"Chambrel was very nice. It was quite lovely, but it was in Williamsburg, and our daughter is going to move to Newport News, and that is why we want to move there. They have all the activities that you can think of. They have exercises, movies, trips, concerts, lectures or anything you want practically. "

"My wife will be moving into Edgeworth Park at New Town. This place just blew me away. It was very uptown and the people seemed very, very nice. The place was clean, and they had nice rooms and nice layouts. There was a refrigerator and freezer in the rooms. The staff who assisted me was wonderful and very knowledgeable."

"We chose Colonial Harbor for my friend because the rooms were a lot bigger. They were a lot friendlier, and the food was excellent. "

"We toured Harmony on the Peninsula. We were inquiring about all levels of care. The staff was very friendly. The administrator we met seemed very friendly. The place was very clean. There was no smell. It was a nice place. In the assisted living part, it seemed like it would be like you were kind of living at home. It didn't seem like an institution."

"My wife is in Harper's Station Yorktown. They care about her. The staff is very good. They have a licensed nurse, and she takes care of her and makes sure she gets her medicine. She's an eater. They fed me a good meal. It's a brand new facility, so it's perfect. They have plenty of activities for all the residents. It's just that my wife is too far into her dementia, so she doesn't participate. It's a lot of money for sleeping and eating."

"The overall Commonwealth Senior Living at Kilmarnock facility was great. The lady that showed us around, Christine, was their director of marketing. She did a good job and it sounded like a really good place for my in-laws. It will give them the freedom they want plus it gives us the confidence that there's going to be somebody there if they need help. The staff who gave us the tour was very personable, very knowledgeable, and a good listener and communicator. She made appropriate responses to our comments. One of her greatest assets as she had spent 15 or 16 years of her life caring for her mother, and it taught her a lot. The facility looks good as well. In terms of the food, they sounded flexible, she was saying that it was home-cooked. They have got such a phenomenal kitchen, they could pretty much order anything they want anytime they want. But they could also have a limited kitchen and a small refrigerator in the room. They had a small gym with some equipment on it, they had a pool table, a little garden that people could plant things in. They had a couple of big spaces where they were doing group things, so they have room for that. They mentioned that they had some exercise classes offered."

"My friend moved into the Regent of Newport News. It has a bedroom, living area, and bathroom. I've seen the dining room where they have barbecues, and the outdoor areas where they brought a bar from Ireland over. They don't serve alcoholic drinks. They use that as a backdrop for their big TV room. My friend told me that the food has been excellent. He's had two meals there. He was in the hospital for four months and couldn't stand the hospital food, so the fact that he finds this food appealing is a lot. It's spotless. I was very impressed with its cleanliness. The staff are all so friendly. They seem to want to make the residents pleased with the service that they're getting. The executive director came to my friend's old apartment, and they physically moved the furniture to relieve me, because I live in Florida and I drove up to Newport News. I just had so much to do in such a short amount of time. The executive director drove the Regent van to the apartment, loaded up all of his friend's furniture, and took it back to the Region of Newport News. I thought that it was really special that he personally did that. And they don't have separate nursing fees."

"My aunt stayed at Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton. She was in memory care. They were accommodating. Her room was comfortable looking. She had a shared room and she had lots of space. She was only there for eight days. We didn't get to use all the amenities, but they had a beauty shop, they had an onsite doctor, and they had meals and snacks available during the day. I thought it was a reasonable value considering its memory care. The staff was always responsive to what I needed. The dining area was spacious. You had rooms for wheelchairs to move around. People were able to eat in groups. They were very nice. Another thing is that they were also segregated by gender, so it was not crowded at all. The facility looked great. In memory care, they were clean and well maintained. I was there almost every day during my aunt's stay, and there was always somebody with a mop cleaning up and they clean up right after the meals. I thought they did an excellent job. From what I looked at, the food was adequate for what people were capable of eating. They made accommodations for people who could not chew. They're very flexible. The only drawback is you got to be firm about what's the base price and what are the add-ons. It's somewhat all-inclusive, but you have to ask about what all the expenses are."

"First Choice Assisted Living II was a nice place. It's clean. The staff was friendly. I felt comfortable there. The room was nice. They showed me a studio room. They have everything that we were looking for. We're looking for 24-hour care and meal preparations. The staff was very friendly, very knowledgeable and willing to help."

"Sanders Retirement Village was very nice, clean, bright, and very homey. All rooms were single occupancy, not shared rooms, and very roomy and well lit with nice furniture and private bathrooms. They had a lot of activities, but I think they should include more physical activities because most of them were lectures and movies. My dad was more interested in physical activities like bowling and other games. The facility was in a very nice setting within a beautiful neighborhood a block away from downtown Gloucester, so it's very convenient for the residents. The staff was very nice. I would recommend this facility. "

"I chose Walter Reed Convalescent & Rehab because they have a very good memory care system. We toured the place, everything came out really nice, and they had some very good people there. My mom is happy, healthy, and doing as well as can be expected in this community. There aren't very many amenities and activities since these people are quite far along in their dementia and their mental state doesn't allow for much. But they're kept clean, their rooms are neat, and the food is good. They're good about taking care of people. They feed them, make sure their diapers are changed, and the place doesn't smell. It's just a small unit, but there's quite a few nurses, so everybody kind of has their own person. When you walk around, the main door can't be opened unless it's from the outside, so it's very secure, plus they have ankle bracelets. The place is a nice brick building and it's well-heated and air-conditioned."

"My aunt has lived in this facility for years. She is classified as schizophrenic. She is 80 years old. When we go to visit her, the place is always dirty. We have found roaches and other bugs in my aunt's room. It always smells nasty and looks like it has never been cleaned. She didn't even have toilet paper. They aren't fed properly or given enough to drink. There are no doctors or nurses on staff and the staff that is there could care less about the patients. Very poor facility... When we bring her things she needs, she isn't allowed to put her name on them and when we visit her again, the things we brought are gone. They steal clothing, bedding, jewelry, pillows, food and it's the staff that are doing the stealing. I have reported this facility numerous times to no avail. I do wish someone would investigate this place and demand changes or transfer the patients (there were only 7 there at my last visit) and shut the place down. "

"Wow! Where to start? Despite our son's unfortunate circumstances, he was very fortunate to have been a resident at Anderson's Cozy Home. After being diagnosed with a nasty disease, FTD, our Michael was the first resident there. The Andersons treated him with love and compassion, just like family. They are special people, and are now part of our family as "adopted children and grandson." You will not find better care! They have a spacious home located in a beautiful setting. One of the things we liked the most is the Andersons don't just sit around the house. They offer stimulating, family activities by taking residents to ball games, museums, musical events and parks. We felt like we hit the jackpot, knowing that Michael was in the best hands possible. "

"My sister is a resident of The Arbors at Towne Park Apartments. Her apartment is beautiful. She has her own kitchen, washer and dryer, and two bathrooms because she got a two-bedroom. They're clean and nice. She says they do have nice things in there. They have a kitchen upstairs where you can have your family and you can use the whole room for them."
