The Cost of Home Care vs. Other Senior Care Options in New Canaan, CT

Some seniors may find they want or need round-the-clock medical supervision as they age. For people in this situation, a nursing home may be the best option. In New Canaan, a semiprivate room in such a facility is over $10,000 more per month than home care. Assisted living provides a lower level of medical support, but is far less expensive. Financial Assistance for Home Care in New Canaan, CT

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

  • Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
  • Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
  • Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
  • Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

New Canaan Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in New Canaan:

Meals on Wheels of New Canaan(203) 594-53183 Farm Rd, New Canaan, Connecticut 06840The mission of this program is to help seniors in New Canaan maintain their independence even when they have trouble preparing or obtaining their own nutritious meals. Deliveries are made Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. by volunteers from the community. Approved applicants will receive their meals free of charge.

While the all-inclusive rate is $92 per day, ElderHouse helps everyone in need regardless of their ability to pay. ElderHouse also offers counseling at no charge for caregivers who need help with day to day issues or information about local resources.
Circuit Breaker Tax Relief Program860-418-6290450 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106The state of Connecticut has a real estate tax relief program for seniors that provides a tax credit up to $1,250 for married couples and $1,000 for single persons based on a graduated income scale. The value of the credit is calculated by the local tax assessor in New Canaan. In addition to Circuit Breaker, residents of New Canaan can take advantage of a tax abatement, which is provided by the city, between $1,000 and $1,700 depending on their income.
CT Energy Assistance Program(203) 333-92881000 Lafayette Blvd, 9th Fl, Bridgeport, CT 06604This statewide program, which covers residents in New Canaan, provides financial assistance for certain low-income seniors who are responsible for heating their homes. Those who are accepted into this program will have a portion of their heating bills covered by the state. Payments are made directly to the utility provider, not the resident. An agent in New Canaan may be able to help seniors in the city apply for this program.
