My mother-in-law is in Westside Terrace Health & Rehabilitation Center. She hasn't been there long enough for us to get a good idea, but it seems nice so far. It's clean. The staff seems to be fairly up to everything. At first, we had a lot of problems there because she wants to walk and she's a fall risk, so they don't want her walking. She's been giving them a little trouble about that, but they've been really good about it. The place is very clean. It's a nice, friendly spot. So far, we haven't had any problems with it. She's in the nursing home. She has quite a bit of dementia.
My husband has been there during her mealtime. We try to go not during meals, so we can visit and sit with her. They say she eats well, but I don't know if they have a wide variety for breakfast and she's not an eggs and meat person. He had lunch with her one day and he said it was pretty good, kind of like hospital food. The dining area is clean and very neat. They have one little dining area for every little wing, so it's not overcrowded, and it's a very clean area. They have their area with a nice couch and all with a TV if they want to go in there and sit and watch TV. It's a fairly nice facility.
They have church every Sunday, bingo and other games. They have a birthday party once a month for the residents. She hadn't been there long enough to go to one of those, but I've seen it on their calendar. They put a calendar every month in the room up on the wall. They had some other activity the other day. So far, he said she only went to one party they had and that was for the CNAs there and they let all the residents come. They seem to have at least one or two things a week that they do. I haven't seen anything like exercise classes or anything, but I guess they have rehab there, so they would need exercise classes. The nurses are always very helpful when you go up and ask them questions.

The facility is ultra clean and there is never a bad scent -- a great accomplishment I must say. The management and business staff and the receptionists are the nicest people you will ever meet. The rehab staff is super. The nursing staff, is, for the main part, very good, although there are a few nurses aides who seem to hate their jobs and are a bit grumpy, but there are not many of those. Whomever is in charge of activities does a commendable job as there are always special events for the residents. There are not that many amenities, but really most residents seem happy with what there is. I consider Westside Terrace the best in Dothan, and, probably in the entire area. There is ONLY one very valid
complaint but it is so important. THE FOOD! I cannot believe that the food is so horrible that one would not believe it unless they saw it and tasted it. I would think that whomever is in charge of this facility would realize that food is one of the few things residents have to really enjoy. It is a scandal how truly awful the food is. Until they improve the food, I cannot imagine anyone giving this facility 5 stars and it is a pity, as the people working there are so very nice. IMPROVE THE FOOD! NO ONE CAN EAT WHAT IS PREPARED. IT IS COLD WHEN SERVED. IT IS USUALLY TASTELESS OR IF IT HAS ANY TASTE IT IS SO BAD THE PERSON EATING REALLY WANTS TO SPIT IT OUT. I believe that the only reason anyone eats the food in this facility is simply to keep from starving. Please, someone take note of this and do something to improve the food for these poor residents.

My mother was in Westside Terrace for rehab. It was fine. The room was adequate but small. It would not be suitable for living, but for rehab it was OK. It was very clean. The staff was good, and kept her busy. The food was hospital food but OK.

My father chose Westside Terrace for rehab. He was happy with the location. He is on a waiting list for a private room and I am not satisfied with the accommodations. They have a full scheduled activities, however they don’t have enough levels for the people with dementia. They don’t meet the requirements for the level my father is at this time. They should keep like conditions together and not mixed with the other levels. The staff is really good.
