. He was a younger person. He was just physically incapable of taking care of himself, but he was mentally fine. It was more designed for people who were mentally unable to make decisions and cannot really think for themselves. He did not like to be there and he had no one to talk to. He was very dissatisfied with it. It always looked clean and it always seemed to be clean, but there was always a smell in the air. As far as nursing homes go, it was probably just as good as any other. The rooms were of good size. There were usually two people in each room and each had their own bed. They can have a television. "My aunt has lived in this facility for years. She is classified as schizophrenic. She is 80 years old. When we go to visit her, the place is always dirty. We have found roaches and other bugs in my aunt's room. It always smells nasty and looks like it has never been cleaned. She didn't even have toilet paper. They aren't fed properly or given enough to drink. There are no doctors or nurses on staff and the staff that is there could care less about the patients. Very poor facility... When we bring her things she needs, she isn't allowed to put her name on them and when we visit her again, the things we brought are gone. They steal clothing, bedding, jewelry, pillows, food and it's the staff that are doing the stealing. I have reported this facility numerous times to no avail. I do wish someone would investigate this place and demand changes or transfer the patients (there were only 7 there at my last visit) and shut the place down. "

"My husband is now in York Convalescent. The staff and the nursing are excellent. They really seem to connect and show that they care, like it is not just a job. We’ve been to sister facilities, and the nursing staff is always great. The administrators at some of the other ones have not been as nice, but York is amazing. It is very clean and very nice. "

"I chose The Hamilton at The York because I liked what I saw. They're taking good care of me. The staff is great and nice, and whatever I need, they take care of it. It's good food. They're not doing a whole lot right now because of COVID, but I probably wouldn't participate in many activities. I'm not interested in that stuff. The place is nice, clean, and new. It's close to where I wanted to be. I want to stay close to Newport News because that's where my friends are."

"Around last April, the family had come to the conclusion that Grandma keeping her house, as need of home repair and full of mounting bills was not worth it. She was aside from me living there (and myself moving out) was isolated from her friends in Hampton (she lived in Newport News). And driving was becoming an issue especially if it rained or grew too dark. Grandma though didn't want to simply be 'tossed in a home'. When you think of a home, you think of cantankerous older persons shuffling along yelling for water. My Ma found this place and it is almost an 'anti-home-. Grandma has her one unit that's fashion like an apartment, her mailbox it right down the hall that passes the great room. But the best was how bright and airy the place looks. You really feel like your in some high end apartment/condo complex. The place is so nice my Ma is serious considering moving there in a few years. I mean your food is planned for you and your right by the city attractions. Funnier still was that within a day of living there, Grandma met a few family and friends from way back in the day. She gets out, plays (or rather is trying to relearn) spades and is just living it up in a place she doesn't have to maintain. You barely feel the staff presence which is a good thing as you really feel like she's just a gray haired bachelorette having a ball. But small things like panic buttons and oversized bathrooms tell you if something were to happen help will be right there. Rather ace living space. "

"Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital was awesome. My wife was there for two weeks and it was a wonderful place. I liked how attentive they were to her needs and everything was geared around getting her out, up, and mobile. The food had great portions and great variety with fresh fruits. All staff from the four areas that we focused on were wonderful, that includes the physical therapists, the occupational therapists, the speech pathologist, and the nursing staff."

"I would give them a 5 because of the amenities, as far as the different recreational programs and the services like housekeeping. The staff was very knowledgeable and very pleasant to speak to. The staff showed me a one-bedroom. My sister has a walker, and she has difficulty standing up on her own. The bedroom was geared towards the handicapped person. It was very accessible. They give classes and exercise in the morning. They have a full recreational calendar. They have a library. They go on bus trips and transportation if you want to go shopping. The area was nice, clean and neat in the morning. It looks like a very new community."
