My mom moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at Kilmarnock. We chose that place because my brother is only half an hour away, so he can go often. That is what he had been doing. Virginia and that area is my mom's home, and we wanted her to stay there where friends and family are. They have a lot of staff, and this seems to be more of a calling and a passion for them. They have smiles on their faces, are friendly, and caring. They have a bounce to their step. The minute you walk in the door, you feel the positive energy and the joy, which the residents also reflect. They are all happy. The day that we moved in, I saw the food. They do farm-to-table. It's very fresh. They try and they are doing things to engage all five senses, so it looks beautiful. It smells delicious. This is a new facility. It is absolutely beautiful. When you look at the outside it's clean, it's neat, it's bright, and it's welcoming. There are places to park. When you go in, there is a reception area that looks like a five-star hotel. It's very nicely decorated. There are sofas and tables and it's just really, really pleasant. When you go into the area where my mom is it's bright and it's airy. It smells wonderful and it's quiet. The area is wide enough for people with walkers and wheelchairs. It's very comfortable. The staff is everywhere. There are games to play at any time. There are people who invite the residents to go and interact there. All of the furniture is very sturdy. It's clean, neat, and it smells wonderful.

My stepmom is in Commonwealth Senior Living at Kilmarnock. The care is adequate. She's in a large room, so it's nice. I think she's in a two-person room, and they're charging us for a single person price because they don't have a person to fill it. There have been times we've gone there and the floor needed to be cleaned. The staff is very respectful and very nice, but very forgetful. She has hearing aids and the hearing aids have been lost twice now, and this is a memory care unit, so that's been an issue with us. The food is adequate. They have a few activities, but not very many. We've had a few challenges trying to reach people when there's been a problem, but when everything's going smoothly, we can reach them right away. I wouldn't say communication is outstanding or excellent, just good.

The overall Commonwealth Senior Living at Kilmarnock facility was great. The lady that showed us around, Christine, was their director of marketing. She did a good job and it sounded like a really good place for my in-laws. It will give them the freedom they want plus it gives us the confidence that there's going to be somebody there if they need help. The staff who gave us the tour was very personable, very knowledgeable, and a good listener and communicator. She made appropriate responses to our comments. One of her greatest assets as she had spent 15 or 16 years of her life caring for her mother, and it taught her a lot. The facility looks good as well. In terms of the food, they sounded flexible, she was saying that it was home-cooked. They have got such a phenomenal kitchen, they could pretty much order anything they want anytime they want. But they could also have a limited kitchen and a small refrigerator in the room. They had a small gym with some equipment on it, they had a pool table, a little garden that people could plant things in. They had a couple of big spaces where they were doing group things, so they have room for that. They mentioned that they had some exercise classes offered.

Commonwealth has a wonderful environment, and friendly and professional staff. They were accommodating. The units were spacious and clean. However, you have to ride elevators, and my mother is very nervous about being on them by herself.

Before I retired seven years ago, I was in healthcare administration in the Kilmarnock community, and Commonwealth has always had a good reputation. I did look into several agencies, and came in to take the tour at Commonwealth and liked what I saw. It was very clean, and there was a home atmosphere about it that I liked very much. Everybody was very friendly. It just looked like a place where my mother could feel comfortable. My mom is a bit of a loner, but she has made friends here. Some of the staff here have really taken her under their wing. I think the interpersonal relationships she’s been able to foster has helped her tremendously. From administration right on down to the aids, everybody seems to try their best. Things aren’t always perfect and they won’t be anywhere, but they do the very best they can to meet her needs. They really try to make her feel like she is the most important. It happens consistently when I see people stop what they’re doing to either take her back to her room or to get her something she is asking for.
