"My husband suffered a stroke and was a resident of St. Johns for 3 months while learning how to care for himself. He had daily therapy in order to learn how to walk and how to live with the use of only one hand. The nursing assistants were kind, patient and helped my husband laugh while helping him. The occupational therapist was helpful in providing aids for my husband to use in order to dress himself and manage with daily tasks. She did however have one shortcoming- she told him what he could not do again. You do not ever tell anyone that they can no longer do anything. A good therapist helps the patient discover their own limitations and helps expand what they can do. The physical therapist was great in helping my husband learn to walk and to gain his sense of balance. This facility is well kept with caring personnal. The food served was well balanced and nutritious. The lack of air conditioning meant for some uncomfortable days but a fan in his room helped. They were kind enough to provide a cot for me so that I could stay with my husband when it was possible. We chose this nursing home over other ones in the area due to their positive reputation in the area and we weren't disappointed. My husband is now home and is doing well, a good example of what good therapy and a loving helpful atmosphere can do. "

"Harrison Bay Senior Living has senior living, assisted living, and memory care. It's brand new, and they had a lot of facilities and activities. The administrator was excellent. The rooms and the dining area were excellent. They had transportation services."

"My dad is in the nursing home at Good Samaritan Society - Albert Lea, and so we moved my mom into the assisted living at the same location. Her apartment is very nice. They're friendly and helpful. They are a great group of people. The place is very well-kept, well-maintained, and clean. It's a nice environment. I have also been told that the food is excellent."

"When my grandmother began to develop Alzheimer's, our entire family was at a loss about what our next step would. Grandma had been independent and living alone in her own home for since my grandfather had passed 40 years ago. Moving her into a nursing home was such a sad occasion for all of us. When we met the staff at Saint Marks, all of our anxieties were relieved. The staff got to know all of us and were wonderful about keeping us updated on the intricacies of grandma's life. If I called to say hi and spoke to a nurse, she could tell me what Grandma had for dinner, what Grandma was watching on television, who Grandma's pals were, what she had talked to Grandma about over coffee that morning. It was very reassuring to know that the staff was actually getting to know my grandma and spend time with her, in a way that I was unable to because of my young family. Grandma's room was lovely, if a bit on the small side. She had a window that looked out onto a pretty landscaped garden. There was plenty of space for her to bring in her antique dresser and rocking chair so that she was able to feel more at home. There was even a cat living in the home that wandered from room to room visiting all of the residents, which was very helpful when grandma started to regress into her childhood memories toward the end. My grandmother passed away this Fall and again Saint Marks went above and beyond to assist my family. They made a very difficult situation a tiny bit more tolerable. The staff was kind and thoughtful, and even sent a basket of flowers to the visitation. "

"Cedars of Austin is a caring and well-staffed community. They have senior living, assisted living, and memory facilities as well. It's a very nice place. The personnel and staff are very excellent and caring and when anything happens, they contact me immediately and let me know what transpired. It's well-run, and it's like a small city within a city. They have their own 24/7 nursing staff, facilities, and features a salon, and a multitude of things that the residents can do. They own their own shuttle bus so residents can travel and go places for a meal or see an event, or to go shopping. It's great as far as keeping people active and involved. My mother is happy there. The check-in process went very well and it was easy to do. The staff was there to help us move stuff into her apartment when we got there. Everything was taken care of. Their dining room is like a very posh restaurant and the cook is a master chef and very personable. He knows all the residents by name and what they like or don't like, it's just amazing. The building is comfortable and feels like home to anybody from the moment you walk in. Price-wise, they're comparable to the other places we've looked at, which were nothing but glorified nursing homes."

"Everything is really good with Birchwood Cottages Owatonna; there were no issues whatsoever. They've got nurses on staff, and enough staff to take care of everybody. When we went there, it seemed like everything seemed clean. We can't go in there because of the COVID lockdown. You can go over outside the fence, and view from a distance if you want to see them. So they've been really good on that. The nurses all have masks on, they all take temperature checks when they come in, gloves and everything. It's an apartment that she's in, it's just a studio or 1-bedroom that just has her dresser, cupboard, and bathroom. She doesn't do activities at all, she's not functional but as far as arts and crafts, they try and she just does what she can. It seems that the staff was friendly. When we were there, they were doing things with her, and taking her to her room. And she's always dressed nice and clean. We were there and she's got plenty to eat, then when she can't take down the solid food because they're watching her diet, they bring her jellos and soft food. There are times she can't swallow so they let us know. I really feel that she's in very good care. They've got an outdoor fence in space with a garden, they have a music room, it was very pleasant, and there are birds. Pricing-wise they were fair, we got a lot better care than where she was. We got what we're paying for."
