My sister-in-law was in Bluebonnet Nursing and Rehabilitation for rehab. She moved in there from the hospital, and I was not pleased with it at all. She has some dementia, and we told her that we had chosen a different place for her. We took her to that place to see it and everything, and they tried to convince her to stay. They actually called a meeting and asked us to be in there with her, and they were telling us that my sister-in-law was telling their staff that she didn't want to leave. I complained because she is on private pay, and I think the staff was trying to get her to stay there. They gave us a lot of hassle. They tried to tell my husband that he had to have guardianship before he could take my sister-in-law out. It was very upsetting. The administrator told me that we had no proof that my sister-in-law had dementia. I told her my husband has the power of attorney for her, and I contacted the other doctors that she was seeing while she lived in San Antonio, where there were PAs who came by to see her every week. They told me that she had dementia, and they're the ones who told me they didn't think she could live by herself anymore. I even received a letter from that PA telling us her opinion about her dementia and about the cognitive test that she gave her, and how low she scored. However, the director of nursing at Bluebonnet told me that it had to be signed by a physician, not a PA. The administrator also said that it has to be signed by a lawyer. I've looked it up, and in the state of Texas, a PA is all that is required to diagnose that. After that, they got very different. They treated us not very nicely, so we took her out. Every day that we went there, that place smelled like urine. I see them cleaning, so I don't know why it was. She was there for a month, and we took her to a doctor to get her evaluated. He sent the therapy to them, but they told us in the meeting that the doctor wasn't the therapist. They had my sister-in-law in a wheelchair the entire time, when the doctor said she needed to be back in her walker. He did X-rays and MRIs of her knee and said she really needs to get up and get back into her walker, but I could not convince them of that. She suffered a fall here in her wheelchair. They left her in the room with the wheelchair, and she tried to get out of bed, and she fell. When she first got there, they put her down in the last room in the hallway because they said she could have her private shower. However, she had nobody come by or anything, and she kept hearing all kinds of construction noises outside. I asked them if they could put her in a different room where there was more activity for her. They did move her, but all she had was a room with a chest of drawers, a bathroom, and a bed. They didn't have many activities. They would play bingo occasionally, but mostly you see the residents sitting out in the living room, watching television. I checked the calendar to see, and all I ever saw in there was bingo. The food didn't look too good, either, and my sister-in-law would complain about it because she didn't know what she was eating.

Bluebonnet Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is a descent place to have loved ones. The ameneties are not that great, for example, the patients are usually kept two to a room. This does not offer very much privacy. The staff is caring and helpful. They show compasion for the patients. The staff is commited to providing excellent care to patients, and offer kind words to anyone visiting. They encouraged me to spend as much time with my grandmother, who was a patient there, as possible. This was a way of not making her feel home sick. The staff is well educated and knows what is best for the patients. The only negative aspect of the facility is that they make all patients eat in the cafeteria. I would like to see them cater to the needs of the patients a little better by allowing them to eat in their rooms. All in all, I would recommend this facility for anyone looking for assisted living for a loved one.
