"We started working together to plan the care for our Mother's return from SNC fourteen months ago. The staff and personnel have, without exception, been courteous and responsive. I will not say it has been perfect, but it has gone well. There are four of us, but no one lives close enough to oversee Mother's care without help. There has been a lot of turnover with caregivers and some less than stellar matches, but we focus on what works, not what didn't work, and have allowed time for Mother to adjust to needing 24/7 care. I am grateful for Home Instead Senior Care, their management, staff, and caregivers. "

"We've had St. Matthew's Direct Care Services for 3 weeks now. The caregiver helps my mom with bathing, dressing, and grooming. She also does cooking, house cleaning, and reminds her of her health and safety. She comes 5 days a week, and she has been very good."

"Deborah and her CareTenders provided care for my Mother for several years until she passed away. Since we did not live in the same city it was comforting that we had a family advocate and liaison to communicate information from her physicians as well as someone to coordinate every aspect of her daily living. I would highly recommend this company. They all became like family with us during the last years of my Mothers life and I know she loved them! I would highly recommend them! "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Shreveport:
Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
---|---|---|---|
Meals on Wheels | (318) 676-7900 | 1700 Buckner Street, Suite 240, Shreveport, LA 71101 | To help seniors maintain their independence, the Caddo Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program supports their nutritional needs by providing healthy, home-delivered meals. A hot meal is delivered each day by volunteers around lunchtime. Meals are low in fat, have no added salt and are designed to provide seniors with a third of their daily nutritional requirements. This program is available to local residents age 60 and older who are homebound, living alone and unable to prepare their own meals or shop for themselves. |

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
