The Best Assisted Living Communities in La Salle County, IL

"Heritage Woods of Ottawa was a nice place. They had three meals a day and they had nursing, cleaning, and everything else, but it's $5000 a month and I only make $2060 a month. They say they'd have to get Medicare involved, but that would mean that I'd have to give up my car because that's considered an asset and then they give me $90 a month. Cable or Internet would come out of that. Also, they had buses there that would take you to a doctor's appointment. The room I saw was alright. They showed me an efficiency apartment that they had offered. There was one pair of residents there that were playing a card game. They have some exercise equipment in some of the areas, but not a lot. Just some stationary bikes. I didn't see any treadmills or stuff like that. Most of the residents were older ladies. Then there's a few guys there. It was clean and everything."

"When my parents got older we all decided to move them into liberty village in Peru. When we first went to look at the units we were very surprised to see how spacious they were. The second thing we noticed was how nice the main floor and activity areas were. I feel like mom and dad are at home here. When we come to visit there is always something to do. The level of care they provide is second to none and we really feel like they are doing the best job of taking care of our parents. The house keeping staff is professional and friendly and my parents unit is always clean and fresh when we come to visit. Since mom stopped driving the group outings and scheduled transportation still allows her to be active. The food is not as good as mom's home cooking, but is exceptional none the less. Every staff member we have met there has been cautious and professional and is always smiling. I would recommend liberty village to anyone who asked. "

"My aunt stayed at Evergreen Place Supportive Living - Streator. It's like an independent living facility because some of the residents had cars and they could come and go. She got to go outside and walk around. She just had to sign out and sign back in what time she left and had to be home at night. It was very nice, but she needed more caring at night. They distributed her medication there. The staff was wonderful. When she had a bad day, one of the girls will be sitting with her. They really liked her and helped her. Her room was very good, but you had to supply your own furniture. The dining area was very good, and it's almost like they were in a restaurant. We really liked it there. She seemed to like the food, and they had a lot of options. It's very nice and open. She had more of an apartment than just a room. She had a living room, a bedroom, big closets, a little kitchen area, and a nice-sized bathroom. People don't think of it as a nursing home when they walk in, they think it's a hotel. They had a lot going on. They had kids coming in to sing and musicians coming in."

"Villas of Holly Brook was brand spanking new. It's got indoor and outdoor carpeting down the hallways. It's got wide hallways and much bigger rooms. It's almost twice the size of the other facility I looked at and it's homey with lots of flowers. They got a lot more activities going on there. They got church services (they bring in a pastor once a month) and weekly Bible studies, which was a thing for my friend. It was well-designed as far as spaciousness. They've got a large theater where they've got a really big screen TV. It's set up like you're going to a movie house where the lounge chairs are all specially built for that. It seems like there's a lot more light that would come in there, the way it's designed. My friend was looking to have a private room and there was a shower in each room. We also toured the cafeteria area and it's quite a bit large."

"The Mendota Lutheran Home is one of three nursing homes in the town of Mendota, Illinois. My great aunt lived at this nursing home for just under six years. She passed away early in 2011. My experience with the nursing home was pretty good, I really appreciated how they treated my great aunt. I usually visited on weekends through much of the year, except during the Winter months. The staff was always great, whether it was helping to take my great aunt for a ride or if we needed assistance getting around the facility, or just about anything. I was not too happy with the facility itself though, specifically the building. That is not to say that it is dirty, but the building is very old and it just needs some basic improvements like newer bathrooms. I also do not care for the air quality, it seems to me that the air is rarely, if ever, getting refreshed. It is very rare (or maybe never) that a window will be opened, I think that contributes to the sense of mild displeasure I sense when I enter the facility. But those are my only complaints about this nursing facility. Overall it is a great place, the staff is very dedicated, caring, and helpful to the residents. I have been there dozens of times and I can tell by watching over the years that the staff really does care. One reason I think this nursing home may be so excellent is that Mendota is a relatively small town (roughly 10,000 people) and that worked well because many of the residents knew the staff, or at least knew of them, before they entered the nursing home. The size of the nursing home was beneficial as well, I do not believe there were ever more than 100 residents at any given time. That sense of space made the home nice. My great aunt and many of the residents had (have)their own room. I had the food served by the nursing home a few times and it was pretty good, at least better than I expected. My great aunt often would be involved in activities at the home, such as trivia, movies, and various games. The staff tried their best to not let the residents get bored or unhappy, and I appreciate how involved they were with my great aunt. With the exception of the building, the fixtures, and the air quality, I would give the Mendota Lutheran Home a top rating. The staff and management definitely get the best remarks I can give. "

"Stonecroft Village is a beautiful facility. The staff were very attentive and caring. I feel that the residents get very good care there. They are very attentive and very helpful. They do have a really safe environment and I can see that the residents enjoy living there. The food is very good and they do have a restaurant-type of style room. I was not really familiar with regard to their activities, but I did see some things going on there. "

"The facilities themself were wonderful. A newer facility, it was kept very clean, there was no "nursing home smell" as many of the facilitie I have been in previously had. They had nice indoor and outdoor areas where family members could visit with residents, and even small rooms that could be reserved if someone wished to have a larger gathering at the facility with a resident. Lots of planned activities for the residents as well as outings and special meals to give the residents things to look forward to. The placement of residents was sometimes not as accurate as it should have been for mental capacity. My grandmother was very "with it" and she was often placed in a room with someone who had no memory left and was just there physically, giving her very limited interaction with others. She was also placed with these people to eat her meals with and watching them often made it hard for her to eat, although physically she was 100% capable. Their financial department often made errors as well and you had to watch them. Overall a nice facility, although I do think my granmother got better care since they knew that children and grandchildren were apt to "pop in" at random times during the day. Overall I think average care with above average facilities for the rural area that we live in. "
